Lois Clark Arney, 84, of Lenoir passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at her home. Born Sept. 14, 1929, in Burke County, Mrs. Arney was a daughter of the late Theodore Roosevelt and Cordie Berry Clark and the wife of the late John Ernest Arney.

Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Melissa Arney Roberts and Robert Ernest Arney and one sister, Brenda Crowe.

Mrs. Arney was raised in Maiden and the Hartland Community of Burke County. She was a member of Flemings Chapel Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Dennis Arney and wife Helen of Lenoir; sister, Joyce LeFever of Lenoir; sister-in-law, Ethel Arney; brother-in-law, Kenneth Tallent; eight grandchildren, John Arney, Diana Brown, Michael Roberts, Crystal Kennedy, Jason Arney, Daniel Arney, Timothy Arney, April Arney; and several great-grandchildren, including Gavin Arney, Madi Grace Arney, Clark Roberts, Dallis Roberts, Jacoby Kennedy, Jackie Ledford, Casey Ledford, Justin Ledford, and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mrs. Arney’s life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2014, at Flemings Chapel Baptist Church with Pastor Scott Shoffner officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 5 until 6:30 p.m. at Evans Funeral Service in Lenoir.

Virginia Craig (has photo)

Virginia Lucille McGarr Craig, 85, of Kenham Place, Lenoir, passed away on Thursday April 24 , 2014, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Craig was born Feb. 10, 1929, in Caldwell County to the late Horrace McGarr and Lillian Greene McGarr. She was retired from the Cabinet Room of Thomasville Furniture, where she worked for over 20 years. Mrs. Craig was a member of the Cajah’s Mountain Baptist Church for 55 years. She loved Atlanta Braves baseball and watched every game she could, but her grandchildren were the light of her life.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Craig was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Clyde “Pete” Craig; a son, Stephen Craig; six sisters and a brother.

Those left to cherish the memory of Virginia Craig include two daughters, Teresa Holden (Jack) of Granite Falls and Debbie Hudson (Roger) of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Jackie Barrier (Mike) of Granite Falls, Rana Adkins (Jason) of Lenoir, Jamie Holden of Lenoir, and Chad Hudson (Victoria) of Morganton; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Adkins, Stephen “Jake” Holden, and Elizabeth Hudson.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Craig will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Cajah’s Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Woodie officiating with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family of Mrs. Craig will receive visitors one hour prior to the service from 2 – 3 p.m. at Cajah’s Mountain Baptist Church.

The family requests that memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Darene Davis

Darene Church Davis, 84, of Hillsfarm Street NE, Lenoir, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the residence. She was born March 27, 1930, in Caldwell County to the late Glenn and Ollie Benfield Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ned Wilson Davis; three brothers, Clyde Church, G.S. Church and Warren Church; and one sister, Anna Lee Davis.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and an occasional substitute teacher. She was also a member of Tabernacle Advent Christian Church, where she served as Youth Director for 20 years, as well as serving as Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. She directed numerous weddings, plays and vacation Bible schools over the years as well.

Survivors include one daughter, Beth Darlene Davis of Lenoir; one son, Bradley Ned Davis and wife Lisa of Lenoir; and one grandson, Matthew Ryan Davis.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Tabernacle Advent Christian Church conducted by the Rev. Frank Hall. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Della Crowe Fowler Kirby, 93, of North Main Street, Granite Falls, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. She was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Watauga County to the late Robey C. and Maude Storie Crowe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George Fowler; second husband, Horace Lee Kirby; two sons, Johnny Edward Fowler and Ronald George Fowler; three stepsons, Wade R. Fowler, James L. Fowler and Gary G. Kirby; six brothers; and two sisters.

Ms. Kirby was retired from the Caldwell County Schools, where she worked in the cafeteria at Hudson Elementary School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Granite Falls.

