John Roberts

John Lawton Roberts, 81, of Lenoir passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Roberts was born in Murphy to the late Steve E. Roberts and Leila Caroline Newton Roberts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Roberts; a daughter, Cindy Whitlock; a grandson, Logan Hall; brothers Clyde and Fred Roberts; and a sister, Pauline Smith. He was a master mechanic and owner of Roberts VW Service and was a member of the House of Prayer Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, David Hall, Cleveland Hall, Damon Roberts and Roger Roberts; his daughters, Darlene Myers, Judy Blackburn and Geraldine Long; a brother, Jack Roberts and wife Dana; sisters, Lila Mae Harrison, Oleta Harrison, Geneva Bumgarner, Ruth Kincaid, Hattie Smith and husband David, and Mary Bumgarner. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Roberts will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, in the Chapel of Pendry’s Funeral Home at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Leonard Younce officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 10, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Geneva Mayfield

Geneva Setzer Mayfield, 67, of Lenoir passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at her residence following a period of declining health.

Geneva was born on Sept. 16, 1946, in Caldwell County to the late John Wesley Setzer and Carrie Baker Setzer Clark. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her entire family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Mayfield; one son, Lee Roy Mayfield Jr.; brothers Michael Clark and John Setzer; sisters Mamie Setzer and Myrtle Hall; and three half-brothers, Boyd Setzer, James Setzer and Fred Setzer Sr.

Survivors include her four children, Wesley "Dude" Mayfield and wife Sandra Mayfield, Pedro "Pete" Mayfield, Mamie Branch, and John "Bubby" Mayfield and girlfriend Kathy Branch; three stepchildren, Nicholas Lennex, Michael Peak and Patty Gay Gilliland; brothers David Clark, Tommy Clark, Pat Clark and Charles Setzer; and sisters Teresa Tuttle and Minnie Moore. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jack Branch II and wife Teresa Keyes-Schwartz, Justina Branch and husband Kyle Hart, Leroy Branch, Tiffany Branch and Noah Mayfield; five step-grandchildren, Samantha Greene, Tyler Greene, Justin Branch, Heather Whisnant and Amber Roland; and two step-great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Gavin Greene.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at 1 p.m. at McDowell Independent Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Clyde Adams officiating.

Ruby Edwards

Ruby Grace Parham Edwards, 81 of Hickory passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at Trinity Village, Hickory.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, March 9, 2014, 3 p.m. at Catawba Memorial Park.

Pauline Thornburg

Pauline Pennell Thornburg, 88, of 1691 Draco Road, Lenoir, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at Lenoir Park Assisted Living after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Alabama to the late Coy Pennell Sr. and Myrtle Teeters Pennell. She was a homemaker, care giver and the oldest member of Dover Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings Thornburg; one brother, Coy Pennell Jr.; and two sisters, Addie Ruth Yount and Betty Reid.

She is survived by two sisters, Willie Brown of Lenoir and Maude Walker (husband Bobby) of Lenoir.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, March 10, 2014, at Dover Baptist Church. The Rev. Jerry Burnette will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service.

Beverly Hamby

Beverly Revon Hamby, 53, of Boomer died on Friday, March 7, 2014, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. She was born March 7, 1961, in Catawba County to Shelbia Jean Newton.

Mrs. Hamby was a CNA for Avanti of Wilkes, where she was dearly loved by all of her patients and co-workers. She attended Cornerstone Baptist Church of Wilkesboro.

Survivors include her husband, Randy Lynn Hamby of the home; her mother and stepfather, Shelbia Jean Newton Davis and husband Leroy of Hickory; one stepson, Elijah Ben Hartley of Kings Creek; a daughter-in-law, Tonya Hartley of Lenoir; two grandchildren, Johnathan Hartley and Taylor Hartley; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law and personal caregivers, Steve and Patsy Hamby; as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Hamby, Kim Whaley, Allen Hamby, Keith Hamby, Linda Bentley, Dale Hamby and Randall Hamby.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 10, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Todd Chapman. Interment will follow at Laurel Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Paul Gurley

Paul Thomas Gurley, 74, of Lenoir passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born Sept. 18, 1939, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Clarence Thomas and Annie Elizabeth Setzer Gurley and the husband of Mrs. Sue Ingram Gurley, to whom he was married for 47 years.

Paul was a retired builder and was retired from maintenance from the Caldwell County School System. He later volunteered then worked for Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He and his grandson Josh fashioned the goldfish pond that families enjoy at the Kirkwood location. He had also spent six years in the North Carolina National Guard.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Euless Gurley and two sisters, Kathryn Clark and Lillie Diggs.

Surviving other than his wife are his two children, Tommy Gurley and wife Lisa of Lenoir, and Paula Gurley of Lenoir; three sisters, Clara G. Wilson of Lenoir, his twin sister, Pauline (Polly) G. Crump and husband Pedro of Gamewell, and Lorraine (Rene) Runion of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Dean Gurley; brother-in-law Lyn Haddock of Greenville; six grandchildren, Maston Sanders, Josh Gurley, Dylan Gurley, Chase Edmisten, Kaelan Edmisten Brandon Moore; and one great-grandchild, Hailey Brooke Moore. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held 4 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Mount View Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Clark, Preacher Paul Gentry and Pastor Jeff Hoyle officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

Pallbearers will be Josh Gurley, Dylan Gurley, Chase Edmisten, Kaelan Edmisten, Chris Helton and Brandon Moore.
