Donald Chester

Donald Lee Chester, 76, of Lenoir went home to reunite with his mother Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at Camelot Manor in Granite Falls. Born Feb. 26, 1937, in Caldwell County, Mr. Chester was a son of the late Arlie Shell and Bessie Clippard Chester.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Rickey Chester and Alan Chester, and one brother, David Chester.

He was retired from Bernhardt Furniture Company and loved riding motorcycles, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna Cassidy and husband Kenneth of Lenoir; siblings, Bradford Chester and wife Anne of Gastonia, Blanche Miller, Ruby Chester, Ruth Chester, Helen Arney, Eddie Chester and wife Tonya, Linda Shoun, Mabel Keller and Wanda Walker, all of Lenoir; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, from 3 until 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service.

A special Thank You goes to the staff and residents of Camelot Manor for their wonderful care and friendship shown to Mr. Chester.

Pauline Brady

Pauline Bumgarner Brady, 96, of Granite Falls died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mackie Funeral Home. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Lovelady Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ernestine Hagaman

Ernestine Williams Hagaman, 99, of Lenoir passed away Jan. 29, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Hagaman was born in Allendale, S.C., to the late Robert W. Williams and Estelle Jenkins Williams. Mrs. Hagaman is also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, J.G. Hagaman, former superintendent of Lenoir City Schools, and her son, Bob Hagaman.

She was a retired Elementary school teacher with the Caldwell County School System, a member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir and a member of the Lenoir Women’s Club.

Those left to cherish memory are her daughter, Gail Hagaman Bebber of Roanoke, Va., and her daughter-in-law, Barbara Mayfield Hagaman of Lenoir.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with Dr. David Smith officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Doris Herman

Doris Bentley Herman, 82, of Hudson passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Mrs. Herman was born in Caldwell County to the late Art Van Buren Bentley and Rosa Edna Calloway Bentley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Travis Wilson Herman, and her sisters, Demple Sparks, Dople Austin, Dovie Craven and Della “Macie” Wynn.

Although she had no children, she leaves behind 40 nephews, 35 nieces and numerous loved ones that she cared for and loved very much.

She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and worked at Hardee’s in Hudson and the Star Drive-In. Peopled loved the biscuits she made.

The Family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Friendship Baptist Church form 1–2 p.m.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 2 at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Sam Craven, the Rev. Lonnie Bell, the Rev. Frank Denning and Mr. Heath Wynn officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Austin Sr., Donnie Austin Jr., Paul Austin, Jason Sparks, Heath Wynn and Richard Wynn.

John Holler

John C. Holler, 85, of Lenoir passed away at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014. He was born Dec. 17, 1928, in Caldwell County to the late Earl and Mattie Crump Holler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother and his first wife, Edna Earl Holler.

Mr. Holler was retired from the US Army with 22 years of service. During his service, he was awarded many medals and commendations.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol M. Holler of the home, and other family members, Teresa Shoun and husband Brian Fox, Donna Cribbs, Kim Setzer and husband Keith, Brooke, Chase and Caden Rideout, Madison Setzer and Savannah Cribbs; and two aunts, Catherine Teague, Cleo Wilson and husband Guy, and several cousins.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, S.C.

Myra Chandler

Myra Coffey Chandler, 62, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. She was born in Caldwell County on Oct. 5, 1951, to Maynard Moore Coffey and the late Della Borders Coffey.

In addition to her mother she was preceded in death by her son, Anthony Scott Wilson.

She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Sanders and husband Jake, April Edwards and husband Jimmy, Leslea Coffey Prestwood and husband Gary, Teresa Coffey Hale and Grady Bentley; brothers, David Coffey and wife Melissa, and Mark Coffey and wife Amy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Myra’s life will be conducted by the family, 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Rufus Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.

Peggy Roby

Peggy Lynn Roby, 74, of Granite Falls passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Roby was born in Oakland County, Mich., to the late William Clancy and Pearl Kelly Clancy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Roby; a brother; three sisters; and a great-grandson, Rowan Roby. She was a homemaker and loved to grow house plants. She enjoyed many different types of music.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Fred Gulda and his girlfriend Tonya Carver of Granite Falls, and Leonard Roby and wife Rosemary of Arkansas; her daughter, Lynnett Lang and husband John of Michigan; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her faithful Shih Tzu dog “Buddy.”

Services for Mrs. Roby will be private.

Phyllis Stoots

Phyllis Stephanie Winebarger Stoots, 72, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Lenoir, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla. She was born March 22, 1941, in Caldwell County to the late Ambrose and Pearl Clark Winebarger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lynn Green; and one brother, Rick Winebarger.

Mrs. Stoots was retired from Yale Industries and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Garland Stoots of the home; two sons, Tony Stoots and wife Jan of Gamewell, and Jason Stoots and wife Paula of Granite Falls; one brother, Larry Winebarger of Lenoir; one sister, Peggy Craig of Lenoir; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Dennis Smith

Dennis Stanley Smith, 62, passed away on Dec. 22, 2013. Dennis was born in Evanston, Ill., south of Chicago, on Aug. 11, 1952, to Albert Stanley Smith and the late Yvonne Margaret Dillion.

He served in the Navy in his early 20s and then left with an honorable discharge. After his time in the service, he worked for General Electric and worked for his longtime best friend, Travis Bumgardner, at Appalachian Paving and Construction. He loved traveling with his former wife and lifelong friend, Rita Craig Pritchard, and their child, Amy Louise Smith. His mother, father and family were what meant most to him. He was a member of North Catawba Baptist Church, growing up and formed a strong bond with Jesus and his faith. He loved music and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother Daniel Albert Smith and granddaughter Sophia Yvonne West.

He is survived by his son, Kerry Isaac West; daughter, Amy Louise Smith; grandchildren, Ashlee Danielle Bumgardner, Aydan Malachi Russell, Breanna Yvonne West, Anna Louise Russell, and Ava-Adora Alexandra Russell; his brother, James Clyde Smith; his sisters, Nancy Louise Smith Williams and Karen Frances Smith Parrish; and his former wives, Rita Craig Pritchard and Donna Dula.

In honor of Dennis Stanley Smith, we are going to celebrate his life at North Catawba Baptist Church on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Church.
