For the past two months, folks have been wondering what happened to the discount bread store on Pennton Avenue behind Shields. It has been closed for good as a cost-saving measure.

“In order to focus more sharply on our core competencies, the decision was made to close some of our thrift stores,” said David Margulies, spokesman for Bimbo Bakeries USA, is a manufacturer, marketer and distributor of fresh baked breads, buns, rolls and cake products.

The Arnold Bakery Thrift Store sold overstocked bread items at discount prices.

Patti Baker, who works in Sun Rayz tanning salon near the storefront that Arnold Bakery occupied, said people keep hoping the bread store's closing is temporary. Inside the darkened store are empty shelves. On the door hangs a sign that simply reads, “Closed.”

“People still come down here to see if it was open again,” Baker said. “Everybody misses that place. It did a big business.”
