Lura Stamey

Mrs. Lura Mae Dishman Stamey, 84, of Granite Falls, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jan. 1, 2013.
She was born July 28, 1928 in Caldwell County, North Carolina to the late Monroe “Puck” Dishman and Lillie Elizabeth Bentley. She was a member of Winkler’s Grove Baptist Church, Hickory, N.C. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Clayton Stamey. She is survived by three daughters, Rita Hardin and husband Jessie of Connelly Springs; Connie Winkler and husband Ronnie of Hickory, N.C.; Patricia Elmore of Lenoir, N.C.; three grandchildren: Tammy Reid, Heather Winkler Parkhurst, and Emma Winkler, and two great grandchildren, Nathan Reid and Korbin Parkhurst.
The funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Winkler’s Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Faulkenbury officiating. Burial will follow at church cemetery. The family will receive friends 2 until 3 p.m. on Friday at the church.

Sarah Amaral

Sarah Rachel “Rai” Boswell Amaral, 73, of Beach Tree Drive, Hudson died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center. She was born April 14, 1939 in Whiteville, N.C. to the late Albert E. and Rosa Lee Ward Boswell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband Ricardo Anthony Amaral and brother Richard Boswell.
Mrs. Amaral was a retired certified physician assistant.
Survivors include sons Lt. Col. Curtis Allen Sauberan and wife Kim of Atlanta, Ga., and Kenneth D. Sauberan and wife Deirdre of Granite Falls; daughter, Diana Sauberan of Hudson; brothers, Larry Boswell and C. R. Carroll Jr., both of San Antonio, Texas; sisters Louise B. Bender of Hudson, Gail B. Davis of Denver, Colorado, Linda Boswell of Whiteville and Carol Ann Carroll of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Amaral conducted by the Rev. Johnny Ethridge.
Interment will follow at a later date in Bay Pines National Cemetery, Clearwater, Fla.

Peggy Craig

Mrs. Peggy Summerow Craig, 74, of Lenoir passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.
Born August 29, 1938 in Caldwell County, Peggy was a daughter of the late Haywood and Elizabeth “Betty” Cardwell. Peggy enjoyed going to yard sales and auctions. She was a cafeteria worker in the Caldwell County Schools system for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Bruce A. Craig of the home; a stepdaughter, Robin Carswell and husband Eddie of Gamewell; a stepson, Robert Hamby of Lenoir; a very special niece, Lisa Young and husband Matt of Granite Falls; one sister, Hazel Freeman of Hudson; grandchildren Kaylin Carswell and Cody Hamby; and her faithful pets, Smokey and Trixie. Peggy is also survived by numerous other relatives.
A graveside celebration of Peggy’s life will be held on Friday, Jan. 4, 2012 at 10 a.m., at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir.

Hershel Kell

Mr. Hershel Lee Kell, 79, passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 at Camelot Manor Nursing Care. He was born in East Prairie, Mo. on July 27, 1933 to the late James (Jack) Owen Kell and Minnie Whitlock Kell. He was married to Lena Gulley Kell of the residence. He left East Prairie when he was a teenager and opened up a newspaper stand; he later he went to school to learn the ministry. He lived in Hudson for more than 40 years.
Mr. Kell was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Marjorie Stamey Kell, 5 brothers, 1 sister and 1 grandchild.
Other than his wife, he is survived by his stepchildren, Ruby McRary; Roger Stamey and wife, Jean; Edna Mae Blair and husband Joe; a sister, Shirley Edelstein and husband Milton of Carmel, NY; brothers Carroll Kell and wife Eleanor of Farmingham, Mass., and Paul Kell of Richland, Mo.; eight step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren, and six step-great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mr. Kell’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at noon with Pastor Buford Pennell and Pastor Wade Mitchell officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in Church on the Rock Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon prior to the service.

Travis Greene Sr.

