Virginia Jensen

Virginia Katherine Handley Jensen, 87, of Lenoir died following a lengthy battle with dementia and Alzheimer's Disease at her home on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013. Virginia was born in Shubert, Neb., on July 17, 1926, to the late Arthur Lawrence Handley and Mattie Katherine Barker Handley.

Virginia attended Walnut Grove Country School and later graduated from Shubert High School. During WWII she worked at a Boeing Aircraft plant in Wichita, Kan., that built B-29s for the war effort. Virginia continued her education at the University of Nebraska and Peru State Teachers College, and after college became a school teacher. While in college, she met her future husband, Donald Jensen, who she married in Shubert on July 30, 1950. After living in Hamburg, Iowa, they moved to Saint Louis, Mo., then to Charlotte, eventually settling in Lenoir, where they raised their three sons. Virginia was active in her community, church, and home; being a Baton Ruritanette member, an active member and teacher at her beloved Colliers United Methodist Church, and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved flowers, gardening, animals of all kinds, enjoyed cooking, and writing and receiving letters from friends and family.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by a son, Mark Terrell Jensen; six brothers, Wayne Barker, Logan Handley, Gail Handley, Bryce Handley, Gene Handley, and Landon Handley; and two sisters, Merle Nelson and Mattie Mae Sim.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 1/2 years, Donald Duane Jensen; two sons, Lyle Jensen (Diana), Brent Jensen (Allison); sister, Mary Margaret Hoag (Ken); four loving grandchildren, Douglas Jensen, Joe Jensen, Amy Jensen Dunlap (Lee), and Landon Jensen; numerous nieces and nephews; their loyal dog, Whitey; and a special member of the family, caregiver and friend Mary Shell.

The family would like to thank Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care of Lenoir for their care, support, and guidance during this difficult time. The family also wishes to thank their friends and family for their thoughts and prayers.

A funeral service honoring Virginia Jensen will be held at 11 on Saturday, Dec. 28, at Colliers United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lori Anne Bowen presiding. Pallbearers will be Douglas Jensen, Joe Jensen, Landon Jensen, Lee Dunlap, Ralph Bryant, and Buddy Davis. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service starting at 10 in the church sanctuary. Interment will follow at a later date in Hamburg, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Caldwell Opportunities Inc., 1617 College Ave. SW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Robert Broach

Robert “Bobby” Wayne Broach, 76, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at his home in Hickory.

Born on Aug. 28, 1937, in Lenoir, he was the son of the late Charles Wesley Broach and Linda Tolbert Quinn. He was the longtime manager of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Winston-Salem. He was also a faithful member of Union Baptist Church in Lenoir.

Mr. Broach was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Carol Ann Broach.

Robert is survived by his son, Bryan Scott Broach of Hickory; his daughter, Jacqueline Elaine Broach of Winston-Salem (Jerry Chostner); three stepdaughters, Tammy Gant, Melissa Smith, and Angie Sports; a brother, Lewis T. Quinn (Alyce); and Uncles Thomas Broach (Margie) of Lenoir, and Ross Tolbert of Palm Springs, Calif.

The family of Mr. Broach will receive friends from 6–8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Union Baptist Church, Lenoir, with the Rev. Myron Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Frank Coffey

Frank Coffey, 71, of Lenoir passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at the Wallace Thompson Hospital in Union, S.C.

Born Sept. 15, 1942, in Avery County, Frank was a son of the late Loyd Vines and Rosie Coffey. He worked many years as a carpenter and also served eight years in the National Guard. He enjoyed racing and will be remembered as being one of a kind. He would do anything he could to help you and loved his family very much. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Vadis Price and Robert Rich, and his stepfather, Leonard Rich.

Survivors include his son, Mikeal Douglas Coffey and wife Barbara of Lenoir; five sisters, Shirley Hollars, Mary Ann Gonzales, Frances Annalee Laws, Roberta Brookshire and Martha Elizabeth Ford; four brothers, Gaither Rich, Leonard Albert Rich Jr., Paul Rich and Johnny Rich; his grandchildren, Mikeal Franklin Coffey, Jacob Dale Coffey and Jaime Danielle Shew; a special friend, Rose Mary Price; he is also survived by numerous other relatives.

A memorial service celebrating Frank’s life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service at 5 p.m. with Pastor Lewis Hollars Jr. and Pastor David Gragg officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3 to 5 p.m.