Survivors include one son, Thomas L. Fowler of Rhodhiss; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia F. McCullar and husband Daryl of Granite Falls; one sister, Doris Icard of Granite Falls; grandchildren, Denise L. Boyd and husband Mark, Melissa L. Blevins, and husband Billy, both of Granite Falls, Carla Fowler of Baton and Angelique K. Bost of Hickory; great-grandchildren, Kristen B. Poarch and husband Justin, Tyler Boyd, Austin Blevins, all of Granite Falls, Josh Stacy of Asheville, Seth Fowler of Lenoir, Eli Scarberry and Lillie Scarberry, both of Baton; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, April 27, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Howard Fleming. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Darius Llewellyn Patterson, 58, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Patterson was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Junie Mae Lindon Patterson of Lenoir and the late Clifard Patterson. He worked for RPM Wood Finishes and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a faithful member of Mt Bethel/Mitchell Chapel AME Church, where he served as the Sunday school director.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Patterson of the home; his son, Anthony Ferguson and wife Briana of Lenoir; his daughter, Nita Abdullah and husband Said of Greensboro; his brothers, Ralph Lindon of Lenoir, and Eric Patterson and wife Cindy of Lenoir; his sister, Inece Patterson of Asheville. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law to cherish his memory.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, April 27, 2014, at 3 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Verdell Patterson and the Rev. James Wilfong officiating. Burial will follow the service Mitchell Chapel AME Church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.

Grady William Pennell, 89, of Morganton Boulevard, Lenoir, died Friday, April 25, 2014, at Lenoir Healthcare Center. He was born Oct. 27, 1924, in Alexander County to the late James Arthur and Maggie Reid Pennell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda C. Pennell; brothers, J. Frank Pennell and Leonard Pennell; and one sister, Ruby P. Crouch.

Mr. Pennell was retired from Bernhardt Furniture and was a faithful member of Flemings Chapel Baptist Church. He was a lifetime charter member of Gamewell Optimist and a member of Booster Club of West Caldwell.

Survivors include one son, Mickey Pennell and wife Barbara of Lenoir; one daughter, Sheree P. Goodale and husband Jim of Concord, Va.; three brothers, Hayden Pennell and wife Helen of Charlotte, Solon C. Pennell and wife Margaret of Lenoir, and Donald Pennell and wife Doris of Hudson; four grandchildren, Jason Pennell, Jarad Pennell, Preston Goodale and Bradley Goodale and one great-granddaughter, Alaina Goodale.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 28, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Flemings Chapel Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Scott M. Shoffner. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be members of Gamewell Optimist.

Annie H. Crouch, 92, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Conover Nursing & Rehab Center in Conover.

She was born on April 27, 1921, in Alexander County to the late William R. and Fannie Duncan Hollar. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Willard Clifford (Jack) Crouch; five brothers, Arthur Hollar, Fred Hollar, Floyd Hollar, Ted Hollar and Curley Hollar; six sisters, Mertie Hollar, Bertha Smith, Jennie Hollar, Effie Williams, Gladys Walker and Jeanette Harkness; one grandson, Jimmy L. Waters.

She was a Christian woman who loved all her family dearly and her friends and neighbors whom she would gladly make pumpkin or coconut pies for those who were sick or give a telephone call. She worked as a textile worker for over 40 years and was a member of Dudley Shoals Baptist Church where she enjoyed and loved her Sunday school class.

Survivors include her son, Tracy Crouch and wife Sandy of Granite Falls; two daughters, Jean Queen and husband John P. of Hickory, and Vickie Bowman and husband JB of Granite Falls; four grandchildren, Scott Waters, Brad Bowman, Matt Bowman and Gina Teague; eight great-grandchildren, Chelsea Waters, Parker, Levi, Bella, Jack and Kate Bowman, Mason and Abram Teague; two brothers-in-law, Richard Harkness and Buck Haigler; two sisters-in-law, Ms. Adrain (Betty) Starnes and Gladys (Tommy) Haigler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Monday, April 28, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church with the Reverends Gordon West and Don Ingle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 10 until 11 a.m., prior to the service.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Conover Nursing and Rehab Center for the wonderful care given to Annie.

Michael J. Kaylor, 62, of Morganton passed away Friday April 25, 2014, at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care following a period of declining health.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rachel Reid Buchanan, 64, of Connelly Springs passed away on Friday April 25, 2014, at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care following a period of declining health.

Rachel was born on April 23, 1950 in Caldwell County to the late Voige and Gladys Reid.

Survivors include her significant other Kenneth Bates of the home, one son Eugene L. Bumgarner and wife Michelle of Hudson and grandchildren Nate and Alex Bumgarner of Hudson. Also surviving are two brothers Bobby and Johnny Rex Reid of Granite Falls and her K-9 Companion Cassie.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 29, 2014 at 2 p.m. at North Cross Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Tomblin officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Hills Cemetery, Granite Falls.

Then family will receive friends on Monday April 28, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at North Cross Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd. Valdese, NC 28690.

Pallbearers will be Michael Adcock, Patrick Bates, Terrell Spencer, Mickey Suddreth, Conan Hunt and Joshua Smart.