Travis Dale Greene Sr., 63, of Connelly Springs died Monday Dec. 31, 2012 at Catawba Regional Hospice following a courageous battle with cancer.  A graveside service will be held Wednesday January 2, 2013 at 11 a.m., at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Lenoir with the Rev. Kevin Knight

Kevin Douglas Anthony Knight, 63, of Lenoir went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 29 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a brief illness.
Kevin was born June 3, 1949 in Lenoir to O.K. Jack Knight and Jeanne Knight. He moved to California as a child, then to Arizona and Texas before returning to Lenoir.
Kevin was preceded in death by his father and mother; his brother, Jack Knight; and grandparents Oscar and Kate Knight. Surviving Kevin are his daughters, Michelle (Marlon,son-in-law) Grier, Christine Knight (Jon Dubose, future son-in-law) and son Daniel Knight; his grandchildren, Chelsie Knight, Jamal Grier, Alexis Knight and Christiaan McBryde; his sister, Kate Carrasco of Tecopa, California; his brother, Carl Knight (Kathy sister-in-law), Bette Knight (stepmother) and many nieces and nephews.
Kevin enjoyed nature, kayaking, hiking, playing basketball and many activities involving his grandchildren, family and friends. Kevin was a devoted grandfather. He was known for his photography, book and love of the Wilson Creek area. Kevin was a tool and dye maker by trade but in his later years worked for Comfort Inn. He was well known for his gentle, calm selfless nature and will be deeply missed by many.
Funeral services will be held at The Life Center, 1925 Valway Road, Lenoir on Saturday, January 5, 2012 at 1 p.m. Receiving of friends will begin at noon before the funeral service. Scattering of the remains will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a trust fund for Kevin’s son, Daniel Knight, through the N.C. State Employee Credit Union. As the family has recently moved, condolences be sent to them through The Life Center.

Billy Suddreth

Billy Dale Suddreth, 74 of Granite Falls diedWednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at Clover Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Childers officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Clover Baptist Church prior to the service. Bass-Smith Granite is serving the family of Billy Dale Suddreth.

Mary Nell Moore

Mary Nell Thompson Moore (“Mary Nell”), 87, of Lenoir, N.C., and Charlotte, N.C., died at her residence at the Carriage Club in Charlotte on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. Mary Nell was born in Lenoir on May 27, 1925, a daughter of Charles Henderson Thompson and Ursula Hood Thompson.
Mary Nell was a 1946 cum laude graduate of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, she moved to Atlanta, Ga., where she was employed by Delta Airlines. She returned to Lenoir and married Myron Lenoir (“Jack”) Moore Jr., in 1949, to whom she was married for 63 years until his death in 2012.
Mary Nell was a homemaker and a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Lenoir, where she was a president of the United Methodist Women and for many years taught the 4-year-old Sunday School class. She was a sustaining member of the Lenoir Service League and was also a member of the Hibriten Garden Club, the Wise and Otherwise Book Club, the Brush and Palette Club and several bridge clubs.
In addition to her husband, Mary Nell is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Agnes Ruth Thompson and Mabel Thompson Moore, and her son-in-law Steven Calvin Walker. She is survived by her three children, Rebecca Moore Walker of Greensboro, Jane Moore Goeldner and her husband, Kirk Allan Goeldner, of Greenville, S.C., and Myron Lenoir Moore III, and his wife, Cynthia Speas of Charlotte, N.C.; her six grandchildren, Steven Williams Walker and his wife, Susan McAllister Walker of Charlotte, N.C., Wesley Gordon Clarke and his wife, Christy Davison Clarke of Greenville, S.C., John McDowell Moore of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Kirk Goeldner of New York, N.Y., Sarah Katherine Moore of New York, N.Y., and William Robbins Moore of Charleston, S.C.; and her four great-grandchildren, Katherine McAllister Walker and Elizabeth Moore Walker of Charlotte and Holden Johns Clarke and Bennett Davison Clarke of Greenville, S.C.
A graveside service will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Park, 2017 Wilkesboro Boulevard, Lenoir, NC, on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Marietta Smith. The family will receive at the graveside following the service.
