Thomas Horton

Thomas Douglas Horton, 69, of Lenoir died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church in Lenoir with the Rev. Charlie Rivens officiating. Burial will be in Beaver Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 at the church prior to the service.

Mr. Horton was born March 29, 1944, in Wilkes County to the late Malcolm and Thelma Horton. He was owner of Horton’s Curb and Gutter Sections. Mr. Horton served in the United States Army and was a member of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was man of the year and a past treasurer. Mr. Horton won various golf tournaments. He was a member of the Pride of Caldwell Masonic Lodge #713 and was a past Masonic Master.

He was preceded in death by one stepsister, Dorothy “Dot” Owens; one brother, Malcolm Horton Jr.; and two stepbrothers, Kirksey “Bill” Cutherpson and Alonzo “Bubba” Cutherpson.

He is survived by his wife, Zan Horton of the home; two daughters, Talisha Bridges and friend Ashley Kelly of Cornelius, and Tosha Watson and husband Andy of Lenoir; two sons, Thomas Horton Jr. and wife Michelle, and Todd Horton, all of Lenoir; grandchildren, Taylor Horton, Shaundria Horton, Aerial Watson, Andy Watson Jr., Todd Horton Jr., Aliya Watson, and Jamison Kelly-Bridges; three stepsisters, Clara “Peggy” Rutherford of Morganton, Betty Peters of San Diego, Calif., Myrna Cutherpson of Morganton; and two brothers, James Stevenson Horton of Ferguson and Joseph Harold Horton of Winston-Salem.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Esther Lewis

Esther Pritchard Lewis, 76, went to heaven on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Gateway Nursing Center surrounded by her family who loved her dearly. She was born in Caldwell County on June 18, 1937, to the late Bill Pritchard and Crettie Huskey Pritchard.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Ralph Barrier; first husband, Bill Shatley; brothers, Elmer, Millard, Willard, and John Pritchard; and sisters, Lee Franklin and Wilma Whisnant.

Esther is survived by her children, Jim Barrier and wife Pla “Susan,” Cindy Barrier and Dan, Donald Shatley, and Lisa Gurley and husband Tommy; grandchildren, Jamie Barrier, Justin Barrier, Stacy Barrier, Phil Barrier, Nicole Benfield, Josh Gurley, Brandon Moore, and Dylan Gurley; great-grandchildren, Hailey Brooke Moore and Nathaniel Surratt; sister, Cora Barrier; special niece, Vickie Hurley; and numerous family members.

Esther’s burial will be private. The family will be gathering at the home of Tommy and Lisa Gurley.

Nancy Dunn

Nancy Parrish Dunn, 85, of Hickory died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Anita Beaver

Anita Darlene Adams Beaver, 52, of Lenoir died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Lennie Younce Sr.

Lennie Jay Younce Sr., 79, of Blowing Rock died March 15 after an extended illness. He was born May 2, 1934, to the late Walter Len and Fannie Wilcox Younce. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Clay Younce, and a sister, Louise Wilcox Cook.

Mr. Younce served proudly in the U.S. Marines. He attended Guilford College and returned to Lenoir to begin a career in insurance. He loved sports and devoted time to coaching young men in baseball, basketball and golf. He was an avid golfer and loved competing. He won several club championships and several National Lefty Righty Championships along with a Carolina Golf Association Father/Son Championship.

Survivors include his children, Lennie Jay Younce Jr. and wife Marla of Lenoir, Vicki Younce Williams and husband Sammy of Lenoir, and Kim Younce Turner and husband Randy of Hickory; brothers, Worth Younce of Lenoir and Jimmy Younce of Hudson; and sisters, Helen Craig of Lenoir, Glenda Winkler Morris of Hudson, Shirley Walker of Granite Falls and Myrtle Houck of Todd. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Lenoir. Memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Jack Gilbert

Jack Carol Gilbert, 69, of Bee Mountain Road, Lenoir, died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the residence. He was born Sept. 18, 1944, in Caldwell County to the late John Melton Gilbert and Violet Shell Gilbert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Ruth Brown Gilbert; son, Jack Vincent Gilbert; half-brother, John Gilbert; and sister, Patsy McCracken.

Mr. Gilbert was retired from the furniture industry after 45 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his companion, Mary Brunton of the home; four sons, Reginald Gilbert, Vilas Mark Gilbert and wife Carol Lynn, Daniel Gilbert and wife Robin, and Nathan Paul Gilbert, all of Lenoir; one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Bell and husband Wayne of Baton; grandchildren, Jessica Walker, Jennifer Watson, Angelicia Gilbert, Andrew Gilbert, Anthony Gilbert, India Gilbert, Tyler Gilbert, Stephanie Gilbert, Vanessa Gilbert and Amy Wilson; and great-grandchildren, Brett Watson, Kinsley Fowler, Mattie Walker and Andrea Gilbert.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gary Teague. Interment will follow at Gilbert Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Anthony Gilbert, Andrew Gilbert, Tyler Gilbert, John Brunton, Jimmy Brunton and Keith Bell.

Frances Ashby

Frances S. Ashby, 83, of Hudson passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

James Helton

James Sturgis Helton, 47, of Granite Falls passed away at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson on Friday, March 14, 2014.

Mr. Helton was born to Coleen Teague Helton and the late Sturgis Henry Helton in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Helton worked in textiles and attended Dudley Shoals Baptist Church.

Mr. Helton is preceded in death by his father.

Those left to cherish the memory of James Sturgis Helton include his mother and two brothers, Jerry Dale Helton of Granite Falls, and Randy Dean Helton (Brenda) of Icard.

Services for Mr. Helton will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Gordon West officiating.
