Clarence Cartner

Clarence Thomas Cartner, 61, passed away on July 17, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice. He was born in Statesville on Oct. 21, 1952, to the late Harold Caldwell Cartner Sr. and Edith Beck Cartner.

Clarence worked for Flowers Bakery and was a master carpenter. He graduated from West Rowan High School.

He is survived by the love of his life, Diane Small; son, Michael Cartner; stepchildren, Crystal Small, and Brent Small and wife Nikki; brothers, Harold Cartner and wife Debi, Bob Cartner and wife Pam, and Dana Cartner; in-laws, Jewel and David Land; eight grandchildren; and a very special aunt, Tronia Gibson.

A celebration of Clarence’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Josh Wallace officiating. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie McIntyre, Bob Cartner, Eddie Land, Dana Cartner, John Land, David Land and Steve Myers.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 prior to the service.

Terry Sanders

Terry Franklin Sanders, 67, of Lenoir passed away at his residence on Thursday, July 17, 2014.

Mr. Sanders was born on May 30, 1947, in Caldwell County to the late Banner Franklin Sanders and Mildred Ruth Hicks Sanders. Mr. Sanders was a member of Whitnel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Terry was a loving and devoted husband. He was an encouragement to those who knew him, and his family and friends were always blessed to be around him.

Those left to cherish the memory of Mr.Sanders include his wife of 33 years, Joanie Causby Sanders of the home; a son, Matthew Franklin Sanders and wife Megan Elizabeth of Stony Point; a daughter, Christie Sanders of Granite Falls; four grandchildren, Cayden Sanders, Alliyah Basden, Chandler Brady, and Sydney Sanders; three brothers, Larry Sanders of Hickory, Danny Sanders of Shelby, and Jack Sanders of Lenoir; and two sisters, Doris Warren of Lenoir and Kay Chapman of Gamewell.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family of Terry Sanders will receive friends on Sunday, July 20, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. Sanders will be Monday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Keith Gilliam and the Rev. Tony Goins officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Euel Estep

Euel W. Estep, 89, of Hudson went home to be with his Lord on July 17, 2014.

Born on July 31, 1924, in Big Ugly, W.Va., he was the son of the late Herston and Minnie Duty Estep. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Euel loved to sing bluegrass gospel and was a member of Crossroads Trio. He retired from Chapmanville High School after 17 years, and was loved by all the kids at the school. Euel was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WWII. At his nursing home he was known as the best dressed resident as he had an outfit for every occasion/holiday.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Frances Estep; children, Linda Clanton of Cleveland, Tenn., Indialyne Pinto and husband Ray of Titusville, Fla., Connie Ketter and husband Gene of Gallatin, Tenn., Joe Estep and wife Cindy of Charlotte, and Sarah Stafford and husband Jimmy of Hudson; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of his Life will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Catawba Funerals & Cremations with the Rev. Jeff Burkhimer officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carolyn Handy

Carolyn Allen Handy, 75, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, as result of an auto accident. Born Sept. 4, 1938, in Ashe County, she was a daughter of the late Tway and Mary Osborne Allen and the wife of the late Guy Handy.

Mrs. Handy was a member of The Lenoir Wesleyan Church. She was a seamstress, an avid reader and loved gardening. She helped raise many children over the years with her in home day care, to most she will be remembered as “Maw Maw.” In most recent years she worked as a sales associate at Medical Arts Pharmacy in Lenoir.

Other than her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Sabrina Faith Handy; grandson, Dillon Mitchell; great-grandson, Carson William Handy; and two brothers, Robert Leslie Allen and Harold Dean Allen.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Mitchell of Morganton; her brother, Ernie Allen and wife Regina of Lenoir; one grandson, Anthony Frasca of Morganton; and her “adopted daughter,” Revonda Oliver.

A celebration of Mrs. Handy’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 20, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with the Rev. James Baker officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:30 until 3:15 p.m. prior to the service.

Sabrina Handy

Sabrina Faith Handy, 29, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, as result of an auto accident. Born Feb. 8, 1985, in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of Rhonda Mitchell of Morganton and Bert Tracy Keller of Lenoir.

Sabrina was a 2003 graduate of Hibriten High School and had worked as a CNA. She enjoyed spending time watching a good movie and spending time with friends.

She is preceded in death by her son, Carson William Handy; her grandmother, Carolyn Handy; grandfather, Guy Handy; and a brother, Dillon Mitchell.

Other than her parents, she is survived by a brother, Anthony Frasca of Morganton.

A celebration of Sabrina’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 20, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with the Rev. James Baker officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:30 until 3:15 p.m. prior to the service.

Carson Handy

Carson William Handy, 4, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, as result of an auto accident. Born April 26, 2010, in Caldwell County, he was the son of the late Sabrina Faith Handy and Jesse Lee Blann of Morganton.

Carson attended Head Start and loved playing with robots as well as mowing the lawn with his toy lawn mower.

Other than his mother, he is preceded in death by his “Maw Maw,” Carolyn Handy; his maternal great-grandfather, Guy Handy; and uncle, Dillon Mitchell.

