Yancey Sr.; two sons, Franklin Yancey Jr. (Jana) of Charlotte, and Cameron Yancey (Keri) of Blackstone, Va.; daughter, Allison Yancey of Richmond,Va.; mother, Rose Ann Smith (Waitsel B., dec’d.) of Lenoir; brother, Waitsel Smith Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Linda Leggett (Jerry) of Greenville; and a granddaughter, Madison Yancey of Blackstone, Va.
After graduating from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in speech pathology-audiology, she worked in Nottoway County Public Schools for 28 years. She served as President of the Blackstone Jr. Women’s Club as well as Chairman of the Art Department of the Blackstone Three Arts Club. Debbie was also one of the originators in starting the Blackstone’s Arts and Crafts Festival, which still thrives today.
Her most recent involvement has been Chairman of the Design Committee for Downtown Blackstone Inc. (DBI), where she was responsible for helping with the re-design of the facades of downtown buildings and “the hole." She has been involved in various businesses such as a Christmas shop which later became Yancey’s Fancy’s retail at Spencer’s Drug Store. She served as a legislative assistant to Delegates Frank Ruff, Lee Ware and Tommy Wright, which she felt gave her the opportunity to bring recognition back to her Blackstone area. Her greatest honor was receiving the Chamber of Commerce “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2012.
The list of Debbie’s leadership roles and activities goes on and on. This small list proves to show the life motto that Debbie Yancey lived by, “To love the journey, not the destination.” Debbie was an active church member where she served as parsonage chairman, taught classes, and was instrumental in renovating the sanctuary.
