Amos Rutherford, 100, of Lenoir was called home to his Lord and Savior on April 17, 2014. He was born on March 15, 1914, to the late Arthur and Emaline Rutherford in Burke County. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife of 15 years, Clara Mae Perkins-Rutherford; brothers, James Arthur, Lee, William and Raymond; sisters, Ila, Martha, Jeneiva, Winnie, Sadie, Beulah and Robbie Avery; and two stepchildren, Herman Dixon and Sharon Jo Perkins-Chapman.
Amos was a member of Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. He was a faithful member of Harper /Witherspoon American Legion Post #231. Amos served in the US Army from 1942-1946. He worked at Mullis Motor Company in Morganton for a short while, before going to work at Esso /Exxon Service Station at Smith Crossroads with his longtime friend Don Campbell for 30 years.
Amos leaves to mourn his sister, Nora Rutherford-Connelly of Detroit, Mich.; stepchildren, Herschel “Jimmy” Dixon, Mary Lambert, the Rev. James (Florence) Perkins, Florence Corpening, Charles (Linda) Perkins and Sandra Stinson; 15 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m until 2 p.m.; the Rev. Jimmie Norwood Sr. will be officiating. Burial will follow at Wildwood Cemetery. Ebony Funeral Services of Lenoir will be assisting the family. Sherman Martin, 90, of Morganton died April 21, 2014. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Ebony Funeral Services of Morganton.
Ruby Bivens Lail, 68, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, at Frye Regional. Born March 10, 1946, Mrs. Lail was a daughter of the late John Marshall and Sue Etta Dabbs Bivens and the wife of the late Harold D. Lail.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Bivens Hayes and Betty Jo Bivens Maxwell, and three brothers, George Ray Bivens, Richard Dane Bivens and Thomas Herman Bivens.
Ruby had a love for enjoying God's beautiful creations such as the beach and watching the flowers reach full bloom. Her faith and strong determination has led her thru many years of sickness, and she always gave God the glory for her blessings.
Ruby's grandsons, Colton and Dace, were her daily dose of joy. “Hey, Grandmom, I love you" were her favorite words to hear. She had many dear friends and family, but her best friend was her daughter, Sheila.
Ruby was survived by her daughter, Sheila Lail Kirby and husband Chad, and their two sons, Colton and Dace; one brother, John Bivens of Hendersonville; three sisters, Jean Carpenter of Cherryville, Velda Williams and husband Tommy of Charlotte, and Pat Smith and husband Charles of Lenoir; four sisters-in law, Catherine Hefner, Berlene Jarvis, Sarah Lail, and Mary Teague and husband Richard; one brother-in-law, Buster Lail; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A celebration of Mrs. Lail's life will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Gordon West and the Rev. Donald Ingle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3 until 4 at the church, prior to the service.

Peggy Sue Greer Johnson, 68, of Hudson passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at her residence.
Born Sept. 12, 1945, in Wilkes County, she was the daughter of the late James and Vera Craig Greer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shelly R. Johnson, two sisters, and two brothers.
Survivors include five children, Renee Bobbitt and husband Robert of Hudson, Kim Arnette and husband Jerry of Gamewell, Kenneth Johnson and wife Teresa of Hudson, Randy Johnson and Francis Shukis of Gamewell, and David Johnson and Tanya Hoyle of Hudson; one brother, Jimmie Greer and wife Grace of Hudson; three sisters, Janice Ritch and husband Boone of Boomer, Shirley Johnson and husband Tony of Gamewell, and Opal Killian of Lenoir; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the Bass-Smith Granite Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Bristol officiating. Burial will follow at the Clarke Family Cemetery in Valmead. The family will receive friends two hours prior to services from 12 p.m. unti 2 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Greer, Ritchie Souther, Jerry Arnette, Curtis Arnette, Wesley Arnette, and David Greer.
