Doris Martine

A sweet angel on earth, Doris Cornelius Martine, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at the Villages of Wilkes in North Wilkesboro. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William Martine. Ms. Martine was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Hopkinton, Iowa, to Frank and Clara Wilson. As a young girl, she helped bake pies in her mother’s restaurant. Later on she met her husband, who had returned from serving in WWII, married and had three sons, John Martine of Milwaukee, Ore., Richard Martine of Lenoir, and Kenneth Martine of Owen, Wis. They reared their sons in the lovely town of Woodstock, Ill. Doris was faithful to her Lutheran church and was an active member. For years, Doris worked for an electric company. After their children were grown, she and her husband moved to Florida, where they resided for several years until they decided to buy a camper and live all over the United States. They eventually returned to Florida until their son Richard married a woman from North Carolina. At that point, they decided to settle down close to them in Lenoir. They fell in love with North Carolina and began gardening. Doris shared her bountiful harvest with anyone who walked past their house, where she piled produce in boxes.

Mrs. Martine was blessed with nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was a gentle woman who enjoyed a hot cup of tea and visits from her friends and family.
