Committee planning special activities
Granite Falls’ Veterans Memorial Monument is well underway and on schedule for the 11:11 a.m. Nov. 11 dedication, officials say.
Councilman Jim Mackie, vice chairman of the Granite Falls Veterans Memorial Committee, said the committee has planned some special activities for the dedication ceremony, but he was tight-lipped about what they are as to not spoil the surprise.
“You gotta be there, because it’s going to be once in a lifetime,” Mackie said. “It has been a real journey, and we are almost there.”
Construction for the $145,723 project officially began on Aug. 5 by Wilkie Construction Co. Inc. According to Town Manager Jerry Church, construction is expected to be completed by Oct. 16. As of last week, the committee had raised $123,414 for the project and is continuing fundraising. The memorial will be between the Granite Falls Recreation Center and Philadelphia Lutheran Church.
The project for the memorial began on Aug. 29, 2011, when the committee met for the first time. Barely a month later, the first donations were accepted. Citizens were also encouraged to submit names to be inscribed on the monument. Church said the town has received 404 names.
“The response for this has far exceeded our expectations,” Church said. “We initially thought that the building of the monument would be a success if we had 250 inscriptions in the first year, and we ended up with 404.”
