Mamie Jones

Mamie Agnes Jones, 87, of Lenoir passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at her residence.

Miss Jones was born in Caldwell County to the late Boaz Jones and Evelie Witherspoon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George B. Jones, Ross Lee Jones and Dewey D. Jones; and half-brothers, William, Otis and K. C. Jones.

Miss Jones was a very private and proud person. She loved to talk on the phone to her family and friends, and was a caregiver to her brothers. She loved the Lord and her family.

Those left to cherish her memory are a half-sister, Joyce Lipford, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, March 17, in Pendry’s Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jimmy Norwood officiating. Burial will follow at the Jones Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday.

Serving as pallbearers will be nephews and cousins of Miss Jones.

Richard Sain

Richard Thomas “Coach” Sain, 81, of Elcaney Drive, Hudson, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Shaire Center. He was born Nov. 22, 1931, in Catawba County to the late Sanford Sain and Zona Stephens Sain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Jack, Paul and Alvin Sain; and one sister, Martha Anderson.

Richard was a loving, caring family man who enjoyed including children and grandchildren in his vacations. He loved to fish, to attend sports events, to travel and to vacation at the beach and in the mountains.

Mr. Sain was a devoted history teacher and coach for 43 years. Many people fondly remember him as “Coach Sain.” He worked at Hudson High School, Grandview Junior High School in Hickory and retired from Hudson Middle School. He enjoyed coaching football and track, having many successful teams and good athletes.

He graduated from Hickory High School, Lenoir-Rhyne University, attending on a football scholarship, and earned a master’s degree from Appalachian State University. He served in the United States Army for two years. He was also an active member of the Hudson United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served on many committees.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Miriam Haas Sain of Hudson; one daughter, Emily Mabe and husband Garon of Lenoir; one son, Richard Murl Sain and wife Chrystal of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Thomas Mabe, Evie Mabe, Patricia and Zoie Sain; brother, Herman Sain and wife Verna of Knoxville, Tenn., sisters-in-law, Virginia Sain of Hickory, and Beth Haas of Hudson; brother-in-law Tom Haas and wife Alice of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at Hudson United Methodist Church conducted by Dr. Timothy Brittain. Interment will follow at Hickman Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Thomas Mabe, David Haas, David Emmett, Gary Sain, Ron Sain and Stephen Sain.

Honarary pallbearers will be: Garon Mabe, Skip Downs, Peter Loyzelle and George Bristol.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hudson United Methodist Church “Refurbishing Fund,” 383 Main St., Hudson, N.C. 28638, or Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, N.C. 28645.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the Shaire Center staff for their loving concern and wonderful care. Also, an appreciation to the staff of Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.

Jason Miller

Jason Lindy Miller, 38, of Hickory died March 13, 2013, at his residence. Born April 23, 1974, in Catawba County, he was the son of Alvin Ray Miller and stepmother Sherry Miller, and of Linda Houston Perry and stepfather Lonnie E. Perry. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alvin Lindy Miller and Ruby Pruitt Miller, and Foy Marshall and Elsie Centers Houston.

A loving father, son and brother, and a good friend to many, he is survived by one son, Devan Gage Miller of the home, and one daughter, Oma Gallagher of Hickory. His brothers, Kenneth Ray Miller and wife Jennifer of Lenoir, Jeffrey Brian Miller and wife Carolyn of Kannapolis, and Mark Miller of Hickory, and sister, Michelle Miller of Hickory, are left to cherish his memory. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, and the family of Sherrill Furniture, where he was employed for over 10 years.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, at Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Hickory. The Rev. Larry Cooley will officiate, and burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory.

Rodney Houston Jr., Justin Roberts, Jeff Jenkins, Jason Holland, Walter Garcia, Travis Hairston, Tanner Sittig and Dion Hines will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 15, from 7-9 p.m. at Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Hickory.