Other than his father, he is survived by his brother, Anton Blann; maternal grandmother, Rhonda Mitchell of Morganton; maternal grandfather, Bert Tracy Keller of Lenoir; his paternal grandparents, Lee and Janet Blann of Morganton; and his uncle, Anthony Frasca of Morganton. He is also survived by his two pets, Daisy and Roxie.

Ernest Timothy McGill, 67, of Morganton died July 16, 2014. Funeral will be 2 p.m., Monday, July 21, 2014, in Fleming Memorial Chapel at Ebony Funeral Services of Morganton. The family will receive friends from 1–1:55 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow.

Thomas Shukis

Thomas Lee Shukis, 71, of Norwood Street, Lenoir, died Friday, July 18, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. He was born July 9, 1943, in Aurora, Illinois, to the late John and Doris Murray Shukis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie S. Monsin.

Mr. Shukis worked at Lenoir Pad and Paper and in maintenance for real estate. He also umpired for the City of Lenoir, many Christian schools and played fast pitch ball.

Survivors include two sons, Joshua M. Shukis of Lenoir and Andrew Shukis of Boone; one daughter, Roberta Lee Edmisten and husband John of Boone; two brothers, Gary J. Shukis of Lenoir and Chuck Shukis of Alabama; and two sisters, Pearl S. Blackwell of Granite Falls and Tammy S. Bourgeois of Alabama.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at 6 p.m. at Mountain Grove Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Clifton Black and the Rev. Ed Warren. Interment will follow at Sunrise Baptist Church Cemetery.

Billy Helms Jr.

Billy Eugene Helms Jr., 56, of Lenoir passed away Friday, July 18, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir. Born Sept. 16, 1957, in Dover, Delaware, Billy was a son of the late Billy Eugene Helms Sr. and the late Betty Elizabeth Furr Helms.

Billy enjoyed old cars, shooting pool and karaoke.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Helms, of the home; special uncle, William Fortune of Morganton; special friend and caregiver, Ray; and his very special buddies, Willie, Little Girl, Smooches, Lillie, Badger, Poppy, Buffy and Mo Mo.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Lillian Clark

Lillian Bruner Clark passed away Friday, July 18, 2014, at Grandview Villa Assisted Living after an extended period of declining health. Born in McDowell County on March 16, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John Larkin Bruner and Eliza Lewis Bruner. She loved her family and friends and genuinely sought the best in other people. Prior to her illness, she was an active member of College Avenue Baptist Church in Lenoir.

Mrs. Clark and her late husband, Walter Perman Clark, formerly operated Clark’s Barbeque Drive-In locally, as well as Abernathy Apartments.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Mildred Bruner and Myrtle Bruner Lewis and brothers John Bruner, Lee Bruner, Joe Bruner, Floyd Bruner and Roy Bruner. She is survived by a sister, Autumn Gibbs of Marion; a grandson, Mark Persinger of Hudson; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Prior to her illness, she was an active member of College Avenue Baptist Church in Lenoir. Her family wishes to particularly express their appreciation for the gentle and considerate care she received from the staff at Grandview Villa Assisted Living.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life with a graveside service led by the Rev. Chuck Brawley on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Whitnel Cemetery.

Glenda Walsh

Glenda Aldridge Walsh, 64, of Lenoir went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, July 18, 2014. Born Jan. 1, 1950, in Los Angeles, Calif., she was a daughter of the late Glen Aldridge and Alma Coleen Greene and the wife of Carl “Buddy” Walsh, to whom she had been married for 43 years.

Glenda loved her family and her Lord. She was a member of Hartland Missionary Methodist Church. She was well-known for her wedding cakes, flowers and her enjoyment of making ceramics.

Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Roger Greene.

Surviving other than her husband are her three children, Dustin Greene and wife Susan, Jadina Beaver and husband Tony, and Danyelle Walsh, all of Lenoir; and two sisters, Drena Adams and husband Wiley, and Renee Triplett and husband Boyd, all of Lenoir. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Veronica, Phoebe, Rhiannon, Kylee, Dillon, Kayla, Drema and Shadow; and one great-grandchild, Butterfly.

A celebration of Mrs. Walsh’s life will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Bill Bentley officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service.

Tillman Houck

Tillman Dewey Houck, 87, of Kincaid Place, Lenoir, died Friday, July 18, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care - Hudson. He was born Jan. 28, 1927, in Lee County, South Carolina, to the late Grover and Josie Fields Houck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant children.

Mr. Houck was retired from the furniture industry, was a member of Flemings Chapel Baptist Church and was an avid fan of auto racing.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marie G. Houck of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Anne H. Curtis and husband Steve of Lenoir; two brothers, Robert J. Houck and Willie F. Houck, both of Lenoir; one sister, Ethel H. Morris of Morganton; grandchildren, Josh Curtis and wife Aura, and Jonathan Curtis and wife Adri Anne; and “special grandson” Daegan Guy and his mother, Hope Cook.

The family will receive friends Monday, July 21, 2014, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Flemings Chapel Baptist Church. A graveside service will follow in the church cemetery conducted by the Rev. Eric Kincaid.
