Clarence Cooke

Clarence Steven Cooke, 57, of Lenoir, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 25, 1956, in Caldwell County to Shirley Mahaffey Clark Lee and the late Clarence Russell Cooke. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a daughter.

Survivors in addition to his mother include one daughter, Jennifer Philyaw of Hickory; one brother, Terry Russell Cooke of Collettsville; two sisters, Karen Cooke Lewis and Anita Lynn Cooke, both of Lenoir; two uncles, Richard Cooke and Doug Mahaffey both of Lenoir; and two aunts, Florence Price of Lenoir and Betty Miller of Buffalo Cove.

Memorial services will be held Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Nazareth Advent Christian Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Philyaw.

Clay Brookshire

Clay David Brookshire, 93, of Calico Road, Lenoir, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care-Lenoir.

He was born March 9, 1920, in Wilkes County to the late Herman Ray and Myrtle Livingston Brookshire. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Odell Brookshire, Earl Brookshire and Malcolm Brookshire; and four sisters, Zeffie Gragg, Virginia Triplett, Sadie Pennell and Vergie Rainey.

Mr. Brookshire was retired from Broyhill Furniture, attended Nazareth Advent Christian Church and was a U.S. Army WWII veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mrs. Siddie Walsh Brookshire of the home; two sons, David Ray Brookshire and wife Trisha of Tucson, Ariz., and Chester Aaron Brookshire and wife Pamela of Lenoir; one sister, Margaret Land of Lenoir; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, May 19, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Nazareth Advent Christian Church Cemetery, 3221 Deerbrook Road, Lenoir, conducted by the Rev. Scott Philyaw.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Arthur Davenport

Arthur Alexander Davenport, 58, of Lenoir passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013.

He was born in Caldwell County to the late Marvin Prince Alexander Link and Betty Jo Tilley Davenport. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters Janice Davenport and Pauline Odessa (Ronnie) Corpening, and his grandfather, Larkin Tilley, and grandmother, Ossie Tilley.

Arthur served in the United States Marine Corp for two years. After being honorably discharged from a tour of duty in Europe he came back to the states working a short time at Bernhardt Furniture and later for the Martin Luther King Center, H. K. Research and odd jobs for his great uncle Millard Link. He also worked a security job at Caldwell Memorial Hospital and custodian and bus driver at South Caldwell High and West Lenoir Middle School. Eventually obtaining employment at the City of Lenoir Sanitation Department working as a garbage handler and working his way to Sanitation Superintendent until his sudden illness. He worked as Superintendent for 21½ years. Over the years he enjoyed playing golf, fishing and softball. The love of his life along with having fun with his grandchildren, taking fishing trips to the coast at Atlantic Beach and volunteering to help anyone that he could. He loved serving the citizens of Caldwell County until his sudden death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 35 years, Anna Avery Davenport of the home; his daughters, Christy Wallace of Hickory and Nichole Davenport of Lenoir; his stepson, Brian Kelly Ferguson; and a sister, Mrs. Raymond “Annie” Logan Sr. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held, Sunday, May 19, 2013, at 3 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Carpenter, the Rev. James Wilfong, the Rev. Doug Cubertson and the Rev. Bobby Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral from 2:25 p.m. until 2:55 p.m.

The family requests that memorials be made to Chambers Chapels Baptist Church, 4089 Chambers Chapel Circle, Morganton, NC 28655.

Tammy Reid

Tammy Faye Hardin Reid, 42, of Hudson went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, May 17, 2013, at her residence. Born Feb. 22, 1971, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of Jesse Glen Hardin and Rita Faye Stamey Hardin.

She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Mae Stamey.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry William Reid Jr., and one son, Nathan Glen Reid, both of the home; her aunt and uncle, Connie and Ronnie Winkler of Hickory; three cousins, Heather Winkler Parkhurst, Emma Winkler, and Korbin Parkhurst; and her best friend, Molly Williams.

Receiving of friends will be Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Center Grove Baptist Church from 1 to 2 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Rev. Doug Howell will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Thomas Teague Sr.

Thomas Boyd Teague Sr., 80, of Collettsville Road, Lenoir, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care-Hudson. He was born May 9, 1933, in Caldwell County to the late Fred Alvin and Novella Auton Teague. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred Teague Jr., Malcolm C. Teague, Charles E. Teague and Danard “J.D.” Teague; one sister, Kathleen Pitts; and two granddaughters, Lisa Ann Teague and Tonya N. Smith.

Mr. Teague was a retired truck driver for Sunbelt Furniture Express and was a member of North Lenoir Church of God.

Survivors include his significant other, Flowers Marie Yates of Lenoir; two sons, Thomas Boyd Teague Jr. of Lenoir, and Tony Dean Teague and wife Sandra Hollifield Teague of Hudson; one brother, Billy A. Teague and wife Juanita Story Teague of Lenoir; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dennis Pitts and the Rev. Darrell Wright. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Blowing Rock, N.C.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jerry Teague Jr., Terry Teague, Ronnie Teague, Rickey Yates, Michael Green and Darrell Dillard.

Honorary pallbearer will be Thomas Strickland.

John Vanstory

John Henry Vanstory, 95, died May 16, 2013.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home on Wilkesboro Boulevard, Lenoir, with a service immediately following. Interment will be at Snow Creek Cemetery in Olin.

Naomi Laws

Naomi Ellen Laws, 87, of North Wilkesboro went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 16, 2013.

Born Aug. 24, 1925, in Wilkes County, Naomi was a daughter of the late Arthur and Minnie Melinda Adams Ballard. She was a member of the Fishing Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed reading and gardening. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and shopping. She worked for a number of years with the Holly Farms Company. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Garfield Ballard and Fred Ballard; one sister, Mabel Stout; and two grandchildren, Jason Laws and Ronnie Alan Laws.

Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Roberts and husband Elbert of Traphill, Ethel L. Brown and husband Todd of Ronda, and Vanessa Laws and husband Ronnie of Lenoir; two sons, Don E. Laws, and Nathan Ronald Laws and wife Kim, both of North Wilkesboro; one sister, Charlotte Williams of North Wilkesboro; one brother, Woodrow “Chuck” Ballard of St. Augustine, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and other relatives.

A celebration of Naomi’s life will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Todd Brown officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 6 to 7 p.m.
