Pearl Childers

Pearl Flowers Childers, 72, of Granite Falls passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir.

Mrs. Childers was born in Caldwell County to the late Reid Flowers and Eva Woodruff Flowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dave Childers and a sister, Nellie Kate Flowers.

She was retired from the Bernhardt Furniture Industries in the main office, a member of New Beginning Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, and was a 4-H Club leader in Caldwell County.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Paula Hopper and husband Johnny of Granite Falls; a granddaughter, Lindsey P. Brewer of Lenoir; a stepdaughter, Manuela Miller of Lenoir; a stepson, Paul Childers of Lenoir; sisters, Carolyn Walker and Evelyn Curtis of Lenoir, Hellen Poole and Ruby Fite of Granite Falls, Mary Bean of Arizona, and an honorary sister, Margaret Smith of Lenoir.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Union Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Sam Craven, the Rev. Daniel Buchanan and Mr. Tom Watson officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 1 until 3 p.m. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Hopper, Charles Poole, Wilson Walker, Jeff Curtis, J. D. Starnes and Jason Deyton.

John Douglas "June Boy" Corpening Jr., 59, of Lenior died Thursday, Jan 23, 2014.  Funeral services will be Sunday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m. at ER McGimpsey Sr. Memorial Chapel. The family will receive 2-2:55 p.m. Ebony Funeral Service is assisting the Corpening family.

William Keaton Jr.

William Rizzio Keaton Jr., 85, of Lenior died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014. Services are incomplete and will announched by Ebony Funeral Services of Lenior.

Janice Gragg

Janice Gail Bradshaw Gragg, 66, of Lenoir passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held at a later time.

Edith Laws

Edith Palmer Laws, 86, formerly of 1205 Lenoir Ave., Lenoir, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care-Hudson. She was born July 23, 1927, in Caldwell County to the late Lawrence Narvell and Faye Crisp Palmer Sr. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Laws Jr.; two brothers, Lawrence Palmer Jr. and William (Bill) C. Palmer; and a sister, Shirley Rader.

Edith was a 1944 graduate of Collettsville High School, where she worked in the principal’s office and the cafeteria while in high school. She and Bertha Belle Moore attended Governor’s School in Raleigh while in high school. She met her husband to be at this time, since he was her school bus driver. She had a “nail keg” seat right beside the bus driver. It was “love at first sight” for them both and it endured until their deaths.

Mrs. Laws was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps. She was a 1948 graduate of the H.F. Long Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse at Dula Hospital, Caldwell Memorial Hospital and Blackwelder Hospital as well as hospitals in Charleston and Point Pleasant, W.Va. Later in life she worked with her husband and four sons at Caldwell Tile & Carpet, with her daughter Rena at the Supreme Restaurant, and with her daughter Robbi at the Lenoir Blood Bank. She was a volunteer at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care-Kirkwood in Lenoir and was a member of Central Advent Christian Church. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and cute giggle.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Laws III of Riverside, Calif., Rex Laws and wife Elaine of Basking Ridge, N.J., Randolph “Randy” Laws and wife Betty Neil of Lenoir, and Richard (Rick) Laws and wife Karen of Granite Falls; two daughters, Robbi Laws Whittlesey and husband Cliff, and Rena Laws Pilkenton and husband Randall, all of Lenoir; one brother, Michael Palmer; two sisters, Marjorie O’Neill and Carole Palmer; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

All services will be private.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Loree Lail

Mona Loree Brooks Lail, 92, of Granite Falls went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014. She was born on June 14, 1921, in Lincoln County to the late Robert Lee Brooks and Fannie Sain Brooks.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Raymond Lail; her infant daughter, Ramadonna Lail; three son-in-law, Douglas Clark, Wayne McAbee and Pat Hicks; four brothers, Ray Sain, Forest Brooks, Lee Roy Brooks, and Colin Brooks; and three sisters, Evelyn Nance, Lillian Shuford, and Winola Jolly.

She was a member of Lovelady Baptist Church, where she truly loved her church family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Barbara Coffey and husband Clayton (A.C.) of Granite Falls, Jane Hall and husband Keith of Sawmills, Janice Clark of Lenoir, and Susie McAbee of Granite Falls. She is also survived by her brother, the Rev. Yates Brooks of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren, Terri Swanson and husband Larry, Patti Johnson and husband Jeff, Misty Starnes and husband Ike, Douglas Clark Jr. and wife Libby, Eddie Anderson Jr. and wife Angela, Chris Anderson and wife Melissa, and Robin Coffey; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one special friend, Carol Powell; and one special niece Linda Hewitt

The Funeral service will be Sunday Jan. 26, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Lovelady Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Crouch and the Rev. Brian Hefner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

A Celebration of Life Service for James R. “Randy” Hurst, who passed away Dec. 27, 2013, will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Kingsport Renaissance Center Courtyard, Kingsport, Tenn.

Jane Williams

Jane Sherrill Williams, 77, of Hudson died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at her residence. She was born Aug. 16, 1936, in Cramerton to the late George William and Theresa Throneburg Sherrill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert B. Williams, and one brother, Wayne M. Sherrill.

Mrs. Williams graduated from Hudson High School and the Hickory Beauty School. She began her career at Martha’s Beauty Salon, then opened her own business at Crossroads Beauty Salon. She continued her work at Martin’s in Whitnel. She enjoyed working as a beautician for over 57 years.

Jane enjoyed traveling and attending the Dinner Theatres near and far. Her kindness and generosity touched many lives as she shared her talents, especially cooking and baking, with her large family and many friends.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Baxter Williams of Hudson, and Lee Allen Williams and wife Connie; one grandson, Owen Scott Williams; one granddaughter, Carsen Lee Williams, all of Granite Falls; three brothers, Dwight C. Sherrill and wife Dottie of Weaverville, Kohn Sherrill and wife Bobbie of Greensboro, and Dennis A. Sherrill and wife Ann of Isle of Palms, S.C.; four sisters, Eloise Setzer and husband Joe Sr. of Hudson, Myra Hudson and husband Harry of Maryland, Martha Price of Asheville, and Hope Kizer and husband Eddie of Granite Falls; one sister-in-law, Wanita Sherrill of Hudson; and many loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and children of her siblings.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hudson, conducted by Pastor Ann Kelly.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. one hour prior to the service at the church.

Shirley Herman Reid, 69, of Granite Falls died Friday, Jan. 24, 2014.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Bass-Smith Granite.
