Walter Soots

Walter Andy Soots, 76, of Hudson went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice – Hudson.

Born in Wilkes County, he was the son of the late Bill Soots and Ollie Baldwin Soots.

Mr. Soots served in the United States Army during World War II and retired from Bernhardt Furniture Industries after 45 years of service. He was a member of South Lenoir Church of God and sang in the church choir. He also loved gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Annie Sumpter Soots of the home; son, Michael Walter Soots and wife Pam of Lenoir; daughters, Catherine Bowman and husband Charles of Bethlehem, and Susan Babb and husband Charles of Hudson; seven grandchildren, Chad Moore and wife April, Alisa Carlton, Preston Babb, Hunter Soots, Kristin Tyler and husband Ryan, Nick Bowman, Chad Wendelborg and wife Amy; and six great-grandchildren, Sam, Khristian, Bella Mae, Bailey, Bethany, and Natalie. He is also survived by his brothers, Bradley Soots, Ray Soots, Charles Soots, Harold Soots, and A.V. Soots; and sisters, Maggie Gragg and Katrina Pitts. He is further survived by his canine companion, Sophie.

Services honoring Mr. Soots will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at South Lenoir Church of God with the Rev. Kenneth Hensley and the Rev. Howard Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park with full military honors.

The family will receive friends at the church from 10-11 a.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Moore, Preston Babb, Casey Moore, Nick Bowman, Ryan Tyler, and Rick Bowman.

Margaret Russ

Margaret A. Russ, 73, of Hudson passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, in Asheville.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Evans Funeral Service & Crematory of Lenoir.

Hazel Arnette

Hazel M. Arnette, 92, of Lenoir went to meet the Lord Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. She was born July 14, 1921, in Watauga County to the late Bynum Moore and Ida Parlier Moore.

Mrs. Arnette was a graduate from Bethel High School in Sugar Grove and moved to Caldwell County and retired from American Effird Mills early in her life, and then she was a homemaker. She loved working outdoors in her yard and especially in her flowers. She also loved quilting.

Mrs. Arnette was a member of First Baptist Church of Whitnel, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and at the age of 92 was still teaching. She was a faithful servant to her Lord Jesus Christ.

She is also preceded in death by her husband, Ray D. Arnette, to whom she was married for 65 years; brothers, Ivey Moore (wife Ada), Clyde Moore (wife Gladys) and Dana Moore (wife Hazel); four grandchildren, Timothy Max Woods, James Terrell (Jimmy) Andrews, one infant grandson and one infant granddaughter.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Geraldine Woods (husband Max) of Lenoir, Jean Andrews of Lenoir, Shirley Austin (husband Jerry) of Hudson, and Glenda Bolick (husband Dale) of Huntersville; her siblings, Lewis Moore (wife Violet), Blanche Hamm, Bertha Greene (husband Willard), and Betty Greene (husband Howard), all of Lenoir; grandchildren, Sharon Alley (husband Tim) of Hudson, Revonda Winkler (husband Greg) and Beth Prestwood (husband Hoss) of Lenoir, Ryan Bolick (wife Kristin) of Davidson, Chris Austin (wife Bambi) of Lenoir, T.J. Austin of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Keri Magana (husband Kiko) of Seattle, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Shannon Andrews (husband Michael) of Concord, Amber Alley of Lenoir, Abby Prestwood and Cain Prestwood of Lenoir, David Alley of Hudson, Elizabeth Bolick and Charlotte Bolick of Davidson, and Olivia Austin of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends Sunday Aug. 4, 2013, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Whitnel.

Funeral services will be following the receiving at 3 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Stuart White, the Rev. Sam Craven and the Rev. Don Ingle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Evon Summerlin

Evon Elaine Summerlin, 61, of Moombeam Lane, Lenoir, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.
