Monday, June 16 begins the Caldwell County Summer Food Service Program, which offers free lunches to Caldwell County residents 18 and younger.

Guy Garner, director of the child nutrition program for Caldwell County Schools, said he hopes to serve 300 to 400 kids a day.

“We have an area that . . . parents just need help with food,” Garner said. “And during the summer, because they’re so used to them in the school year getting it (food), they don’t have access to any. So, a lot of these kids really like participating. You can tell. They all have a smile on their face, and they’re hungry when they get there.”

Funds for the program come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which reimburses Caldwell County Schools for the money spent on food.

“We have so many kids that are needing meals during the summer, who don’t have access to food that it helps them survive during the summer,” Garner said.

The Summer Food Service Program runs from June 16 to Aug. 22. There will be no lunches the week of July 4 for the holiday. Free lunches are offered at the following sites: Caldwell Gardens at 1302 Piedmont St. in Lenoir from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Caldwell Gardens at 1520 Berkley St. in Lenoir from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Harrington Apartments at 327 Harrington St. in Lenoir from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Poplar Street Apartments at 1211 Poplar St. in Lenoir from 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m., Redwood Park at 450 Redwood St. in Hudson from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Caldwell Gardens Wood Crest Apartments at 226 Wilson St. in Lenoir from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m., and Granite Falls Recreation Center at 51 Pinewood Road in Granite Falls from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
