Ronald Collins

Ronald Collins, 69, of Granite Falls went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. He was born Oct. 24, 1944, to the late Eugene and Ila Lucille Collins.

He is preceded in death by both parents; five brothers, Eugene Everette Collins Jr., Jack E. Collins, Ralph Collins, Donald Ray Collins, and Johnny Allen Collins; and one sister, Doris C. Richard.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda L. Collins of the home; four daughters, Beth and husband David Greene of Granite Falls, Ronda Collins and Keith Holt of Granite Falls, Michelle and husband Jeffrey Kirby of Lenoir, and Teresa McCann of Granite Falls; one son, David and wife Angela Craig of Jacksonville; three sisters, Linda K. Collins of Hickory, Becky and husband Lee Starnes of Granite Falls, and Cora and husband Dan Reid of Bethlehem; one brother, Fred W. Collins of Allen, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, 2 p.m. at Mackie Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation will follow the service. The Rev. David Bean and the Rev. Paul Puett will officiate. The burial will be private.

Inez Brittain

Inez Wilcox Brittain, 85, of Brittain Lane, Lenoir, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. She was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Ashe County to the late Charlie Stokes and Mary Alverta W. Wilcox. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Larry A. Brittain; two brothers, Clyde and Fred Wilcox; one sister, Coleen Wilcox; and one grandson, Daniel Joseph Bruce Jr.

She was a homemaker and a member of Cajah’s Mountain Church of God.

Survivors include one son, Larry David Brittain and wife Crystal of Lenoir; two daughters, Mrs. Rita Brittain Bruce and husband Daniel of New London, and Mrs. Renda Brittain Walker and husband Marty of Lenoir; three brothers, Ernest Wilcox, Jack Wilcox and wife Marie, both of Lenoir, and Charlie Wilcox Jr. and wife Jane of Morganton; one sister, Valdeana “Dean” Martin and husband Charles of Lenoir; and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Sam Abee, Charles Martin Jr. and Brother Mike Pennell. Interment will follow at Laurel Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Nehemiah Bruce, Jonathan Bruce, Joel Walker, Isaiah Brittain, Charles Martin III and Tyler Martin.

Russell Babb

Russell Keith Babb, “Russell the Painter,” 53, of Asheboro, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at his residence. He was born May 12, 1960, in Caldwell County to Robert Elliot and Judy Childers Babb of Asheboro. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jewel Addie Childers and Spurgeon S. Childers; and paternal grandparents, Nora Corrine Babb and John Lloyd Babb.

Mr. Babb was a self-employed painter.

Survivors in addition to his parents, include his companion and caregiver, Debbie Flynn of the home; two sisters, Pamela Babb Jones and husband David Lynn of Liberty, and Martha Babb Moose and husband Tim of Greensboro; six nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Belleview Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jim Hamby. Military honors will be proved by Caldwell County Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Bertha VanHorn

Bertha Louise Cresson VanHorn, 88, of Valdese died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014.

Funeral Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.

The family will receive friends Sunday 2-3 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.

Margaret Holman

Margaret Trexler Holman, 92, passed away on Jan. 23, 2014, at Camelot Manor Nursing Facility in Granite Falls. Margaret was born on June 19, 1921, in Watauga County to the late John Luther Trexler and Minnie Eldredge Trexler.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband and father of her children, James Vernon Blevins; her second husband, Gene Holman; four brothers, Richard Trexler, Thomas Trexler, John Trexler and Charles Trexler; and two sisters, Ruth Hollars and infant Shelby Jean Trexler.

Margaret was an avid flower gardener and was especially fond of Iris and Day Lillies. She was a member of Philadelphia Lutheran Church in Granite Falls.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Jim Blevins and wife Pam of Granite Falls; two daughters, Linda Walsh and husband Jerry of Morganton, and Nancy Pope and husband Larry of Boomer; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Moss of Hudson, Dawn Whisnant of Drexel, Wesley Pope and wife Amy of Boomer; four great-grandchildren, McKenna Moss, Kailey Pope, Keegan Clarke and Easton Ross; one brother, Earl Trexler and wife Nancy of Blowing Rock; and two sisters, Elizabeth DuBose of Seale, Ala., and Lucille Young of Blowing Rock.

The family will receive friends at Philadelphia Lutheran Church on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, from 2 until 3. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Reverend Terrell Long and the Rev. Leonard Bolick officiating. Burial will follow the service at Littlejohn Methodist Church Cemetery on the Littlejohn Church Road.

Ricky Eckard

Ricky “Rick” Dean Eckard, 62, of Meadow Creek Drive, Hudson, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Duke Medicine Pavilion. He was born June 27, 1951, in Caldwell County to the late Clyde William and Florence Coffey Eckard.

Mr. Eckard was employed as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Hickory for 42 years. He had more than 500 customers on his route. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Granada Farms Men’s Association and the Spa Athletic Club in Hickory. He was a member of Dry Ponds Baptist Church, where he taught the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was also a United States Army Veteran serving in Vietnam. Rick was the proud grandfather of his first grandchild born Sept. 20, 2013.

Survivors include his wife and the love of his life, Mrs. Sally Sullivan Eckard of the home; two sons, Jason Eckard and wife Mary Ann of Cornelius, and Chase Eckard of Charlotte; stepdaughter, Katy Lail of Hudson; one sister, Donna Kanupp of Lenoir; three brothers, Carroll Eckard, Kevin Eckard and Kerry Eckard; and grandchild Evelyn “Evie” Eckard.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Dry Ponds Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Rick Crouse, the Rev. Phillip Latta and the Rev. Josh Dellinger. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by Caldwell County Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

The family would like to say a special thank you to family and friends for their love and support, and medical staff of Duke Medical Center for their love, care and compassion over the past six months.
