James Day

James “Randy” Day, 58, of Lenoir went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Day was born in Caldwell County to the late James Thomas Day and the late Junie Brown Day. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Edward Austin, and one sister, Jeanette Hardee.

Mr. Day is a member of Miracle Church in Lenoir and was employed by Bernhardt Furniture Corporation in Lenoir. Mr. Day truly loved his family and enjoyed the time he was able to spend with them.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 38 years, Robin Walker Day of the home; a son, Justin Ryan Day and wife Rebecca of Lenoir; a daughter, Jessica Reann Day and husband Ricky of Lenoir; four granddaughters, Alissa Day, Macy Day, Jadyn Day and Michala Watson, all of Lenoir; three sisters, Geneva McCloud of Lenoir, Doris Scruggs of Lenoir and Mary Ellen Anderson and husband Berkley of Lenoir; and a brother, David Day and wife Ruby of Lenoir.

Funeral Service for Mr. Day will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 3 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Tim Suter officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir. The family of Mr. Day will receive friends an hour and a half prior to the service at Pendry’s Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Day, Ricky Watson, David Allen Day, Mark Day, Jason Harris and Jerry Curtis.

Richard Hines

Richard Larry Hines, 74, of Lenoir passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center in Concord.

Mr. Hines was born in Caldwell County to the late Vernon McDowell Hines and Frances Faries Hines.

Mr. Hines was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Boy Scouts of America. He also loved going fishing and enjoyed creating artistic paintings.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 27 years, Lynn Lamkin Hines of the home; a son, Jeff Hines and wife Tammy of Lenoir; a daughter, Ginger Crisp of Lenoir; two granddaughters, Tiffany Hines and Katy Crisp of Lenoir; a brother, Michael Hines and wife Patricia of Arlington, Va.; and a niece, Marianne Tolosa, and nephew, Matthew Hines. Also left to cherish his memory are his aunt Helen Johnson of Lenoir and many friends and extended family.

Funeral Service for Mr. Hines will be held Tuesday, May, 14, 2013, at 4 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Belleview Cemetery in Lenoir. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at Pendry’s Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Pete Yount, Martin Benfield, Ronnie Craig, Odell Watson, Ashton Barlowe and Matthew Hines.

Serving as Honorary pallbearers will be Hal “Bugsy” Justice, Clarence Curtis, Steve McCorkle and Mike Triplett.

Memorials may be made to the Hibriten Masonic Lodge at P.O. Box 166 Lenoir, NC 28645 ; All donations made in memory of Mr. Hines will be used to toward the many charities that the Masonic Lodge contributes to yearly, including St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and many other charities.

Herman Lyons

Herman Lyons, 67, of Conover died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Regional Hospice of Catawba Valley. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mary Houck

Mary Alice McCall Houck, 76, of Statesville, formerly of Lenoir, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 27, 1937, in Caldwell County to the late Claude A. and Johnsie Prestwood McCall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her life-long companion and husband, Gerald “PeeWee” Thomas Houck.

Mrs. Houck was a graduate of Gamewell-Collettsville High School in Lenoir. She was retired from Bell South as an engineer after 37 years of service. She was an avid gardener and loved working outdoors in her flowers. She also loved traveling with her family and caring for her pets over the years. She was a member of Littlejohn United Methodist Church, Lenoir.

Survivors include her sister, Claudine M. Moore of Lenoir; niece, Renee Davis and husband Davey of Lenoir; nephew, Mike Moore and wife Dee of Lenoir; great-niece, Felicia Crouch and husband Jeff; great-nephews, Josh Shew and wife Kelly, Tyler and Elliot Moore; and four great-great-nieces Kyndel Crouch, Lana-Faith, Kenzley and Jaylee Shew. She also leaves behind her beloved pet cat, Whiskers.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rick Safriet. Interment will follow at Littlejohn United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her sister, Claudine Moore, Lenoir.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Moore, Tyler Moore, Jeff Crouch, Josh Shew, Bob Prestwood and Troy McCall.

Virgil Dillard

Virgil Dillard, 84, of Laytown Road, Lenoir, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was born May 25, 1928, in Caldwell County to the late Charlie Thomas and Burlie Cantor Dillard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Roben V. Dillard; brothers, John Dillard, Lester Dillard and Mansfield Dillard; and sisters, Ruby Lee Dillard, Sylvania Dillard, Maggie Clark and Lucille Rose.

Mr. Dillard was retired from Bernhardt Furniture and a member of Laytown Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Barlow Dillard; son, Robert Virgil Dillard and wife Sandra; sister, Charlotte Pope; and grandson, Brandon Robert Dillard and wife Jennifer Kirchner.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Laytown Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ted Williams.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Bill King, Terry Walsh, Steve Barlowe, Jerry Dillard, Brian Dula and Brent Dula.

Olan Whisnant

Olan R.C. “Fats” Whisnant, 77, of Hudson went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, May 13, 2013, at Brian Center in Hickory.

Born July 5, 1935, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Roscoe Clyde Whisnant and the Late Vergie Elizabeth Smart. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and worked in the furniture industry.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Whisnant; four brothers, Larry, Worth, Harvey and Carol Whisnant; and one sister, Eva Huffman.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Whisnant of the home; three sons, Richard Whisnant and wife Kathy of Hudson, Randy Whisnant of Hudson, and Roger Whisnant and wife Lee Anne of Kings Creek; three brothers, Eazelle and Dennis Whisnant of Casar, and Jerry Whisnant of Cookesville; two sisters, Colleen Young of Hickory and Margaret Bolick of Vale; five grandchildren, Jason, Matthew, Jonathan, Jessica, Jamie; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Julie Ann, Lane, and Tre; and his dog of 16 years, Buddy.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Pastor Raymond Spann and Pastor Lonnie Bell officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Mackie Funeral Home from 7-8:30 in the evening. Burial will follow the funeral service in the church cemetery.

Vonetta Fountain

Vonetta I. Fountain, 89, of Poplar Street, Lenoir, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Ronald Bowean

Ronald Naquam "Popo" Bowean, 34, of Knoxville passed away with peace, surrounded by love on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He died from complications related to pneumonia after living with dignity and grace with cerebral palsy.

Ronald was a graduate of Fort Sanders Educational Development Center. He also attended the United Cerebral Palsy School Age Programs in Queens, N.Y. Ronald was an associate member of both the Christian Center of Knoxville and Grace Bible Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Laura Norwood Bowean; father, Walter Ronald Patterson; and aunt, Charlene Bowean. He is survived by his mother Eather Mae Bowean, twin sister Lolly Bowean, cousin/brothers Demetrios, Yusef and Julius Bowean.
