Basil G. Smith, 77, of Granite Falls passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
Mr. Smith was born in Caldwell County to the late Boston C. Smith and Magnolia Bollinger Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Samuel Smith; sisters, Jerelene Pierce and Nathalee Haas; and a brother, Larry “Buck” Smith. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, retired from MDI and a member of Dudley Shoals Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Starnes Smith of the home; his daughters, Antonia Michelle Joyner and husband Alvin of Charlotte, and Stormi Bova of Raleigh; a stepdaughter, Judy Dishman of Lenoir; a stepson, Jerry “Josh” Teague and wife Eva of Granite Falls; a granddaughter, Felicia Watson and husband Andy of Granite Falls, and great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Watson, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a niece, Janet Webb.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Winkler, the Rev. Don Ingle and the Rev. Gordon West officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church.
Serving as pallbearers will be Delano Young, Denny Hall, Roger Shull, Andy Watson, Butch Smith and Buddy Shull.

Amelia Ester Sanders Adams, 91, of Old Sampson Road, Lenoir, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at the residence. She was born May 10, 1922, in Wilkes County to the late Grandville and Celia Church Sanders. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Adams; one son, R. L. Adams; one daughter, Celia Robbins; and granddaughter, Amelia Hendrix.
Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Nannie Hendrix and husband Thomas Ed of Buffalo Cove, and Judy Kabler of the home; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at noon at Adams Family Cemetery conducted by Preacher Joe Helton.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. Adams’ grandsons.
An honorary pallbearer will be Steve Edmisten.

Arlette Juliette Papot Nipper, 84, of Lenoir passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Camelot Nursing Center in Granite Falls.

Jean Estep Guy, 68, of Hudson passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at her residence. Mrs. Guy was born in Avery County to the late Will and Anna Trivette Estep Driscoll. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Ray Guy; three brothers, Thomas, Creed and Tim Estep; two sisters, Marie Mitchell and Rosie Greene; one grandson, Aaron Guy; and her grandmother, who raised her, Ora Estep.
Mrs. Guy was retired from Broyhill Furniture, was of the Baptist faith and loved her family, very much.
Survivors include one son, Larry Guy and wife Donna of Hudson; a grandson, Brent “B.J.” Guy; four sisters, Gladys Stout, Teresa Barbson, Paula Henneha and husband Moses, and Donna Kay Hanes and husband Thomas; one brother, Ronald Estep and wife Roberta; and a sister-in-law, Denise Estep.
The comfort and honor of your presence is requested at the funeral service for Mrs. Guy on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, in the Piney Grove Church of Christ in Butler, Tenn., at 3 p.m., with Mr. Dean Estep, minister, and Brother Freddy Stapleton officiating. Music will be under the direction of Melanie Guy. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. in the church, prior to the service on Thursday.
The graveside service will follow in the Abe Trivette Cemetery in the Poga community of east Tennessee. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
The family would like to thank Caldwell Hospice for all the love and care shown to Mrs. Guy and her family during her illness.
