Grady Bentley

Ambrose Bryant

Ambrose Edgar Bryant, 96, passed away on July 4, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice.

He was born in Caldwell County on Dec. 29, 1917, to the late William Bryant and Ada Taylor Bryant. He was married to Faye Barrier Bryant of the residence. Mr. Bryant was a member of Celia Creek Baptist Church and served as a minister for 60 years to several churches in the area.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Roy Bryant and wife, Linda; Sybil Myers and husband, Charles; step-children, Bonita King, Ruth Thacker, Chris King and Jeff King; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mr. Bryant’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Monday, July 7, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Richard Shew and Pastor Ronnie Miller officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

James Crane Jr.

James D. Crane Jr., 69, of Hickory Nut Ridge Road, Hudson, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.

He was born March 7, 1945, in Caldwell County to the late James D. Crane Sr. and Ruby Crabb Crane. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edward W. Crane; and one grandson, Justin Tyler Rookstool.

Mr. Crane was a retired supervisor for Correll Turning Works.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bertha Greer Crane of the home; one son, James D. Crane III of Lenoir; one daughter, ReGina Rookstool of Hudson; one brother, Kenny Crane and wife Audrey of Lenoir; sister, Lavonda Watson; grandchildren, Josh Crane, Hunter Rookstool, Lauren Rookstool, Mackenzi Rookstool; one great-grandchild, Nevaeh Nichols; special granddaughter, Ashley Paige; and special great-grandson, Gabriel Paige.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. John Robbins.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kenny Crane, Tracy Crane, David Rookstool, Leon Greer, Sammy Greer, and Dale Greer.

Manuela Matilda Gordon

In loving memory of Mrs. Gordon, affectionately known as "Mamita," passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.

A Celebration of Mamita’s Life will be held on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Cornerstone Cremation Celebration of Life Center in Lenoir, N.C.

Barry Thomas

Barry Michael Thomas, 58, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2014.

He was born in Caldwell County on Feb. 3, 1956, to Francis Thomas and the late Sue Parton Thomas. Barry worked for 34 years at Lenoir Mirror. He loved being outdoors. gardening, hunting and fishing were activities he enjoyed. He also greatly enjoyed camping in the mountains with his family.

Other than his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Myrtle and Lester Parton; paternal grandmother, Mabel Thomas; and brother, Philip Thomas. In addition to his father, Barry is survived by his life-partner of nearly 30 years, Barbara Hollar; son, Brandon Thomas and wife Teresa; brothers, Mark Thomas, and Kevin Thomas and wife Wendy; sister, Lisa Barber; grandsons, Jacob Thomas and Isaiah Thomas; and his nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Mr. Thomas’ life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2-3 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tony Parton, Steve Williams, Alfred Hollar, James Hendrix, Junior Hendrix and Brian Dula. Freddy Hollar will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
