Christmas can't be contained

Escaped pet donkey now needs new home

Christmas kept busting out.

It happened again Wednesday, and led a Caldwell County Animal Control officer on a chase.

The pet donkey named Christmas was purchased just before Christmas for 15-year-old Zachary Moody but apparently prefers eating the grass about a 100 yards away from the fenced-in field off Summerlin Road in Patterson in front of where Zachary's aunt, Haley Greer, lives. It was about 3 p.m. Wednesday when Greer learned that Christmas was at it again.

"I got a call saying, 'Your mama's chasing the donkey down the road,'" Greer said.

Greer's mother, Patricia McGee, couldn't keep up.

Animal control Officer Patrick Whittington took over, following Christmas up and down Summerlin Place.

A neighbor was about 15 feet up a tree when he saw the donkey cut through his yard.

"There he goes," he said nonchalantly.

Greer eventually caught up with Christmas and led it back by its harness.

Whittington waited on a trailer to take the donkey back to animal control, where he said it will be available for adoption by someone who might be able to keep Christmas closer.
