Patsy Ruth Barlowe Curtis, 78, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born April 25, 1935, in Caldwell County, Mrs. Curtis was a daughter of the late Grady Abraham and Ruth Tuttle Barlowe and the wife of Mr. Nicholas Maxwell Curtis of the home.
Mrs. Curtis was an amazing Mother and Mentor to all her family. She gave meaning to the word Grace. She loved Norman Rockwell paintings and cherished teaching the compassion of those moments he painted. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lenoir.
Surviving other than her husband are her daughter, Jana Elizabeth Curtis; grandchildren, Savannah Caroline Curtis, Nicholas Christopher Wilson, and Olivia Rose Wilson; and two brothers, Robert and Maurice Barlowe.
A service remembering the life of Patsy Ruth Barlowe Curtis will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 12 until 2 prior to the service Saturday at United Presbyterian Church.
Pallbearers will be: Devan Barlowe, Michael Isenhour, Michael Camp, Gunner Marcus, Chris Barlowe and Cody Smith.

Donald Brown, 58, of Connelly Springs died Wednesday Jan. 1, 2014.

Jay F. Allen, 83, of Lenoir passed away on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
Born March 2, 1930, in Caldwell County, Jay was a son of the late Lloyd and Inez Taylor Allen. Jay was a member of the Central Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher. He served as a medic in the United States Army and served in Germany. Jay enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and liked to invent things. He was a co-owner of the House of Arts & Crafts here in Lenoir. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Keith Allen and a brother, Ray Allen.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Toye Allen of the Home; a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn Allen Sullivan and husband James “Jim”of Hudson; a sister, Faye McMillan of Columbia, S.C.; and seven grandchildren, James C. Sullivan III and wife Jaime of Gastonia, Joseph Andrew Sullivan and wife Judith of Williamsburg, Va., Dr. Anna Marie Overby and husband Nicholas of Holly Springs, John Paul Sullivan and wife Deidre of Reidsville, Roxy Rinehardt and husband Jeremy of Hickory, Sierra Layhew and husband Phillip of Hickory, and Elizabeth Allen of Roan Mountain, Tenn. Jay is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
A celebration of Jay’s life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor John Jernigan officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Hazel Bolick Lipe Stephenson, 87, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, in Hickory. Hazel was born May 14, 1926, in Caldwell County to Marion A. Bolick and Ollie Curtis Bolick. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Jim Lipe and Earl Stephenson; and two sisters, Gladys Bolick Smith and Sarah Bolick Watson.
Survivors include two brothers, Dr. Gerald Bolick of Happy Valley, and Tom Bolick and wife Patricia of Hudson; nieces Joan Watson Huffman and husband Lanny of Hickory, and Lori Bolick Taylor and husband Steve of Happy Valley; nephews, Marc Watson of Lenoir, Tom Bolick Jr. and wife Amy of Atlanta, and Robb Bolick and wife Karen of Hudson; four grandnieces; six grandnephews; and one great-grandnephew.
Mrs. Stephenson received degrees from Mars Hill Women’s College (now UNC Greensboro) and Appalachian State University. She taught home economics at Lenoir High School for 20 years in the 1940s – 1960s, taught at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, and was a Caldwell County Home Demonstration Agent. She was on the founding Board of Trustees for the Caldwell Senior Center. After retirement, she worked part-time for the News-Topic. Hazel was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir.
The family of Mrs. Stephenson will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, from 6–8 PM. The funeral service for Mrs. Stephenson will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Lenoir with Dr. David Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Marc Watson, Tom Bolick Jr., Robb Bolick, Daniel Taylor, Tom Bolick III, and Jarod Bolick. James “Elgie” Davis, 98, of Lenoir died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born June 7, 1915, in Caldwell County to the late Roy Asbury and Zora “Annie” Courtney Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Davis, and four sisters, Ethel Cooke, Irene Hawkins, Dorothy Teague and Jewel McCreary.
Mr. Davis was retired from the furniture industry. He was a charter member of Fairview Presbyterian Church. He was also a United States Navy Veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hazel Brookshire Davis of the home; four sons, Jim D. Davis and wife Mary of Lenoir, Bruce Davis and wife Delbra of Charlotte, John Davis and wife Diane, and Mike Davis and wife Christl, both of Lenoir; one sister, Annie Herman of Hickory; half-brother, Ronnie Glenn; grandchildren, Jamie Davis, Kristen Creel and husband David, Rob Davis and wife Katie, Amy Smith and husband Chris, Brooke Davis, Curtis Gaines and Lindsey Davis; great-grandchildren, D. J. Hall, Steven Sabat, Harrison, Audrey and Caroline Smith and Elizabeth Davis.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Marietta Smith. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
