Mattie Key

Mattie Byrd Key, daughter of Parks and Alice Byrd, passed away at her residence Dec. 12, 2013. Mrs. Key was born in McDowell County, W.Va., March 28, 1924.

In addition to her parents and eight siblings, Mrs. Key was preceded in death by Ray Key, her husband of 68 years, an infant son, and a daughter, Thelma Burton.

Mrs. Key was a member of Pisgah Baptist church, a homemaker and caregiver.

Mrs. Key leaves behind her caregiver-granddaughter, Mattie Tackett; a daughter, Gail Perkins and husband Terry of Lenoir; two sons, Raymond Key and wife Carol of Kernersville, and Allen Key and Kimberly Sanders of Lenoir; Luther Burton, son-in-law; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; also several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Pisgah Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Miller officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dale Key, James Tackett, Jeff Sigmon, Barry McDonald, Scott Burton and Todd Shuford.

David Griffin

David "Jerry" Griffin, 75, of Valdese passed away on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care, following a period of declining health.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Heritage Funeral Service & Crematory of Valdese.

Jean Coleman

Jean Kathleen McColl Coleman, 81, of Rock Hill, S.C., has been promoted into glory and into the arms of her beloved savior after a lifetime of service. The Master called his faithful servant home on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. Mrs. Coleman began missionary service in Brazil in 1962 with the Presbyterian Church (US) and later with the Presbyterian Church in America.

She was born on April 4, 1932, in Miami, Fla., to the late Genevieve Baker Bright and Kinsey McColl. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, James Olin Coleman, and a son, Stephen Olin Coleman.

Survivors include two sons, David Allen Coleman and wife Kimberly of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Michael Anders Coleman and wife Billie of Rock Hill, S.C.; a daughter, Ms. Carole Irene Sweet of Lenoir; one brother, James L. Bright and wife Glenis of Spring Hill, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Mary Kathleen Cline, Caroline Elizabeth Sweet, Miriam Anne Coleman, Christina Jean Coleman, Samuel Caleb Coleman, Matthew Olin Coleman and Emily Anders Coleman; and four great-grandchildren, Aiden Michael Cline, Kaylee Marie Sweet, Rhylee Jane Wyant, and Cooper Bennett Coleman.

A celebration of her life will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church, 605 Bost Road, Morganton, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013. Family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Gary and Melody DuBois, Wycliffe Bible Translators, P.O. Box 628200, Orlando, FL 32862-8200.

Rachel Howell

Rachel Lynn Thompson Howell, 69, of Bethlehem went home to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Ted and Aliene Thompson.

In addition to both her parents she was preceded in death by an infant son, Steven Scott Howell, and one sister, Thea Lewis.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Robert Howell of the home; three sons, Robert Douglas Jr. and wife Julia Howell, Todd and wife Kim Howell, and Scott and wife Sherrie Howell, of Bethlehem; five sisters, Nolene Bremer of Iowa, Colene Sayers of Ohio, Beverly Kelley of Ohio, Barby Travis of Missouri, and Debbie Wilson of Alabama; seven grandchildren, Bambi Howell, Brandi Walker, Tuffer Howell, Colt Howell, T’neal Herman, Zeke Howell, and Luke Howell; and four great-grandchildren, Anna Kaylor, Lane Kaylor, Haley Walker, and Carson Walker.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Rock Chapel Church of God in Granite Falls with the Rev. Nathan Leasure and the Rev. Ron Leasure officiating. The family will receive friends following the service from 11–12 noon. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery.

Kelvin Dula Sr.

Kelvin Thurston Dula Sr., 56, of Willow Street, Lenoir, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born March 30, 1957, in Caldwell County to the late James Calvin and Bessie Moore Dula. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Dula, and one sister, the Rev. Donna Corpening.

Mr. Dula was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include mother of his children, Debra Dula of Lenoir; two sons, James Kelvin Dula and wife Erica, and Thurston Dula Jr., both of Lenoir; two daughters, Kelly Largent and Niecy Dula, both of Lenoir; three brothers, Roland Dula and wife Dawn of Fayetteville, Steven Dula and James Calvin Dula Jr., both of Lenoir; one sister, Faith Banner and husband the Rev. Jesse Banner of Lenoir; grandchildren, Marquiya Witherspoon, Jeremiah Largent, Jariel Dula, Gerard Felder Jr., Nivea Dula, Kynzlee Dula, Kylee Dula and Zaidyn Howell; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church with the Rev. James Perkins and the Rev. James Wilfong presiding. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.
