Vera Elizabeth Horton Myers, 80, of Lenoir died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. Mrs. Myers was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Caldwell County. She was the daughter of the late Larkin Horton Sr., and Effie Minnie Lipford Horton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Avery Myers and one sister Deloris Jackson.
Mrs. Myers was a chef for 25 years at Holiday Inn and a member of St. Paul AME Church.
Survivors include three sons, Herb Myers (Barbara) of Morganton, Malverne Myers of the home, and Gary Myers of Lenoir; three daughters, Marisa Drew (Ted), and Margo Parsons (Joey) all of Lenoir, and Joelle Henry of Asheville; brother, Larkin Horton Jr., (Patricia) of Lenoir; three sisters, Virginia Coverson of Philadelphia, Pa., Mary Jean Dula (Billy Joe), and Gladys Bowers (Harold) all of Lenoir; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Byron J. Grayson officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 12:55 p.m. at the church. The burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Ebony Funeral Services of Lenoir is serving the Myers family. Dawn Dee Avery, 47, of District Heights, Md., died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Ebony Funeral Services of Morganton.
Dare Greer Isaacs, 89, of 12216 U.S. 421 North, Zionville, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, 2013, at her home.
Mrs. Isaacs was born May 28, 1924, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late William Henley Greer and Elmina Oliver Greer. She was a retired enviromental services employee for Watauga Medical Center, and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Isaacs is survived by one daughter, Sue Isaacs and husband Gary of Vilas; five sons, Bob Isaacs and wife Gail of Zionville, Hal Isaacs and wife Lynne of Lenoir, Carlton Isaacs and wife Mary of Zionville, Lynn Isaacs of the home, and Teddy Isaacs and wife Teresa of Boone; and one brother, Don Greer of Zionville. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Isaacs; four sisters, June McGlammery, Ethel Perry, Martha Greer, and Mae Thomas; and seven brothers, Fontz Greer, Reverend Arnt Greer, Norman Greer, Raymond Greer, Von Greer, Clay Greer, and Mylo Greer.
A funeral for Mrs. Dare Greer Isaacs will be conducted Thursday evening, Sept. 5, 2013, at 7 o'clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 5 until 7 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Bill Hayden, the Rev. Thomas Brown, and the Rev. T.J. Wilson. Graveside services and burial will be conducted Friday morning, at 11 o'clock, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 5 until 7 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 12216 U.S. 421 North, Zionville.

Ernest A. "Big E" Phillips Jr., 90, of Rochester, Ind., died Aug. 31, 2013.
Survivors include a brother, John R. Phillips and wife Susan of Lenoir.

Cora Cornelia Norwood Powell, 90, lovingly called “Ms. Key,” died on Sept. 1, 2013, at her daughter’s home in Mount Holly after an extended illness. Cornelia was born Dec. 9, 1922, in Lenoir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ulus Powell, and her granddaughter, Brittany Boone, and her 12 siblings. Ms. Key leaves a great legacy to her family of music ministry and Christian service. She served as church organist and choir director at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church for 47 years, teaching some families up to five generations.
Cornelia is survived by her daughter, the Rev. Melodie Powell Boone, and her son-in-law, the Rev. Tony D. Boone; grandsons Brian and Bryson Boone; and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family. Family visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Worship Service at noon at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church, 426 Woodsway Lane, Lenoir, with the Rev. Charles Rivens officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery. The family would like to give a special thank you to staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte Region for their compassionate care and service. Mae Gloria Coston Jacobs, 73, of Lenoir passed away on Aug. 30, 2013, in Carson, Calif. She was born Jan. 29, 1940, to Mrs. Myrtle C. Coston and the late John C. Coston of Wallace.
Gloria graduated in 1958 from Charity High School, Rose Hill, N.C. Following High School, she continued her education and obtained a Bachelor’s of Science Degree and a Master’s Degree. Gloria was employed as an educator in Los Angeles, Calif., for over 20 years.
She is survived by her devoted husband of over 50 years, Hezekiah Jacobs; daughters Lita Jacobs, Lorie Diggs and Libby Jacobs-Hutton (Vernon) of Los Angeles; grandchildren Johnathan Jacobs, Jeremy Diggs, Jennifer Diggs and Dominique Jacobs; great-grandchildren Jeremiah and Sariah of Los Angeles; and her mother, Myrtle Coston of Wallace.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 4134 Piney Woods Road, Watha, NC. Interment will follow the funeral services. A memorial service is also scheduled for 6:30 pm Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at Lenoir Community Church, 1002 Lower Creek Drive NE, Lenoir. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., at Dunn Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 810 W. Wilmington St., Burgaw.
