Ruby Seehorn

Ruby Gilbert Seehorn, 91, of Lenoir passed away Friday, June 27, 2014, at her residence. She was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Mount Holly, North Carolina. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ted R. Seehorn; her father, David Lee Gilbert, her mother, Maude Absher Gilbert; her brother, Ralph Gilbert; and her sister, Polly Gilbert Stone.

Ruby attended school in Mount Holly, and later after her marriage to Ted, attended Clevenger College in Lenoir. She always said that she regretted never being able to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending nursing school. Instead, she devoted herself to the care of her grandfather, her mother, and her uncle in their twilight years, while still managing to assume the role of a mother hen to all those whose lives she touched.

After her youngest child entered first grade, she began her career outside the home. Ruby first worked for Broyhill Furniture Industries in the Order-Billing department. She left Broyhill to join the staff at Blue Ridge Electric, later becoming Caldwell District Manager. She forged friendships that would last her entire life.

Ruby was a Lifetime Member of the Lenoir Women’s Club and the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion. She was also a member of BPW. Ruby was a member of First United Methodist Church and for many years was active in her circle and particularly enjoyed the Evening Bible Studies, which she attended until her health prevented it.

Although she was born a Democrat, she was still very involved with Ted in the local Republican Party. She especially enjoyed numerous trips to Washington during James Broyhill’s congressional years.

Ruby and Ted’s wish was to remain in their home until the end of their lives. Donna Stewart made this a reality. After Dad’s passing and Ruby’s steady decline, Donna was joined by Sheila Miller and Lisa Haynes. They made Ruby’s final years both comfortable and special. These three angels will always be a part of a family ever grateful that with their help Ted and Ruby’s wishes were fulfilled.

Ruby and Ted were like bookends … their lives incomplete without each other. It is so right that they are together again.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Caldwell County Hospice & Palliative Care of Lenoir, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645, or the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, 401 Main St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

“Cremate what is left of me … ashes to ashes, dust to dust … if you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses, and all my prejudice against my fellow man. Give my soul to God. If by chance you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.” Author Unknown.
