12 throw hats in the ring on second day of filing

Twelve people filed for local office on Monday, the second day of filing for mayor and city/town council in Caldwell County.

Below are the candidates who filed for a first-time seat:

  • Janet Winkler for mayor of Hudson. Winkler is retired and currently serves as a Town of Hudson commissioner.
  • Edward Lineback for Sawmills Town Council. Lineback is a truck driver and has not previously been elected to a local office.
  • Norman Clontz for Gamewell Town Council. Clontz is retired and has not previously been elected to a local office.
  • Gary Whisnant for Lenoir City Council. Whisnant is a shipping coordinator and has not previously been elected to a local office.
  • Joseph Norman for Sawmills Town Council. Norman works in sales and previously served on the Sawmills Town Council.

Below are the incumbents who filed for re-election:

  • Gary Isenhour for Rhodhiss Town Council. Isenhour was first elected in 2009.
  • Rick Justice for Rhodhiss mayor. Justice was first elected in 2005.
  • Wilford Beane for Gamewell Town Council. Beane was first elected in 2009.
  • Carl Wagner for Hudson Board of Commissioners. Wagner is currently Hudson’s mayor pro-tem and was first elected in 1989.
  • Barry Hayes for Granite Falls mayor. Hayes was first elected in 1983.
  • Hunter “Pedro” Crump for Gamewell Mayor. Crump was first elected in 2009.
  • Bob Gibbs for Sawmills Mayor. Gibbs was first elected in 2009.

The filing period ends at noon July 19. Candidates can file at the Caldwell County Board of Elections office in the Alden E. Starnes Administration Building in downtown Lenoir. The filing fee is $5 and should be paid in cash. Candidates for mayor or council must be residents of the municipality in which they are running.
