Virginia Broyhill

Virginia Hallman Broyhill, 101, of Lenoir passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Virginia was born Jan. 8, 1913, to the late Daniel Cleatus Hallman and Era Fannie Dellinger Hallman in Burke County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, R. Ted Broyhill; a daughter, Patricia Broyhill Hudson; her brothers, Ralph Grady, Joel Hunter, Johnnie William and Daniel Cleatus Hallman Jr.; her sisters, Jewel Hallman Johnson and Agnes Hallman Hildebran; and a grandson, Charles H. Cobb.

Virginia loved Big Band music and liked to tell about going to Pete Fountain’s Club in New Orleans and hearing him play and went to many other concerts, and loved watching "The Lawrence Welk Show" regularly as well as "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." She enjoyed traveling with her husband and children, traveling to Atlanta with Bill and Ginny, three trips to Hawaii with her son Bill, who also took them to San Francisco and Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Palm Springs and a drive along the California Coast. She loved spending summers in Blowing Rock and shared many happy memories of that beautiful mountain town. She loved playing golf and watched golf in her later years. She loved to be with and reminisce about family and her many special friends. Virginia loved her church and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir and faithfully attended until her health no longer allowed her to and then watched the church services on TV.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Virginia “Ginny” Broyhill Cobb of Hickory, and Linda Broyhill Hogan of Bradenton, Fla.; her son, William Thomas “Bill” Broyhill of Charlotte; her sister, Margaret H. Baucom of Hickory; grandchildren, Laura V. Hudson Welch, Bradley G. Hudson, Elizabeth Broyhill Cobb, Stephen P. Hogan, Linda Susan Hogan Mueller and Timothy M. Hogan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss her immeasurably.

A funeral service will be held Monday, July 7, 2014, at 3 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with Dr. Thomas Hinton officiating. Burial will follow at Belleview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home prior to the service from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Lenoir, 304 Main St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Lucy Huffman

Lucy Nadine Fox Huffman, 81, of Lenoir passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Gateway Nursing Home in Lenoir.

Funeral services are incomplete, but will be announced at a later time.

Willard Blevins

Willard Lee Blevins, 68, of Lenoir died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Pansy Keene

Pansy “Pat” Viola Calloway Keene, 84, of Hickory Street, Hudson, died Monday, June 30, 2014, at the residence. She was born June 4, 1930, in Watauga County to the late James Leo and Vinnie Arnette Calloway. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayburn Calloway and Holt W. Calloway; and two sisters, Beatrice Kaylor and Elsie Reece.

Mrs. Keene was a substitute teacher and loved ministering and winning people to the Lord. She attended Hillside Baptist Church in Hickory.

Survivors include her husband, Ben W. Keene of the home; two sons, Terry L. Austin of Lake City, Fla., and Richard L. McLeod of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Judy E. Austin of Granite Falls, Linda C. Culpepper of Hudson and Nancy L. Banks of Neptune Beach, Fla.; brothers, J.H. Calloway and Buster Calloway, both of Hickory, Jim Calloway of Cajah's Mountain and Ronnie Calloway of Granite Falls; one sister, Glenda C. Carter of Sawmills; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. David Crump. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.

Earl Bumgarner

Earl Dean Bumgarner, 44, of North Wilkesboro died Monday, June 30, 2014, at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at the Church of God of the Union Assembly with the Rev. Ronnie Bumgarner officiating. Burial will be in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilbar. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Bumgarner was born Dec. 22, 1969, in Wilkes County to Leonard Bryant and Bertha Mae Adams Bumgarner. He worked for Bernhardt Furniture and was a member of the Church of God of the Union Assembly. He was a little league coach for 14 years, and coached the Junior League State Champs in 2011.

Mr. Bumgarner was an avid deer and duck hunter. He loved fishing with his boys and spending time with his family. He is survived by: his wife, Tammy Jo Frazier Bumgarner of the home; two sons, Johnathon Earl Bumgarner and Nicholas Dillon Bumgarner, both of the home; three sisters, Vicki Smith and husband Kenny of Hays, Lisa Brewer and husband Ricky, Sharon Triplette and husband Jeff, all of North Wilkesboro; six brothers, Leonard Bumgarner and wife Nancy, Eddie Bumgarner and wife Shanna, Jerry Bumgarner, and Will Bumgarner, all of North Wilkesboro, Dennis Bumgarner and wife Tracy of Boomer, and Ronnie Bumgarner and wife Vanessa of Purlear.

Jessie Horton

Jessie Mae Hood Horton, 78, of Lenoir passed away Monday, June 30, 2014, at Gateway Nursing Center. She was born Jan. 31, 1936, in Caldwell County to the late James A. and Nannie G. Corpening Hood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Gordon Hood, Lee Hood, Preston Hood, Bobby Hood and Ray Hood; three sisters, Hattie Mae Hood, Betty Jean Hood and Mabel Ferguson.

Mrs. Horton was retired from Singer Furniture and attended Hoods Chapel Church.

Survivors include one son, Benny Hood of Lenoir; three sisters, Gladys White, Charlotte Hood and Faye Ferguson, all of Lenoir; granddaughter, Catonna Moore; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Bishop Philmore Hester. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at her sister’s residence at 2083 Tate Place, Lenoir. Serving as pallbearers will be nephews and flower bearers will be nieces.
