Hazel Coffey

Hazel Rhodes Coffey, 90, of Morganton Boulevard, Lenoir, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at Lenoir Healthcare Center. She was born June 20, 1923, in Caldwell County to the late Bud and Belle Radar Rhodes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Coffey; two sons, Johnny Smith and Freddie Smith; one daughter, Sue Fairchild; and two sisters, Ruth McNeely and Cecile Cannon. Mrs. Coffey was a homemaker and a member of Hartland Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Richard Coffey and Barbara of Hildebran; one daughter, Paula Pennell and husband Lynn of Lenoir; one sister, Fay Throneburg of Morganton; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Hartland Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Steve Parker. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. one hour prior to the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be Shawn Smith, Darren Smith, Keith Coffey, Dale Bennett, Adam Boliek and Colt Pennell.

Allen Finley Jr.

Allen Gordon Finley Jr., 83, of Wilkesboro died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at Wilkes Senior Village.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held Monday 2 p.m., Dec. 30, 2013, at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Benton J. Trawick officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. A private burial will be held prior to the service at Scenic Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Finley was born in Wilkes County on June 16, 1930, to Allen Gordon Finley Sr. and Annie May Barnes Finley. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Finley was an Eagle Scout in Troop 36 and a scoutmaster for Troop 336. He was also a volunteer firefighter for North Wilkesboro for 35 years. He was a member of Y’s Men's Club and former president of the Home Builders’ Association. After retiring from home construction and real estate, Mr. Finley became a Presbyterian Lay Minister. He served as pastor for Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church from 2002 until 2007. Mr. Finley was an elder, choir member and Sunday school teacher at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years and was the founding member of Gideons International Wilkes North Camp. He was active in Habitat for Humanity, served on mission trips to Mexico and was an avid tennis player. He was a member of the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient.

Mr. Finley was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Elmore Finley and Katherine Finley Blatt; and a grandson, Cameron Finley.

Mr. Finley is survived by his wife, Carolina Ferguson Finley of the home; four daughters, Katie Finley Smithey of Wilkesboro, Kendal Finley Privette and Chris of North Wilkesboro, Carol Kyles Finley and Vince Foote of Raleigh, and Mary Rebecca Finley of Wilkesboro; two sons, Allen Gordon Finley III and Jackie of Hickory, and Thomas Cameron Finley and Tammy of Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Madeline Finley, Tate Finley, Blair Finley, Parks Smithey, Abby Smithey, Hank Privette, Jack Privette, Zoe Foote, Zane Foote, and Kyle Barger.

Everett Haney

Everett Eugene Haney, 78, of Lenoir passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born April 14, 1935, in Mitchell County, Mr. Haney was a son of the late William Clifford and Rosa Peterson Haney and the husband of the late Nelda Lou Thompson Haney.

Other than his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Haney; one sister, Zena Haney Price; and two brothers, Paul Haney and Jim Haney.

He is survived by two sons, Cleland Haney and wife Pat of Linville, and Claude Haney of Knoxville, Tenn.; five sisters, Doris Morgan and husband Terry of Gamewell, Rita Barger of Hickory, Louise Messer of Gamewell, Zula Robbins of Gamewell, Reba Green of Granite Falls; one brother, Vaughn Haney of Gamewell; two grandchildren, Brandi Haney and Paige Haney; and many other relatives,    close neighbors and friends.

A celebration of Mr. Haney’s life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Tabernacle Advent Christian Church with the Rev. Frank Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Kendrick Jenkins

Kendrick “Henry” Jeneil Jenkins, 33, of Wierton, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013. The funeral will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home, with visitation from 11 a.m.-noon.

Dylan Short

Dylan Joseph Short, 20, of Lenoir died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Verna Tapman

Verna Ward Tapman, 92, of Baltimore, Md., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.

Born Aug. 8, 1921, in Baltimore, Md., Verna was the daughter of the late William and Marion Ward Fogle.

Verna worked at Bethlehem Steel before her marriage in the payroll department and as a dietary aide at Perring Parkway Nursing Home in her later years. She enjoyed reading and gardening.She also had a love for her dogs and cats.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brent Tapman. Survivors include her three daughters, Joyce Tapman of Baltimore, Joanne Crunkleton and husband Gerald of Hudson, and Linda Tapman and fiancé Dominick Brusca of Parkville, Md.; two grandchildren, Kevin Crunkleton and wife Wendy of Hudson, and Allyson Powell and husband Nathan of Gastonia. She is also survived by five great grandchildren. A celebration of Verna’s life will be held on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Home in Parkville, Md., at 11 a.m. Interment will follow the service in the Parkwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Evans Funeral Home in Parkville, Md., on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Ralph Annas

Ralph Andrew Annas, 81, of Hudson passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Mr. Annas was born in Caldwell County on Feb. 12, 1932, to Ira Asbury Annas and Kita Eller Annas. Mr. Annas was a longtime employee of Kincaid Furniture Company in Hudson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Drye of Mooresville.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 61 years, Loretta Smith Annas; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Lynne Mast and husband Larry of Patterson; and a sister, Wilma Hester.

The family will receive friends at Evans Funeral Service on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, from 10 to 11 a.m. A private service will be held at a later time.

Roger Raymond Fox, 68, of Lenoir died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013.

Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. The family will receive friends Sunday 1-2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.