Warren Clark

Warren Coolidge Clark, 73, of Hickory passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Warren was born on April 12, 1940, in the Spring Creek Community of Madison County. He was the son of the late Raphus L. Clark and Lois Gregory Clark. He was a member of Royal Chapel Church of God. He was a veteran of the United States Army and the Army Reserves. Warren spent his entire business career in the Industrial Supply business and retired as owner of Allied Industrial Supply and Allied Bearings & Supply. He also enjoyed going to Spring Creek, walking at the mall, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Artie Burns Clark, and two brothers, Al Benton Clark and James "Jim” Clark.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, W. Bryson and wife Karen of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, April Clark and husband Matthew Taylor of Icard; two sisters, Ruby C. Marshall and Addie Belle C. Bowman; and three brothers, RL Clark and wife Patricia, Billy Clark and wife Jackie, and Phillip Joe Clark. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Brooke E. Clark and fiancé Jared Ward, Nicholas W. Clark, Mark G. Taylor, Mary E. Taylor; special friend Mozelle Woods; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Royal Chapel Church of God with the Rev. David Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Clark, Carl Herman, Randy Heavner, Van Nance, Greg Whitener, and Dairl Reece. Honorary Pallbearers will be the employees of Allied Industrial Supply and Allied Bearings and Supply.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.

Stephen Poe

Stephen Van Poe, 56, of The Meadows, Boone, passed away Monday evening, Dec. 23, 2013. Stephen was born Aug. 27, 1957, in Watauga County. A loving husband and father, he always enjoyed travel, boating, skiing and golfing with his family. He was very successful as a businessman and entrepreneur. Stephen owned and operated Stephens Auto Mart in Lenoir. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hickory. Surviving are his wife, Denise Miller Poe; his children, Stephanie Poe Durham and husband Robert of Hickory, Christopher Poe of Huntersville, and Brittney Poe of Boone; one step-grandson, Robert Alexander Durham Jr., of Hickory; his parents, Robert and Mary Frank Gragg Poe of Boone; sister, Mari Poe Lesniak and husband Miroslaw of Fayetteville; brother, Robert Bradley Poe of High Point; niece, Lela Lesniak of Fayetteville; sisters-in-law, Diane Fletcher and husband Bob of Cary, Darlene Risk and husband David of Boone, and Dorene Branton and husband Marty of Burnsville; and brother-in-law, Walter Miller and wife Shirley of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Dec. 27, at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Phillip Reynolds.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Entombment will be private.

Edith Virginia Puett Laws, 96, died peacefully on Dec. 24, 2013.

Services will be Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Hudson First Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors and friends Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, 6-8 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.

Imogene Bishop

Imogene Jones Bishop, 73, of Melrose St. SW, Lenoir, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 29, 1939, in Watauga County to the late Ralph W. Jones Sr. and Lela Coffey Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lora Bishop Grimes; three brothers, Franklin Jones, Ralph Jones Jr. and George Sylvester Jones; two sisters, Thelma Payne and Peggy Ann Jones; and grandson Heath Alan Isenhour.

Mrs. Bishop was a homemaker and a member of Crossroads Community Church.

Survivors include her husband, Norval Bishop of the home; one son, Norval Ryan Bishop and wife Carol of Sykesville, Md.; two daughters, Mary Leigh Bishop of Lenoir and Ann Arlene Bishop of Nebo; one brother, Paul Stuart Jones and wife Pat of Lenoir; two grandchildren, Dakota Leigh Bishop, and Stephanie Robinson and husband Donovan; and three great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Crossroads Community Church conducted by Pastor Rick Bowman. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Barry Harper

Barry Glenn Harper, 62, son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Harper and Fannie Dula Harper, entered the Kingdom of God on Dec. 18, 2013.

A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Harper’s United Methodist Church.

Sherry Cooke

Sherry Kay Cooke, 63, of Spoke Lane, Hudson, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. She was born March 7, 1950, in Burke County to Marble Early McCall of Granite Falls and the late Leonard McCall Sr. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Walker.

Mrs. Cooke was a warehouse clerk for Gerresheimer Glass Company and was a member of North Catawba Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to her mother, include her husband, Richard Cooke of the home; one son, Jeffrey Cooke of the home; one daughter, Robin Cooke of Taylorsville; two brothers, Leonard McCall Jr. of Lenoir and James McCall of Morganton; and three grandchildren, Megan Blakemore, Natalie Blakemore and Anthony Blakemore.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Virginia Pyatte

Virginia Lee Hilton Pyatte, 72, of Collettsville entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013.

