Christopher Jerome Corpening, 58, of Lenoir died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at Valdese General Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Corpening was born Jan. 20, 1955, in Caldwell County, a son of the late Clyde Henry and Irene Horton Corpening. He was a former employee in the furniture manufacturing industry.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Marie Powell.
Surviving are his sister and caregiver, Joane Williams of Lenoir, and four brothers, Jerry, Larry and Harold Corpening of Lenoir and Clyde Douglas Corpening of Los Angeles, Calif.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, in the Harpers United Methodist Church, Lenoir, with evangelist Sharon Logan officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. at Harpers United Methodist Church, Lenoir.

Francisco Hernandez-Cruz, 83, of Lenoir passed away Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at his home. Born Sept. 17, 1930, in Aramecina, Valle, Honduras, he was a son of the late Enemecio Hernandez and Diomedes Cruz. He was a livestock trader.
He is survived by his wife, Alba Livida Diaz Hernandez; his daughters, Iris Izaguirre and husband Oscar, Bessy Rodriguez and husband Juan, Dina Majano and husband Wilmer, Livi Hernandez, and Tinita Perez and husband Jorge; four sisters; three brothers; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Laurel Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 1, one our prior to the service.

Thomas E. Watson, 68, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was born in Watauga County on Aug. 8, 1945, to the late Cornelius Roosevelt Watson and Roxy Carroll Watson.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lena Maybell Watson; sons, Timothy George Watson, Joseph Watson; daughter, MayMay Watson; brothers, Floyd Watson and Burly Watson; and sisters, Verlee Goulds, Dollie Steelman, Hollie V. Eller, and Shirley Phillips.
Mr. Watson is survived by his sons, Dinkie Watson and wife Sherry, Pee Wee Watson and wife Christy, Thomas L. Watson and wife Vickie, and Richard Watson and wife Wilma; daughter, Juanita Cole and husband William; grandchildren, Ricky Watson and wife Jessica, Brandon Watson, Terry Watson and wife Melissa, Carrie Watson and husband Junior, Christopher Watson and wife Kim, L. J. Watson, Royce Cole, Jacob Cole, Adam Berry, Ronnie Berry, Anthony Perry, Samuel Perry, and Pojoe Perry; great-grandchildren, Jordan Watson, Michala Watson, Zachary Benge, Zander Benge, Hailey Watson, and Joshua Berry; brothers, Talmage Watson of Warrensville, Teddy Watson of Fleetwood, C.R. Watson of Rutherford College, Martha Gant of Granite Falls, Sue Earp of Wilkesboro, and Ella Lee Stallman of Boomer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Raymond Spann officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 5 p.m., one hour prior to the service.

Gertrude Tolley Murphy, 82, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice &Palliative Care. She was born in Yancey County on June 15, 1931 to the late Malley Tolley and Etta Garland Tolley.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husband, Reece Murphy; brother, Sanders Tolley; sisters, Pauline Adkins, Atlas Adkins and Rosalee Blake; son Dillon Murphy; and great-grandson, Lucas Odell Murphy.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by her son, Odell Murphy; daughters, Edelene Hensley and Madelene Miller; sister, Bernice Murphy; brothers, Forest Tolley and Royce Tolley; grandchildren, Lynn Holder, Robyn Williams, Dustin Murphy, Lisa Douglas, Rick Murphy, Jeff Murphy, Angie Murphy; step-grandchildren, Bambi Austin, Shane Glover, and Travis Glover; 16 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mrs. Murphy’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Kenneth Poarch and Pastor Tony Harris officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Hanibal Maynard (Diddy) Dula, 88, of 1758 Dulatown Road, Lenoir, passed away Dec. 20, 2013, at Gateway Rehabilitation and Health Care. Mr. Dula was born May 14, 1925, in Caldwell County to the late Rev. Monroe Dula and the late Mary Janie Crews Dula.
He was a member of the Dulatown Presbyterian Church, USA, where he was former Clerk of Session, Sunday School Teacher for 55 years, Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. He was retired from the furniture industry where he worked for over 40 years at Bernhardt and Broyhill Furniture companies. His hobbies included baseball, fishing and camping. He was an Army Air Corps Veteran. He was a former President of Caldwell County NAACP, 4 H leader and Dulatown Community Development Inc. member.
In addition to his parents, he was preceeded in death by his son, Larry Maynard Dula; great-granddaughter, Aijia Li Zhae Dula; brothers, Albert Dula, James Bradley Dula, Bryant Dula and Marvin Dula; and sisters, Demetra Norwood, Ruth D. Anderson and Lucy Ann Hood.
Surviving include his wife, Beatrice Mae Love Dula (66 1/2yrs) of the home; daughters, Sonya Anita Hill of Austin, Texas, Deborah O. Walton of New Port News, Va., Sonya D. Bacote (Tommy) of Richmond, Va., and Katie Phillips of Morganton; son, Donald Reginald Dula (Rosa) of Raleigh; daughter, Princess D. Anderson (James) of Morganton; son, Hanibal K. Dula of Lenoir; brothers, Curtis W. Dula (Betty) of Lenoir, and Martin Dula of North Olmstead, Ohio; sister, Veronica Bell of Laurel, Md.; also surviving are 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces also survive.
Funeral services for Hanibal Maynard (Diddy) Dula will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, at Dulatown Presbyterian Church, USA, with the Rev. Rocky Dula officiating. Interment will follow in Dulatown Community Cemetery with military honors.

Jimmie Marian Green, 72, of Freshfield Drive, Hudson, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born March 19, 1941, in Corinth, Fla., to the late Emory and Audrey Lashley Green.
Mr. Green spent a lifetime of service to our communities and country. “Any definition of a successful life must include serving others.” – George Bush. Jim served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, spending 10 years and achieving the rank of Gunnery Sargent. Upon leaving the Marines, he moved to Titusville, Fla., and went to work for Titusville Police Department, retiring in 1993 with 25 years of service. Jim’s service and commitment to Titusville continued in work at Titusville Marina until 2002.
Jim never knew a stranger. A hard working man of integrity, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our world is smaller without his smiling face, wit and humor.
He leaves memories to be cherished by his beloved wife of 42 years, Mrs. Cheryl Cross Green; sons, Michael Green and wife Kim, and Scott Green and wife Jill; sister, Rita Baty; and grandchildren, Sean Green, Skylar Green, Brett Green and Jenna Green.
All services will be private.
