Man in Globe dies when mower overturns
A man cutting the grass died Wednesday afternoon after his mower overturned on an embankment, according to Capt. Larry Price from the Collettsville Fire and Rescue Squad.
The man, whose name was not released, was riding a commercial lawnmower along the bank of the Johns River near the Starlite Trailer Lodge on Globe Rode shortly after 4 p.m. when the mower tipped over, Price said. The man suffered from head trauma, but Price said he was unable to determine whether the lawnmower ran the man over or he hit his head on rocks on the 40-foot slope.
“He was from the campground, but he was not an employee there. As I understand it, he was kind of a handyman that had done some odd jobs to help pay his rent,” Price said.
Price estimated the man’s age to be 65 to 70.
Once the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office completed its investigation, Price said, he and his crew removed the lawnmower from the knee-deep river and placed an oil boom to catch any leaking gas or oil.
