Connie South resigned as town manager of Cajah’s Mountain on Thursday. Mayor Ronnie Setzer said that while he could not comment on the reasons because it is a personnel matter, the resignation was South’s choice.

“I wish Connie the best,” Setzer said. “This is the path she chose. It was her decision to resign. I think that’s the best way to put it. We had a meeting this morning. At the end of the meeting, she resigned.”

South worked as town manager for 26 years.

With the position now open, Setzer immediately reached out to the Town of Hudson and the Town of Sawmills, and he thanked them for their assistance. Setzer also contacted the Range Riders program, part of the NC City and County Management Association, which “can step in and help in instances just like this where they have people that can come in and make provisions that can get us through until we get someone else in here,” Setzer said.

An intern, whose name Setzer could not recall, who currently helps out in the City of Lenoir will arrive Monday evening to step in and begin working with Setzer and his team. Setzer added that Lois Andes, a former town council member, has agreed to come back in a part-time position to help the transition go smoothly.

“I swear on my life that I’m going to do the best job I can and get someone in here as soon as possible,” Setzer said. “There are still some things I need to educate myself on, but by this time next week, people will think we haven’t missed a beat.”
