Johnny Phillips, 71, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born in Caldwell County on December 22, 1941, to the late James Wilburn Phillips and Nancy Ellen Hurley Phillips.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Lora Ann Hoyle and husband, Chris of Lenoir; sons, Michael Phillips and Terry Pritchard of Lenoir; grandchildren, Billy Phillips, Kristy Hoyle, Ethan Hoyle, Iva Pritchard, Jason Pritchard, and Beth Pritchard.

The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Friday, April 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at Nazareth Advent Christian Church on Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ronnie Pritchard officiating.

Bobby McCaskill (has photo)

Bobby Lee McCaskill, 50, of Hudson, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte.

Mr. McCaskill was born Sept. 24, 1962, in Catawba County to the late Bobby Connard Bumgarner and Lee Ellen Mashburn Bumgarner.

He was the owner of Superior Roofing for 20 years and co-owner of Superior Spas “Your Backyards Specialist.” He was a former member ofthe Hudson Jaycees and of the Marquis Spas Dealer Advisory Board.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Karen Gantt McCaskill of Hudson; his daughters, Chanda LaRae McCaskill Schwartz and husband Eric of Hickory, and Christina Lea McCaskill of Hudson; his brothers, Marvin Wesley McCaskill and Jimmy Dean McCaskill, both of Lenoir.

Funeral Services for Mr. McCaskill will be held Friday, April 12, at 4 p.m.in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Anna Merritt officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. prior to the service.

Serving as pallbearers are Scott Propst, Kevin Carver, David O’Brien, Todd Mitcham, Mike Davis and Tracy Woody.

Joseph Columbus “Joe” Hoyle, 85, of Sharon Avenue NW, Lenoir, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care—Lenoir.  He was born July 29, 1927, in Cleveland County to the late Emory L. Hoyle and Minnie Crow Hoyle.  Three sisters, Margaret Hoyle Correll, Betty Hoyle Kincaid and Evelyn Hoyle Bailey, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Esther Cresson Hoyle of the home; two sons, Dr. David E. Hoyle and wife Jan of Chapel Hill, and Joseph L. “Joey” Hoyle and wife Virginia of Lenoir; six grandchildren, Dr. Joseph Hoyle and wife Betsy of Richmond, Jonathan Hoyle and wife Laura of Durham, Dr. Stephen Hoyle and wife Carrie of Puerto Rico, Anne Han and husband Stephen of Durham, Joseph Lee Hoyle Jr. of Taylorsville, and Sarah Margaret Hoyle of Lenoir; and four great-grandchildren, Emma Claire Hoyle, Elleree Grace Hoyle, Abby Elizabeth Hoyle, and Everett Jonathan Hoyle. Joe was a graduate of Lenoir High School and Mars Hill College. For nearly 50 years Mr. Hoyle co-owned and operated City Service Cleaners in Lenoir. After retirement, Joe and his son enjoyed working at Affordable Furniture in Whitnel for over 20 years.

Joe was a United States Navy Veteran. Prior to that, he served as a sergeant in the N.C. Home Guard and later in the N.C. State Guard. He was a member of the Naval Reserves. Mr. Hoyle was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church, serving as deacon and active in the Brotherhood organization. He started several outreach projects for homeless men. He co-founded the Caldwell Prison Ministry over 40 years ago. Joe served in the Caldwell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was an active Gideon. 

Interment will be private with full military honors. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at College Avenue Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Charles R. Brawley. The family will receive friends following the service. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Randy Greene, Howard Jenkins, David Jetton, Brent Kincaid, Curtis Moore, Tom Parsons, Bob Suddreth, Justin White and James Wilfong.

Craig Allen “Willie” Tolleson went to be with the Lord, April 8, 2013. A celebration of life will be held Friday, April 12, at 6 p.m. at Bethel Colony. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Colony, 1675 Bethel Colony Road, Lenoir, NC 28645. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home in charge.

Aileen Corpening

Aileen E. Corpening, 79, of Granite Falls went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. She was born April 3, 1934, in Caldwell County. She was the daughter of the late Edward Dula and Margaret Ann Simmons Dula. Ms. Corpening was a member of member of Concord Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for over 40 years.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Thomas Corpening, two sisters, Iris Bumgarner and Janie Cline, and one brother, Bobby Dula

She is survived by her three nieces and caregivers, Patti, Gwynda and Debbie. She is also survived by several other nieces and nephews.

A Graveside service will be held Friday, April 12, at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest Cemetery in Granite Falls with the Rev. Wayne White officiating.
