Bernice Yount

Bernice Kincaid Yount, 82, of Lenoir, N.C., answered the call of the Lord on Thursday, January 3, 2013 while at Hospice in Hudson, N.C.
She was born May 4, 1930 in Burke County to the late Lester Kincaid and Eloise Corpening Kincaid. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall “Booster” Yount Jr., brothers Cliff Kincaid, Levon Kincaid and Clyde Kincaid; and sisters Vina Sue Bryson and Thelma Johnson.
She was a lifelong member of St. Paul AME Church for more than 60 years where she was an active member of the Missionary Society and other church auxiliaries. She retired from employment with the City of Lenoir following 22 years of service.
Survivors include daughters Barbara (Samuel) Yount Love of Fort Washington, Md.; and Beverly (Bowen) Yount Wakefield of Matthews, N.C.; adopted daughter Doretha Carson of Hickory, N.C.; granddaughters Lindsey Nicole Love and Brittany Marsha Wakefield; sister Shirley (Charles T.) Horton of Morganton, N.C.; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and cherished friends.
Funeral services are scheduled to be held on Monday, January 7, 2013 at noon at St. Paul AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Byron J. Grayson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 11-11:55 a.m., at the church prior to the services.
Burial will follow services at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Howard Hawkins

Dr. W. Howard Hawkins, 85, of Burke County went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jan. 2, 2013. He was born April 17, 1927 in McDowell County, N.C., to the late William Crawford Hawkins and Barbara Alice Mashburn. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Pulaski, Va.
Howard was well known for sharing the gospel and during his ministry he was a devoted pastor for approximately 53 years. He served at Cedar Rock Baptist, Yadkin Valley Baptist, Trinity Baptist in Virginia, Lakeview Baptist and other churches in the Longview Community of N.C., Flat Rock, Michigan, and Pembrook, Va. He was fortunate to go on mission trips to South Africa and Brazil. He has had the privilege of baptizing and marrying numerous people and comforting many who have lost loved ones. He will be deeply missed, but his life will be celebrated because of his “Home-going.”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosa Lee Houk Hawkins; his two sons, Baby Boy Hawkins and Teddy Ross Hawkins; his second wife, Maudie Hodge Hawkins; two brothers, Virgil Hawkins and Glenn Hawkins; two sister, Mae Jenkins and Hazel Craig.
He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Renee Smart and her husband Troy Smart of Lenoir; sons Gerald Lee Hawkins and his wife Delores of Bethlehem, N.C., William Earl Hawkins of High Point, N.C. and the Rev. Phillip Kirk Hawkins and his wife Nicci of Lenoir, N.C.; son Ted Hodge and his wife Carol; daughter Mona Conrad and her husband David, all from Virginia; two brothers, Wayne Hawkins and wife Betty, Ray Hawkins and wife Doris; two sisters, Margie Riley, Bonnie and husband Ron; a daughter in law, Vanessa Hawkins; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Lakeview Baptist Church, located at 325 Shasta Lane, Lenoir, N.C.  The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m., prior to service at Lakeview. The Rev. Ron Burgett, the Rev. Robert Brown and the Rev. Daren Smart will be officiating the funeral, and the Rev. Jesse Crooks will be officiating at the graveside. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church Building Fund in lieu of flowers.

Earl Nichols

Earl J. Nichols, of Tampa Way, Lenoir died Friday, January 4, 2013 at the residence. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Prewitt

