Maynard Miller

Maynard Miller, 97, passed away at Frye Regional Medical Center, Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.

Dad was born on Jan. 18, 1917, in Caldwell County to the late Robert S. Miller and Ida Hall. He is preceded in death by his wife, Thurma Whisnant Miller.

Dad was retired from Hanes Co., in Hickory, and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Granite Falls.

He is survived by two sons, Gerald L. Miller and wife Patty Ann Miller of Marietta, Ga.; Terrell L. Miller and wife Carolyn Miller of Hudson; two grandsons, Lee Miller and wife Katrina Miller of Charlotte, and Terrell Lee Miller Jr. and wife Melissa Miller of Granite Falls; one granddaughter, Laura Ann McClellnan of Atlanta, Ga.; three great-granddaughters, Brandi Gedding of Claremont, Gwendolyn Miller of Asheville, and Riley Miller of Charlotte; two great-great-grandsons, Grayson Lee Miller of Charlotte, and Addision McClellan of Atlanta, Ga.; two great-great-great-grandchildren of Claremont.

Pallbearers will be Terry Miller Jr., Lee Miller, Kevin Ward, Ned Ward, Max Ward, and Jason Gedding.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, from 2–3 p.m. at Mackie Funeral Home in Granite Falls. The service will follow in the chapel at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert B. Evans Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

Staley Smith

Staley Smith, 77, from Icard went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Grace Hospital, Morganton. He was born Oct. 31, 1936, son of the late Marvin Pickney Smith and Veada Robertson Smith. Mr. Smith served his country in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by two daughters, Maddaline Cline of Lenoir, and Pamela Sherrill of Monroe; grandchildren, Westlee and Linda Hodge, Amber Hodge, and Hannah Hodge; and one great-grandchild, Jana Hodge.

The family will receive friends at Lovelady Baptist Church, Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Westlee Hodge and the Rev. Floyd Crouch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Military honors will be provided by DAV Chapters 84 and 6.

Douglas Earp

Douglas "Doug" Walsh Earp, 59, of Granite Falls passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Evans Funeral Service & Crematory of Lenoir.

James Hunt

James Lee “Jim” Hunt, 85, of Benfield’s Landing, Lake James in Nebo, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014. Born in Cleveland County on Oct. 7, 1928, he was the son of the late John Lee Hunt and Kate Harrill Hunt. Jim was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church. Along with his wife, Betty, he was an avid walleye fisherman at both Lake James and Lake Fontana. This was their favorite hobby throughout the years. They have operated Benfield’s Landing and Marina at Lake James since 1973, creating many years of good memories there for family and friends. Jim continued to have a very active and happy lifestyle despite many major health issues. He was loved by many and will be missed.

Jim is survived by his wife, Betty Grayson Hunt of the home; sons, Scott Hunt and his wife, Sherry, of Lake James, Donnie Hunt of Lake James, and Steve Hunt and his wife, Gilda, of Polkville; grandchildren, Amy Hunt Miller and her husband, Cameron, Jamie Hunt, Jennifer Street and her husband, Kevin, Cory Hunt, Kayla Hunt, Patty Tripp, and Randy Spangler and his wife, Jennie; great-grandchildren, Ethan Miller, Evan Miller, Trevor Webb, Ashely Webb, Toby Street, and Andrew Bruno; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Joe Hunt and his wife, Joan, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a sister, Betty Blackwelder and her husband, Dick, of Cherryville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Hunt; sisters, Jane Hobbs and Frances Hunt; and his daughter-in-law, Brenda Hunt.

The memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas St. John officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. prior to the service.