Mrs. Pyatte was born on Oct. 26, 1941, in Hickory. She was a member of Conway’s Chapel in Lenoir. Her husband, Robert DeWayne Pyatte; her parents, Homer E. Hilton and Inez Teague Hilton; and two sisters preceded her in death.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, Marcie Deyton (Vince), Bryan Sherrill (Waneene), Diane McGee, and Mike Pyatte; grandchildren, Emily, Kristen, Myranda, Rusty, Michelle, and Lisa; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Carolyn Icard, Tommy Hilton, Barbara Edwards, and Betty Graham.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Conway’s Chapel in Lenoir. Inurnment will be private.

James Howell

James Franklin Howell, 75, of Ethan Drive, Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 2, 1938, in Caldwell County to the late Emmanuel M. and Maggie Robinson Howell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Johnny Ray Howell.

Mr. Howell was a retired upholsterer. After retirement he spent many years as a general contractor. He had a zest for life, always happy and never met a stranger.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marion “Dean” Ragan Howell of the home; two daughters, Anita Hennessee and husband Grant of Hickory, and Regina Howell of Moncks Corner, S.C.; three brothers, William “Bill” Howell and Thomas “Gene” Howell, both of Hudson, and Robert “Jake” Howell of Lenoir; and two sisters, Elizabeth “Marie” Wilcox of Hudson and Jessie Bolick of Lenoir.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at 5 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel.

Beulah Warlick

Beulah Triplett Warlick, 78, of Huntington Drive, Hudson, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at Frye Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 2, 1935, in Caldwell County to the late James and Annie Lou Steele Triplett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Louise Triplett and by a son, Joel L. Warlick.

Mrs. Warlick was a bookkeeper for Norman Lambert for 30 years. After retirement she was a substitute teacher for Caldwell County Schools. She was a member of the Masonic Eastern Star. She earned from Lenoir-Rhyne her degree in Business Administration.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Warlick of the home; one daughter, Andrea W. Dugan and husband Tom of Hudson; two brothers, Charlie Triplett and wife Mildred of Lenoir, and Marvin Triplett and wife Mary Jane of Gamewell; two sisters, Mary Sue Drum of Lenoir, and Eula Church and husband Clyde of Hudson; one granddaughter, Amber E. Warlick; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Hudson United Methodist Church conducted by Dr. Timothy Brittain.

Pat Cox

Pat S. Cox, 67, of Lenoir, beloved Pastor’s wife for 47 years, went to be with her Lord and Savior the 26th of December 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center at 2:13 a.m. Born Oct. 27, 1946, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Albert Bob and Hettie Greene Gragg.

Pat was a beloved mother and grandmother who loved her church family and singing in the choir. She was so proud of her boys, and her grandchildren were the love of her life.

Pat was known to be a kind, loving and humble person towards everyone. She stood by her husband as Pastor of Hibriten Baptist Church for 40 years and supported him with prayer and presence. She will be greatly missed by her family and church family.

She is survived by her loving husband, Pastor Douglas Cox of the home; two sons, Paul Douglas Cox and wife Robin of Hudson, and Monty Thomas Cox and wife Lisa of Granite Falls; three sisters, Betty Jean Bristol and husband Lee of Lenoir, Patricia Crotts and husband Gene of Hudson, and Denise Phelps and husband Clayton of Lenoir; five brothers, Roger Gragg and wife Sheila of Hudson, Bob Gragg of Lenoir, Randy Gragg of Lenoir, Rick Gragg and wife Mary Ann of Lenoir, and Paul Gragg of Lenoir; and five grandchildren, Jonathan Douglas Cox, Jordan Paul Cox, Taylor Elizabeth Cox, Andrew “Drew” Thomas Cox and Jacob Darryl Miller.

A celebration of Pat’s life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Hibriten Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Dagenhart and the Rev. Edd Warren officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Zendal Greene, Bud McLean, Steve Icenhour, Bruce Younce, Glenn Winebarger and Jason Rosenberger. Honorary Pallbearers will be Roger Cox Jr., Kevin Cox, Gary Winebarger, Bill Grogran and Joe McMillon.
