Ruth Setzer

Ruth Oliver Setzer, 87, of Lenoir passed away May 30, 2013, at Carolina Rehab of Burke.

Mrs. Setzer was born Sept. 9, 1925, to the late Thomas and Mae Oliver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Walter Setzer; a son, Clarence Douglas Setzer; her brothers, Rayford, Thomas (Spud), Haskel, Paul and Norris Oliver; her sisters, Thelma Oliver, Olphelia Oliver Baker, Angell Oliver Adkins, Ramona Oliver Icenhour and Christine Oliver Roper; nephews, Dan and Larry Oliver and a niece, Roxie Adkins Clark.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hartland Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Sylvia Setzer Dunn and husband John, Janice Setzer and Deborah McCall Horne; a sister, Marceline Oliver Knight; grandchildren, Todd Setzer, Leanne Setzer Hall and husband Dwayne, Larry Richard Setzer Jr., Hope Setzer Hughes and husband Marc, Sharon Dunn Grindstaff and husband Charles, David Michael Dunn, Scott McCall and wife Julia, Meredith Horne Bazemore and husband “J,” Cara McCall Foucht and husband Mike Medwedeff; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, June 2, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Todd Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home Sunday from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The Setzer family would like to thank the many longtime friends, nurses, doctors, CNA’s and staff at Carolina Rehab of Burke and Lenoir Park. A special thanks to Carolina Rehab of Burke for making our beautiful Mother’s last days as comfortable as possible at Carolina Rehab of Burke and the way they showed her respect, honor and friendship during her stay there and to Tina Hartley at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative in Lenoir whose kindness and caring helped us make Mother’s last journey sweet and peaceful.

Mary Butler

Mary Sides Butler, 81, of Charlotte, formerly of Lenoir, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Carrington Place. She was born May 4, 1932, in Caldwell County to the late Willis Victor Sides and Flossie Smith Sides. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Kenneth Butler; two brothers, George D. Sides and James L. Sides; and one sister, Marcelle Sides Oxford.

Mrs. Butler was a homemaker and a member of College Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Gail B. Laws of Charlotte and Mrs. Linda Freeman of Lenoir; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Friday, May 31, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Belleview Cemetery conducted by Dr. Charles R. Brawley.

Nancy Moore

Nancy Ruth Gragg Moore, 66, of Hudson went home to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and a lot of family in heaven waiting on her.

Born June 21, 1946, in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Ashley Gragg and Ruth Brewer Gragg. Nancy was a loving mother and grandmother, and a good Christian. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter; a sister, Pearline Gragg Walden; and a brother, Eddy Eugene Gragg.

Left behind to grieve her passing are three sons, Darrin Moore, Shane Moore, and Nicholas “Nick” Moore and wife Misty; one daughter, Vickie Houck; two brothers, Dennis Gragg, and John Gragg and wife Cindy; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and she is also survived by a number of friends and family.

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Donald Gragg officiating. Interment will be at the Madison Roosevelt Gragg Cemetery at 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 2, 2013, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Evans Funeral Service and Crematory.

Roderick Carney Jr.

Roderick J. Carney Jr., 74, of Yorktown Court, Lenoir, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the residence. He was born Dec. 1, 1938, in New London, Conn., to the late Roderick Carney and Florence Provost Carney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kyle Brendan Carney; and brothers, Leon Carney, Norman Carney and Allan Carney.

Roderick was an advocate of the law and of devotion to one’s country, serving in the Rhode Island National Guard and devoting over 36 years of service to the U.S. federal government and local law enforcement. In 1970, Roderick was a member of the 98th session of the graduating class of the U.S. Border Patrol Academy, and he is succeeded by three of his grandsons, Josh, Jason, and Justin, who are serving as U.S. Border Patrol agents in the same sector where their grandfather was stationed. Roderick served as Port Director of both the Vancouver National Airport and Camden offices of U.S. Immigration. As an extension to his federal service with U.S. Immigration, Roderick returned to law enforcement in 1997 as an ICE Special Agent for the Department of Homeland Security, which he retired from in 2007. Roderick was a member of the Fraternal Order of Retired Border Patrol Officers and the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 83 in Caldwell County.

Survivors include his wife, Mi Kyong Kim Carney of the home; four sons, Christopher Shawn Carney and wife Katherine of Tuscon, Ariz., Todd Patrick Carney and wife Lucy Albergaria of Miami, Fla., and Thomas Kim Carney and wife Tiffany Pak of Manhattan, N.Y., and Bryan Carney of Georgia; daughters, Jennifer Carney Davis of Cranston, R.I., and Stephanie Carney of Georgia; brother, James Thomas Carney and wife Joanne of Fall River, Mass.; grandchildren Jason, Josh, Justin, Jessica, Ryan, Connor, Katelin, Kaleigh Carney, Joseph and Tina Furtado; sisters-in-law, Donna Carney of New Hampshire and Helen Carney of Rhode Island.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jim Hamby. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Thomas Kim Carney, Todd Patrick Carney, Ryan Carney, Justin Carney, James Thomas Carney and Chris Robinson.

Alfred W. Dula, 69, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013, at the Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.