Mr. Harold Wayne Prewitt, 73,of Morganton completed his journey on earth on January 5, 2013 and began his new life in Heaven with his Lord and Savior and loved ones that have gone on before.
Harold was born on July 14, 1939 in Burke County, a son of the late Marvin V. and Alda M. Prewitt. He was a lifelong member of Zion Memorial United Methodist Church. Harold dearly loved gospel music and his church.
During his life here on Earth, he served many years as chief of the Triple Community Fire Dept. and retired from the City of Morganton as fire chief. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, as well as his many friends. Harold loved socializing at Bud’s Corner Kitchen, Star Light Fish Camp and Timberwoods Restaurant.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Jerry D. Prewitt, Ben H. McNeely and son-in-law Frank Stikeleather.
Those left to cherish his memory are son David Prewitt and fiancee’ Debbie Setzer of Morganton, and daughter Rhonda P. Stikeleather of Hickory. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Joshua Stikeleather, Kaitlyn Prewitt, Morgan Prewitt Green (Jamie) and Heather Prewitt; great-grandchildren, Xander Stikeleather, Nolan Greene and other close family, Bruce and Arlene B. Webb, Caleb Coffey and Chelsea Belton.
Funeral services for Harold W. Prewitt will be held at 3 p.m., Monday January 7, 2013 at Zion Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. George Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m., Monday at Zion Memorial United Methodist Church.

Thelma Potter

Thelma Marie Potter Miller, 86, of Fairview Drive, SW, Lenoir died Friday, January 4, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care - Lenoir. She was born April 19, 1926 in Watauga County to the late John O. and Cora Reese Potter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roby Earl Miller; a son, Cecil T. Miller; a daughter, Melinda Brown; seven brothers; and four sisters.
Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and a member of Lenoir Church of Christ. She was owner and operator of a daycare center for the past 10 years.
Survivors include sons, Roby John Miller of Newton, Earldean Miller of Morganton, Glenn F. Miller and Keith A. Miller, both of Lenoir; one daughter, Wilma Bryant of Ferguson; one brother, Barton Potter of Granite Falls; a sister, Juanita Hammons of Hickory; 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Lenoir Church of Christ conducted by Tony Sanders. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Potter’s Family Cemetery in Pottertown.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

Leona Wilson

Mrs. Lowe Wilson, 93, died Friday, January 4, 2013. Services will be held at Pinecrest Cemetery at 3 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2013, with the Rev. Lonny McSherley officiating. Denise Martin

Denise Goble Martin, 60, of Spencer Heights Place, Lenoir died Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. She was born June 11, 1952, in Caldwell County to Bobby and Christine Winkler Goble of Lenoir.
Mrs. Martin was employed with Caldwell County Government and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Michael  L. “Mike” Martin of the home; and one sister, Mrs. Cathy Goble Taylor and husband Ron of Lenoir.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Fleming’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Dr.  Scott M. Shoffner.

Howard Barnes

The Rev. Howard G. Barnes, 90, of Serenity Lane, Granite Falls died Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born September 19, 1922 in Watauga County to the late Marion G. and Margaret Hodges Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Homer M. Barnes.
The Rev. Barnes was a Baptist minister. He graduated from Gardner Webb Junior College and Fruitland Bible School. He did 51 years of pastoral service, including Calvary Baptist Church in Mars Hill, N.C., Southside Baptist Church in Morganton, Phaniels Baptist Church in Rowan County, and retired after 20 years at Baton Baptist Church.
He was a United States World War II veteran stationed in Italy. Battles and campaigns include Rome Arno, Po Valley, Southern France, Northern France, Rhineland Air Combat Balkans, Air Offensive Europe, American Theater Campaign Medal, Eamet Campaign Medal with seven bronze service stars, distinguished unit badge with one service star and victor medal.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marline Hodges Barnes of the home; a son, the Rev. Terry M. Barnes and wife V.R. of Lenoir; a daughter, Mrs. Sherry Sipe and husband Ralph of Granite Falls; one brother, Harold B. Barnes of Florida; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 7, 2013 at noon at First Baptist Church of Hudson conducted by the Rev. R. Mack Jarvis, III and the Rev. Wade Dellinger. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until noon prior to the service at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Jerry Crump, Jerry Greene, Don Austin, Bob Knight, Russell Colvard and Ted Alley.

John Shade

Mr. John Howard Shade, 69, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice. Mr. Shade was born in Caldwell County on August 16, 1943 to the late Latt Shade and Annie Corpening Shade.
He was a beloved cousin to Irma Dula of Charlotte and a host of other cousins.
A celebration of Mr. Shade’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 3 p.m.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m., until 3 p.m., prior to the service.
