Deloris Mullinax Barrett, 62, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at her residence. She was born in Caldwell County on Sept. 23, 1950, to the late Massie Taylor Mullinax Jr. and Louise Raby Mullinax.

Deloris was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a cancer survivor and a member of the New Horizons Group.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Erin Barrett; nephew, Bradley Anderson Goforth; and great-nephew, Levi Dalson Mullinax.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Colene Price Crane; brother, Dennis Mullinax and wife Judy; brother, Lynn Mullinax and wife Linda; sister, Rita Reece and husband Joel; sister, Rebecca Bentley; sister, Regina Goforth and husband Michael; grandchildren, Timothy Price, Landon Price, Elizabeth Price, Sahvanna Corolla, Anthony Corolla; and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Deloris’ life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Friday, March 29, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Rodney Raby officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Robert Mullinax Jr., Johnny White, Russell Price, Joshua Bentley, Lucas Bentley, and Jordan Mullinax.

The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Garland Laxton (has photo)

Garland Homer Laxton, 84, of Grandin Road, Lenoir, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Caldwell County to the late Clyde Homer and Ola Pennell Laxton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son Ricky Laxton; daughter Debbie Laxton; and three sisters, Gwendolyn Coffey, Betty Sue Laxton and Margaret Hartley.

Mr. Laxton was a retired furniture worker and was a member of Kings Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Laney Laxton of the home; one brother, Douglas Laxton and wife Joanne of Hudson; brother-in-law, Bill Laney and wife Juanita of Lenoir; and sister-in-law, Sue Jaynes and husband Richard of Lenoir.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 30, at 4 p.m. at Kings Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Randy Goode and the Rev. Gary Waters. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Dorothy Jackson

Dorothy Christine Jackson, 84, of Hickory, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Burial will take place in Maury City, Tenn., at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

Vernon Gordon Burgin, 76, of Hudson passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, in Houston, Texas.

Born May 23, 1936, he was the son of the late Merritt Vernon Burgin and Mable Baily Burgin.

Mr. Burgin was a member of Clover Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Goble Burgin of the home; two daughters, Deborah Burgin Stevens of South Carolina, and Lisa Shaw of Granite Falls; one son, Dwayne Burgin of Granite Falls; four sisters, Anita Burgin Gilliland of Hudson, Mary Lynn of Hickory, Carol Hargus of Hickory, and Tanya Burgin Floyd of Charlotte; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 29, 1 p.m. at Bass-Smith Granite Chapel with the Rev. Keith Childers and the Rev. David Locke officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, March 29, from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service at Bass-Smith Granite.

Wanda Absher

Wanda Lee Absher, 63, of Lenoir passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Ms. Absher was born in Wilkes County to the late Dewey Pedroe Absher and Bertha Isadoe Handy Absher. She was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Mack, Cecil, Johnnie, Lydda and Dewey Absher, and her sisters, Eve Teague, Ozzie Adams, Cora Lee Setzer, Josephine Adams and Betty Jo Adkins.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Shannon Woods and Sharon Whittington, both of Lenoir; her grandchildren, Karen Williams, Jesse Woods and Devin Whittington, all of Lenoir; her great-grandchildren, Mason Williams and Raelynn Sanders.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 30, at 4 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with Chaplain Steve Butler and Ed Richards officiating. Burial will follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home on Friday, March 29, from 6 to 8 pm.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Adams, Matthew Smith, Jason Greene, Keith Cardwell, Tim Wallace and Eddie Wallace. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Absher and Stevie Greene.
