Mike “Doe” Mikeal, 56, of Lenoir passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte.

Mr. Mikeal was born in Caldwell County to Mary Elizabeth Nelson Mikeal of Gamewell and the late Clyde Mikeal.  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson Mikeal.  He worked as a carpenter.  He was a member of the Gamewell Optimist Club and coached youth and teen baseball.  Never met a stranger, he loved all and was loved by all. He most dearly loved his family and friends.  Was cheerful in all weathers, never shirked a task, and had splendid behavior.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alice “Michele” Wilson Mikeal of the home; his son, Shane Wilson and wife Lacie of Sawmills; his brother, Tony Mikeal and wife Kim of Nebo; his sisters, Libby Harris and husband Bob of Hudson, and April Carlton and husband Rusty of Maryland; nephews, Cody Mikeal and wife Becky of Hickory, and Travis Carlton; great nephew, Koa Mikeal of Hickory and great niece, Reese Mikeal of Hickory.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Dry Ponds Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Crouse officiating.  Burial will follow at Philadelphia Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Dry Ponds Baptist Church from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Moe Bean, Junior Saunders, Ralph Triplett, John Moore Allen Rudisill, Joey Smith, Allen Warren, Jerry Brown, Barry Waters, Johnny Main and Barry Moore.  Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Bean, Jeff  Benfield, Joe Don Biggerstaff, Jerry Brooks, Dave Christian, David Drum, Brian Hollar, Brad Hoover, Duck Hudson, Marty Huffman, Horry Kent, Mike Kent, Duck Mikeal, Jeff Moore, Doug Moss, Bob Prestwood, Hoss Prestwood, Scott Scruggs, Brent Swanson, Danny Swanson, Joey Watson, Mike Willis, and Gary Woods and many others who we may have overlooked during this difficult time, we apologize.

Roger Godfrey

Roger Flay Godfrey, age 59, of McCrary Place, Lenoir, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was born March 10, 1954 in Columbia, S.C. to Flay George Godfrey of Lenoir and the late Nellie Harriet Bradley Godfrey. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald (Ronnie) Blaine Godfrey.

Mr. Godfrey was a United States Army Veteran.

Survivors in addition to his father, include one brother, Gary Godfrey and wife Eva Mae of Hudson; and two sisters, Wanda Clawson and Patsy Toon and husband Alfred, both of Lenoir.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 2 p.m. at The Disable American Veterans Home, 4113 Hickory Nut Ridge Rd., Hudson, N.C. 28638 conducted by DAQV Chapter 6 Chaplain Bobby Harmon.

Military Honors will be provided by DAV Chapter 6 Honor Guard.

Stewart Propst

Lenoir, NC – Mr. Stewart Michael Propst, age 62, passed away on May 23, 2013 at Gateway Nursing Center. He was born in Catawba County to the late Jordan Wardell Propst and Mary Louise Scott Wardell.  Mr. Propst had worked for Sealed Air Corporation for 17 years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ted Propst and Danny Propst.

He is survived by his children, Travis Propst and wife Patricia; Teresa Propst; Tammy Bowman and husband Mark; sister, Shirley Propst; grandchildren, Ashley Allison, Alexis Loveland, Travis J. Propst, and Emily Propst; and great-grandchildren, Hayden Allison and Avery Allison.

A private memorial service was held for Mr. Propst.

Robert Stutz

Robert Amos Stutz, 64 of Lenoir passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Born April 16, 1949 in Ashland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Glenn and Sarah Stutz. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, James Stutz; one sister, Janet Slagle; and a grandson, Austin Dakota Stutz.

Mr. Stutz was a United States Air Force Veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Diana Stutz of the home; daughter, April Stutz and fiancé Matt Absher of North Wilkesboro, NC; son, Robert Stutz and wife Robin of Pelzer, S.C.; Granddaughter, Regan Gregory of Pelzer, S.C.; Grandson, Ashton Stutz of Pelzer, S.C.; one brother, Glenn Stutz of Lake Wood, Washington; and his sister Sarah Marker of Ashland, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2013, 10 a.m. at Bass-Smith Granite Chapel with Rev. Calvin Hargett officiating. The family will receive friends at Bass-Smith Granite on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Burial will follow in the Rainbow Cemetery in Mtn. City Tennessee.

John Hinson

John Lee Hinson, age 82, of Crump Road, Lenoir, died Monday, May 27, 2013 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was born July 2, 1930 in Sumter County, South Carolina to the late Sammy Lee and Rosa Mae Scott Hinson.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Hinson Hawkins; sister, Rosa Lee Thigpen; sister-in-law, Mable Coffey; and brothers-in-law, Bobby Lackey and Joe Lackey.

Mr. Hinson was retired from Broyhill Furniture and a member of Clarks Chapel Baptist Church. He was also a United States Air Force Veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lackey Hinson of the home; two sons, Samuel Edward Hinson and wife Serina of Rutherford College and James Lee Hinson and wife Sherry of Lenoir; one daughter, Jeanette Waldrup of Lenoir; one brother, Lewis E. Hinson of Sumter, S.C.; brother-in-law, Johnny Lackey and wife Georgia of Lenoir; sister-in-law, Ada Lackey Laws of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Jordan Hinson, Tim Waldrup, John Waldrup and Eric Waldrup; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Clarks Chapel Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David McNeil. Interment with military honors will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Richard Matheson (with photo)

Reverend and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, Richard Dale Matheson, age 77, of Corolla Hills Drive, Lenoir, passed away and went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. He was born August 24, 1935 in Caldwell County to the late Rev. Grady Lee Matheson and Ruth Church Matheson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Eileen Allison.

Mr. Matheson was a graduate of NC State and George Washington University with a Master’s in accounting.  He was in charge of Washington Pentagon field office of Defensive Investigation Service for Department of Defense. He was Chaplain for Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department for 20 years and chaplain for the West Caldwell High football team for a number of years. He was a member of Hibriten Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He was a retired United States Army Veteran, serving three tours of Vietnam. He served as a former pastor for several churches in Caldwell County and was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Maxine Coffey Matheson of the home; children, Richard “Rick” Dale Matheson, Jr. and wife Diane of Lenoir, Kim Matheson McGalliard and husband Doug of Lenoir; brother, Rev. Gary Lee Matheson and wife Wanda of Lenoir; sister, Barbara Matheson Hawkins of Lenoir; grandchildren, Heather Miller and husband Chad of Lenoir, Hayley Penley and fiancé Steven of Hudson, Amy Leigh McJunkin of Lenoir, Brooke Matheson of Lenoir, Malarie McGalliard of Raleigh, Madalyn McGalliard of Lenoir, Chris Robbins and wife Suzy of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Hunter Penley, Ashlyn Miller, Macy Penley, Molly Penley, Alley Miller, Grayson Priddy, Meliea McJunkin, Logan McJunkin and Bailey Robbins; and a multitude of  nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 11 a.m. at College Avenue Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Charles Brawley and Pastor Tim Hawkins. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park with full military honors.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be: Barry Curtis, Hugh Curtis, Steven Gill, Tim Hawkins, Greg Matheson, Kevin Matheson, Chad Miller, Hunter Penley, Connelly Phillips, Chris Robbins, Robert Roland, Fred Sides, Gary Sumpter and Grady Sumpter.
