Carolyn Bessie Hamby Lail, 72, of Granite Falls passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Trinity Village in Hickory.
Born Aug. 15, 1941, in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas G. Hamby and Mary Hart Hamby. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Gwinn Lail.
Mrs. Lail was a member of Dudley Shoals Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheliah Lail Wurth and husband Brian of Granite Falls; two sons, Michael Lail and wife Ann of Hudson, and Dana Lail and wife Judy of Granite Falls; five sisters, Kathy Hall of Lenoir, Nancy Simmons of Granite Falls, Linda Austin of Lenoir, Janet Hill of Bethlehem, and Becky Hollar of Lenoir; two brothers, George Hamby of Hudson, and David Hamby of Summerville, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Shea Lail, Ariel Smith, Destiny Wurth, Michael Lail Jr., Nick Clark, Jordan Clark, Amanda Hingson Retana, and Joshua Miller; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2014, 3 p.m. at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Ingle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church prior to the service.

Barbara Knight Whisenant of Westbrook Street, Lenoir, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Valdese Hospital. She was born in Caldwell County to the late Dora Bryant Knight. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lankie L. Whisenant Sr.; son, Lankie L. Whisenant Jr.; and sisters, Georgia Younce, Myrtle Younce and Eletha Waters.
Mrs. Whisenant was a secretary for John’s Precision Auto Body in Marion and was a member of Gamewell United Methodist Church. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Leonard Whisenant and wife Anita of Wilmington, and Claude Richard Whisenant and wife Julia of Mills River; two daughters, Charlene Warhurst of Marion, and Cynthia Lee Mashburn and husband John of Marion; one sister, Mavis Knight Allred of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Dora Lynn Clark of Hickory, Cynthia Ann Cannon of Granite Falls, Troy Chester Warhurst Jr. of Lenoir, Katherine Marie Whisenant of Wilmington, Michael James Mashburn and Aaron Lee Mashburn, both of Marion, and Wesley Daniel Whisenant, Zachary Joseph Whisenant and Luke Andrew Whisenant, all of Mills River; special friend Doug Metz of Hickory; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by grandson Wesley D. Whisenant and other family members. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be co-workers from John’s Precision Auto Body.

Ruth Elizabeth Curlee Craig, 93, of Sweetbriar Circle, Lenoir, died Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care-Hudson. She was born July 30, 1920, in Caldwell County to the late Scott and Mittie McGalliard Curlee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Spencer “Spank” Craig, who passed away in 1976; one son, S. Douglas Craig; three sisters, Nell Queen, Helen Eller and Jessie Faye Jaynes; two brothers, Clyde Curlee and infant “Little Scott” Curlee; two half-sisters, Ellie Crisp and Mary Palmer; and one half-brother, Frie Torrence.
Mrs. Craig was a homemaker and a member of Central Advent Christian Church. Ruth’s father operated a grocery store on Virginia Street called “Curlee Store.” After the retirement of their parents, Ruth and her sister, Nell, operated the store for many years. Ruth was a “people-person,” never meeting a stranger or anyone she didn’t like. She loved working in her flowers and was proud of receiving the “Lenoir Yard of the Month” award.
Survivors include one daughter, Mitzi Richards; one son-in-law, Bruce Richards; one daughter-in-law, Marjie Craig; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Richards and wife Syretha, Angela Ellis and husband Benjamin, and Pamela Craig Miller; six great-grandchildren, Andrew Berry and wife Caroline, Jessica Berry, Jonathan Richards, Benjamin Miller, Chelsie Ellis and Logan Ellis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Ed Neal and the Rev. Marshall Tidwell.
