Arson suspected in Sunday fire
The Caldwell County fire marshal's office is investigating a fire believed to have been intentionally set at a former Shuford Mills building in Granite Falls Sunday morning.
The Granite Falls Fire Department received a call just after 10 a.m. of smoke coming from the vacant building at 121 Falls Ave., which belongs to Hickory-based Grace Tabernacle Church and was not in use at the time of the fire, Granite Falls Police Lt. Chris Jenkins said. The fire was isolated to the floor of the building and caused an estimated $3,000 damage, according to an incident report.
"We believe the fire was probably set by kids, and it is still being investigated," Jenkins said.
Sunday's fire was not the first there. On May 25, 2013, police investigated a fire that was reported around 9:30 p.m. and burned the floor of the building, causing an estimated $2,500 damage. No arrests were made.
