Obituaries for Feb. 6, 2014
Juanita Bowman Herman, 83, of Lenoir passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Gateway Nursing Home in Lenoir.
Mrs. Herman was born on April 11, 1930, in Caldwell County to the late Jacob Cleveland Bowman and Cyron Clarke Bowman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Earp; her second husband, Guy Herman; one son, Barry Randall Earp; two sisters, Eva Bowman Angley and Vergie Bowman Baldin; and one niece, Tracy Angley.
Those left to cherish her memory include seven nieces, three nephews, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel. Burial will be at a later date.

Arlette Juliette Papot Nipper, 84, of Lenoir passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Camelot Manor Nursing Center. Born March 14, 1929, in Niort, France, she was the daughter of the late André Leon and Marguerite Corlieu Papot and the wife of the late Richard Earl Nipper, a former publisher of the Lenoir News-Topic.
Mrs. Nipper lived in Lenoir for 54 years. As a child, she lived in Saint-Cybardeaux, France, where she met and married U.S. Army Sgt. Richard Nipper. Following his return from France they moved first to Knoxville, then Bristol, Tenn. While in Lenoir, she had worked for many years at Bumbarger’s Book Store. Arlette dearly loved her family, animals and her flowers.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Nipper Hartley and husband Robey; her son, Kasey Nipper; and grandchildren, Judson Corpening, Drew Hartley and wife Alicia, Colin Hartley and Courtney Hartley.
A service celebrating Mrs. Nipper’s life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with the Rev. Robert Hinman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will take place in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Deborah Lynn Bryant, 58, of Sunrise Ridge, Vilas, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 4, 1955, in Lexington, Ky., to the late Joseph Z. and Mary L. Gay Debski.
Mrs. Bryant was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Bryant of the home; one son, Brandon Bryant of the home; two daughters, Carrie Bryant of the home, and Ronell Rimes and husband James of Hampstead; brother, David Debski and wife Monica of Morganton; sister, Barbara Debski of Conover; and grandchildren, Jacob and Nathaniel Rimes and Emily Morris.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at 6 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Preacher Horace Minton and the Rev. Darrell Roberts.
The family will speak to friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one’s local homeless shelter or to Living Water Ministries in Boone.

Howard Thomas Swafford, 86, of Connelly Springs died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at 2 p.m., at Whitnel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m.
