Terry Hicks

Terry William Hicks, 42, of Lenoir passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at his home. Born Aug. 22, 1971, in Caldwell County, Terry was the son of Mattie Spears of Lenoir and Jerry William Hicks of Granite Falls.

He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandfather, Lonnie Hartley, and Paternal Grandparents, Conley and Laura Hicks.

Terry enjoyed riding dirt bikes, loved fast cars and was an auto mechanic. He had attended Caldwell Community College in the Mechanic’s Program.

Other than his parents, he is survived by his three children, Trevor Hicks, Nikki Hicks and Rachel Hicks, all of Hudson; the mother of his children, Annette Hicks Winkler; his maternal Grandmother, Ruby Kincaid Hartley of Lenoir; one brother, Jerry Junior Hicks and wife Dana Michelle of Lenoir; two sisters, Teresa H. Trivette of Lenoir, and Linda Boykin of Hickory; and his nieces and nephews, Brittany, Ethan, Dreama, Tyler, Brandon and great-nephew, Decklyn. He is also survived by several Aunts, Uncles and other relatives.

The family received friends on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, from 5 until 6:30 p.m. at Evans Funeral Service.

Annie Severt

Annie Bell Severt, 88, of Severt Circle, Lenoir, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at the residence. She was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Caldwell County to the late Horrace and Lillie Greene McGarr. In addition to her parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Mrs. Severt was retired from the furniture industry and attended Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Earnest Paul Severt Jr. of the home; two sons, Earnest Paul Severt Jr. and wife Margie of Lenoir, and Everett Claude Severt of the home; two daughters, Sandra Joyce Tolbert and husband Kenneth, and Glenda Marlene Everhart; two sisters, Virginia Craig and Barbara Lowman, both of Lenoir; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gerald Bentley. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Billy Paisley, Richard Severt, Matt Woods, Jesse Buff, Freddy Summerlin and John Bish.

Newton Gentry Sr.

Newton Clay Gentry Sr., 88, of Granite Falls died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at his son’s residence. He was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee to the late Stacy Gentry Sr. and Maedell Fritz Gentry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Bryant Gentry; two brothers, Clifton Gentry and Stacy Gentry Jr.; and two sisters, Louise Baker and Jean Rivers.

Mr. Gentry was a self-employed home builder and was a United States World War II Navy Veteran. He was a member of Lenoir Community Church, where he served as an Elder.

Survivors include two sons, Newton Clay Gentry II and wife Kathy, and Richard Marcus Gentry and wife Laura; brothers, Aaron Gentry of Severn, and Eddie Ray Gentry of Clemmons; sister, Glaidous Oliver of Lenoir; and grandchildren, Alicia G. Hunt and husband Jerry, Stacey Gentry, Colby Gentry and Brittnee Gentry.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Lenoir Community Church conducted by Pastor Daniel McGee. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Harry Farley

Harry Lee Farley, 72, of Stone Creek Court, Lenoir, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at his residence. He was born July 8, 1941, in Graham County to the late John and Erma Anderson Farley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Crystal Moore.

Mr. Farley was a computer technician at Robinson Hosiery and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kirby Farley of the home; one son, Michael Ray Farley of Spruce Pine; two daughters, Melanie Goble and husband Danny, and Erma Whisnant and husband Robert, all of Lenoir; three stepdaughters, Marsha Busha and husband Dustin, and Kimberly Vines, all of Lenoir, and Sharon Benfield and husband Gary of Conover; one brother, Keith Farley and wife Linda of Shelby; four sisters, Eunice Steinbarger and husband Jim of Forest City, Ark., Carol O’Neil and husband Larry of Summerville, S.C., Dorothy Williams and husband Leonard of Robbinsville, and Janet Ollis and husband Sam of Sawmills; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel.

Viola Hall

Viola Hall, 97, of Lenoir passed away, Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Nolan Miller

Nolan Earl Miller, 80, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice. Born in Caldwell County on Oct. 27, 1933, he was the son of the late Earl Boyd Miller and Cora Lee Miller.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Shuffler Miller; son, Jerry Miller; brother, Bobby Miller; sister, Willa Jean Carpenter; and stepsons, Mike Pritchard and Dennis Pritchard.

He is survived by his sons, Reggie Miller and wife Rhonda Shepard, Terry Miller and wife Cathy Mullen, Keith Miller and wife Julia Miller; stepdaughter, Margie Tolbert and husband Reggie Wallace; brothers, Thomas Miller and wife Reba, and Basil Miller and wife Karen; sisters, Mary Spicer, Margaret Evans, and Frances Carpenter; brother-in-law, John Carpenter; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mr. Miller’s life will be held at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Burkimer and Pastor Glen Walker officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be TJ Miller, Robert Miller, David Evans, Reggie Wallace, Curtis Webb, and Larry Carpenter. Robert Cline II will serve as Honorary Pallbearer.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 prior to the service.

Mary Rhodes

Mary Pope Rhodes passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Springs of Catawba.

Born Dec. 6, 1926, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Arnold W. and Velma Bernice Brown Pope.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Henry Rhodes Sr.; stepdaughter, Nancy Rhodes Smart; three brothers, Edward Ransom Pope, Joe Arnold Pope, and Clyde Bruce Pope; and a sister, Mildred Louise Pope Lappin.

She is survived by two sons, Jacob H. Rhodes Jr. (Geneva) of Lenoir, and David Pope Rhodes (Debbie) of Waco, Texas; a sister, Shirley Ann Pope Little of Hickory; two grandchildren, Sara Rhodes Kunkel and Derick Lynn Rhodes; six step-grandchildren: Cheryl Bolt, Chris Oakley, Terrie Whisnant Ishie, Sandy Whisnant Berry, Scott Whisnant, and Johnnie Lee Smart; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Randall Cauble officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2–3 p.m. at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Senior Friends Group of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church and the Fairbrook Fire Department.

Douglas Clippard

Douglas C. Clippard, 67, of Lenoir died Feb. 12, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born May 3, 1946, in Ashe County to Danish Lewis Clippard of Granite Falls and the late Russell E. Clippard.

Mr. Clippard was retired from Broyhill Furniture after 48 years of service. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, where he served as a past Sunday school superintendent. He was a former member of Kings Creek Ruritan and served as secretary for eight years. He also served as a board member of Kings Creek Fire Department for 15 years.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his loving wife of 48 years, Mrs. Jean Prestwood Clippard of the home; one son, Stephen Clippard of Lenoir; one daughter, Mrs. Amanda Pennington and husband Mike of Lenoir; one brother, Walter Clippard and wife Mary of Lenoir; two sisters, Sally Anderson and husband Arvil of North Wilkesboro, and Martha Pitts and husband Keith of Lenoir; mother and father-in-law, James and Virginia Prestwood of Lenoir; and two brothers-in-law, Ronnie Prestwood and Richard Prestwood.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Julie Roberts and the Rev. Danny Wright. Interment will follow at Mount Zion United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Carl Beane, Dwight Joplin, Mike Hatton, Steve Hollar, the Rev. Jack Lewis and Mitchell Mikeal Jr.
