Wilma Jean Nelson Hamby, 79, of Hudson passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at her home. Born Jan. 23, 1935, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Ella Smith Nelson and the wife of the late Wayne Hamby.
Mrs. Hamby loved her garden, her flowers and the birds. She had been active in the HUB in many of its activities. She had a special love for her dog, Max.
Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Jeanette Nichols; three brothers, James, Ed and John Nelson; and seven sisters, Nellie Nelson, Ruth Haynes, Pauline Holloway, Maude Holsclaw, Betina Johnson, Kathleen Sanders and Mary Wheeler.
Surviving are her three daughters, Paula Abee and husband Donald of Connelly Springs, Debbie Ritch and husband Thomas of Hudson, Tammy Johnson and husband Donald Mack of Stokesdale; her stepson, Steve Hamby of Lenoir; one sister, Helen Melton of Derma, Miss.; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mrs. Hamby’s life will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Charles Lewis and Pastor Finley McCoury officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Evans Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be: Mark Kelley, Cliff Watson, Jesse Bullman, Mack Johnson, Zachary Baker, Roger Ritch and Pat Crump.

Carolyn Sturgill Pritchard, 59, of Jefferson died on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at her home. Mrs. Pritchard was born June 25, 1954, in Taylorsville to the late James Weaver and Rose Roten Sturgill. Mrs. Pritchard was a loving wife, mother, sister and devoted grandmother. She was a member of Apple Grove Baptist Church. The family would like to thank Dr. Melinda Wonsick, Medi Home Hospice, and Linda Blevins, her guardian angel, for the care they offered during Carolyn's illness.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Ed Hall and Brother Anthony Roark. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014, at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pritchard is survived by her husband, Monte Baker Pritchard; two sons, James Paul Church and Zebulon Vance Pritchard both of Jefferson; three daughters, Tabitha Lynn Reed of Laurel Springs, Crystal Dawn Pritchard of Hudson, and Misty Blue Pritchard of West Jefferson; four sisters, Priscilla Osborne of North Wilkesboro, Libby Adams of Hudson, Carol Coffey of Lenoir and Dawn Plakas of Charlotte; brother, Joe Sturgill of Moravian Falls; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Marjorie Ruth Mawson Burch, 91, of Watkinsville, Ga., passed away, Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Family Life Enrichment Center in High Shoals, Ga. A native of Missouri, Mrs. Burch was born Jan. 7, 1923, to the late, Alonzo and Mary Christiansen Mawson. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. Burch; sisters, Matilda Mawson and Dorothy Vansandt; and brothers, Alvin and William Mawson.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lonna and John Hanley of Watkinsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Donna Burch of Lenoir, and Steve and Darlene Burch of Raleigh; sister, Merrilee Mickelson of Freeman, Mo.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at Littlejohn United Methodist Church, Lenoir, with the interment following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church sanctuary on Tuesday from 1-2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Littlejohn United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 4120 Littlejohn Church Road, Lenoir, NC 28645, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Grayson B. “Sam” Laney, 82, of Countryside Lane, Blowing Rock, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Blowing Rock Rehabilitation. He was born Sept. 28, 1931, in Caldwell County to the late Barton B. and Minnie Sherrill Laney.
Mr. Laney was retired from the furniture industry and was of the Baptist Faith. He was also a United States Navy Veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Regenia Steelman Laney of the home, and numerous extended family and friends.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at 12 noon at Blue Ridge Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Delbert Minner.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the graveside service at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
