Lenoir man indicted on multiple sex charges
A Lenoir man who was arrested in March and accused of raping a teenage girl in Lincoln County was indicted by a grand jury April 7 on two counts of felony statutory rape of a 13-, 14- or 15-year-old by a defendant six years older, and two felony counts of statutory sex offense of a 13-, 14- or 15-year-old by a defendant six years older.
Matthew Chad Beaver, 35, of Perry Lane was arrested March 14 after the incident was reported by the Lincoln County Department of Social Services on Feb. 10. Investigators with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said Beaver knew the girl, who was 14, and that the incidents occurred at the girl’s home. Beaver was jailed and given a $160,000 secured bond.
The charges were dismissed on April 2 to avoid requiring the girl to testify in a probable cause hearing because prosecutors believed they could get grand jury indictments, which would automatically move the case to Superior Court for trial, said Jim Miller of the district attorney’s office.
