Marjorie Bumgarner

Marjorie Lee Bumgarner, 84, of Granite Falls passed away Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care of Hudson.

Born Jan. 18, 1930, in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margrette Hopkins Maltba. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Bumgarner.

Marjorie was a member of Clover Baptist Church.

Survivors include three brothers, Ray Maltba and his wife, Barbara, of Taylorsville, Bill Maltba and his wife, June, of Hudson, and Melvin Maltba of Lenoir. Also surviving are six nephews and three nieces.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Clover Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Childers officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to services from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Terry Blackburn

Terry Lynette Blackburn, 52, our special little angel and gift from God, of Granite Falls went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at her residence. She was born April 7, 1961, in Caldwell County, daughter of the late Lonnie and Elsie Porter Blackburn.

She is survived by four sisters, Linda Rabon and husband Mike of Granite Falls, Ida Belle Bumgarner and husband Bill, and Sandra Coffey, all of Hickory, and Bonnie Pennell of Thomasville; one brother, David “Bud” Blackburn and wife Nancy of Granite Falls; several nieces and nephews; and special caregiver Jennifer Hollifield with Catawba Valley Medical Services. A special thanks to the staff of Caldwell County Hospice for their loving care of our loved one.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, from 2 to 3 p.m. at New Vision Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Ashley Crouse officiating. Burial will be in the Temple Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Those serving as Pallbearers are Jacob Turner, Josh Turner, Wesley Turner, Carl Ericson, T.C. Hollifield, and Jaden Rambarran.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Sally Hayes

Sally Mae Setzer Hayes, 91, lifelong resident of Caldwell County, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014. She was the first-born child, born on April 4, 1922, to the late Robert Hayward Setzer and Virginia Suddreth Setzer of Collettsville.

In the early 1940s, she worked at the old Galvin Furniture and married Swan Hayes of Wilkesboro in 1943. They were the proud parents of three daughters.

In later years, she worked at Lenoir Furniture Corporation and following retirement she became the sole caretaker of her half-sister, Della Mae Setzer Harris of Hudson, who preceded her in death.

She was the last surviving member of her family, having lost her baby sister, Ruby Setzer Livingston of Taylorsville, a few months ago. She is also preceded in death by brothers, Norris, Bobby and Jim Setzer; half-brothers, Millard and Woodrow Setzer; and her first-born grandchild, Stephanie Reed, who died in 1972.

Loved ones left to cherish her memory are daughters, Judy Hayes Reed and husband Lonnie of Taylorsville, Peggy Hayes Martin and husband Mac of Lenoir and Susan Hayes Blizzard of Hickory; three grandsons, Aaron Blizzard and wife Stephanie, and Brett Reed, both of Hickory, and Jason Martin and wife Stefanie of Huntersville; four great-grandchildren, Brittany and Tristen Reed, Carter Martin and Emma Wheatley.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Whitnel, where her former pastor, the Rev. Stuart White will conduct graveside services on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. at Whitnel First Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel.

Serving as pallbearers will be Lonnie Reed, Mac Martin, Aaron Blizzard and Jason Martin.

The family wishes to express a special heartfelt gratitude to her favorite and beloved caretaker of 10 years, Nurse Susan Tugman.

Janet Kirby

Janet Delores Craig Kirby, 66, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a prolonged illness. She was born in Caldwell County on May 5, 1947, to the late Earl “Bobby” Craig and Hazel Coggins Craig. She was married to Daniel “Danny” Kirby of the home for 48 years.

Delores was an active member of Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in various capacities over the years. She most enjoyed working with the children in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for more than 30 years. Delores also went on several Youth Mission trips. She enjoyed doing all kinds of crafts and spending time camping and meeting people from all over the country. Delores was a marvelous wife, mother, MawMaw, and homemaker. She looked forward to seeing her Lord and loved ones who went before her.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Kirby, II; brother, Gary Craig; and sister, Pamela Craig Jenkins.

Other than her husband she is survived by her daughter, Jan Kirby Wilcox and husband Darryl; grandchildren, Heather Wilcox and Nicholas Wilcox; aunt, Mildred Underdown; nieces, Lori Jenkins and Kristen Jenkins; and numerous family members.

A celebration of Delores’ life will be held at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor Nicky Waters, Pastor Mark Dula, Pastor Bud Jernigan, and Pastor Ted Williams officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.

The Deacons of Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church will serve as Pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:30 prior to the service at the church.

Robert Avery III

Robert "Butch" Henry Avery III, 62, of Morganton died Monday Feb. 24, 2014. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Ebony Funeral Service of Morganton.

James Britt

James H. Britt, 90, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice. He was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on Jan. 24, 1924, and married to the late Wanda Sipes Britt.

Mr. Britt was a veteran of the United States Navy.

A graveside funeral service will be held at Bethel Advent Christian Church on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at 2 with military honors.
