Chloma Ruth Yount, 94, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
Mrs. Yount was born in Watauga County to the late Wade and Margaret Lowrence. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Yount, and a grandson, Kenny Ford.
She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Sunrise Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, JoAnn Cannon and fiance Eddie Johnson of Lenoir, Emma Franklin and husband Lee of Jonas Ridge, and Ruth Nelson and husband Paul of Lenoir; grandchildren, Donnarae Ford of Fleetwood, Paula Braswell of Charlotte, Michael Braswell and wife Phyllis of Hudson, Scott Braswell of Lenoir, and Leeann Freeman and husband Dean of Jonas Ridge; great grandchildren, Joshua Ford of Hickory and Zachary Freeman of Jonas Ridge; and a sister, Polly Edge of Hickory.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 9, at Sunrise Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Edd Warren officiating. The family will receive at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home Saturday at 1 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Eddie Johnson, Michael Braswell, Scott Braswell, Dean Freeman, Zachary Freeman, Joshua Ford and an alternate, David Phillips.

Curtis Lee Kunkle, 49, of Marion Center, Pa., died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, in Marion Center as a result of injuries sustained from a vehicle accident.
He was born Dec. 24, 1963, in New Delhi, India, and was a son of Bonnie (Fulmer) Kunkle, Marion Center, and the late Fred L. Kunkle, who died June 20, 2011.
Curt was a 1981 graduate of Penns Manor Area High School. Following high school he served in the U.S. Navy. He later enrolled in the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, where he graduated in 1992 with a diploma in Mortuary Science. He was formerly employed by the Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home in Lenoir.
Curt was an avid outdoorsman. He loved bow hunting and being in the woods. He especially looked forward to going to the Possum Pen Hunting Camp. In addition to his love of the outdoors, Curt cherished the time he had with his family and friends. He was a loving father and grandfather and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In addition to his mother, Bonnie, he is survived by his sons: Kurtis Lee Kunkle and wife Jamie of Norfolk, Va.; Zachary Tyler Kunkle and wife Morgan of Lenoir. His three grandchildren are Connor and Kaleb Kunkle of Norfolk, Va., and Wyatt Kunkle of Lenoir. He is also survived by his brother, Luke Kunkle of Indiana, Pa., and his siss, Micki Dobrosky.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred; infant sister, Katrina Kunkle; paternal grandparents, Floyd and Bernice Kunkle; and maternal grandparents, Jay and Evelyn Fulmer.
Friends will be received Friday evening, March 8, from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Clymer. A second visitation will be held Saturday from 10 until 11 a.m. His funeral service will begin at 11 o’clock, following the visitation hour at the funeral home. Pastor Calvin Duvall will officiate. Nelia Nelson McCall, 68, of Indian Court, Lenoir, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Carolinas Specialty Hospital in Charlotte. She was born July 5, 1944, in Watauga County to the late Thomas C. and Connie Barnette Nelson.
Ms. McCall worked for American Efird Mills and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her special companion of 30 years, Grady H. Mangum Sr. of the home; son, William Leonard McCall Jr. of Lenoir; two daughters, Lisa M. Powell of Lenoir and Teresa McCall Keener of Hudson; brother, Thomas Nelson; sisters, Sarah Everhardt of Granite Falls, Christine Woodruff of Rutherford College and Sadie Moore of Moravian Falls; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Raymond Spann. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be: William McCall Jr., Ted Keener, Jesse Simmons, Grady Mangum Jr., Mike Bowman and Jason Bowman.

Ruth Price Sleppy, 95, of Miami, Fla., formerly of Caldwell County, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the University of Miami Hospital.
There will be no services held for Mrs. Sleppy. Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home is serving the family of Ruth Price Sleppy.

Nancy Joann Hice Ross, 60, of Morganton died Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Nancy was born in Catawba County on March 28, 1952, and was the daughter of the late Howard Hice Sr. and Toyie Lee Bumgarner Hice. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne R. Ross, and by a brother, Terry Lee Hice.
She graduated from Granite Falls High School and earned an A.A.S. degree in Business from Caldwell Community College. While a student at CCC, Nancy was named to Who’s Who in America’s Junior Colleges. Her career was spent at Chesterfield Elementary School, where she was a major part of the school for many years and was named Teacher Assistant of the Year several times. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.
A loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, teacher and friend, she leaves to cherish her memory her sons, David Wayne Ross and his wife, Heather, and Brian A. Ross and his wife, Katie, all of Morganton; her grandchildren, Joshua Wayne Ross, Abigayle Rae Ross, Natalie Joann Ross and Destiny Silvers; her brothers, Howard C. Hice Jr. and wife Jenny, and Roger Bumgarner and wife Cindy, all of Hudson; and a number of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Correll officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Sossoman Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour. Grady Stephen Mathes, 72, of Resaca Street, Lenoir, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born Jan. 26, 1941, in Caldwell County to the late Russell and Mamie Moore Mathes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Dula Mathes, and a brother, Howard Mathes.
Mr. Mathes worked for Bernhardt Furniture and was a member of Little Rock AME Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Danielle Mathes of the home; one brother, Edward Mathes of Collettsville; one sister, Maggie Mathes Corpening of Lenoir; and one granddaughter, Latoria Estella Mathes.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 10, at 5 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Mary Lloyd and Pastor Samuel Patterson.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Rocco Montalto (with photo)
Mr. Rocco Anthony “Rocky” Montalto, 81, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Born Sept. 30, 1931, in Stamford, Conn., he was a son of the late Joseph and Rose Altamore Montalto.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Montalt,o who passed away in 2005
Rocky graduated from Stamford High School and retired from the city of Stamford, Conn., after 20 years of service. He came to live in Caldwell County in 1986. For the last five years, Rocky has lived at Brockford Inn in Granite Falls.
On behalf of the family, we would like to thank Bennett and Gay Helton for their kindness through their visits and care since Rocky moved to Caldwell County.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Pansy Montalto of Hickory.
A celebration of “Rocky’s” life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 8, in the chapel of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Pastor Bennett Helton officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Mr. Carl Pete Houck, 84, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Born April 2, 1928, in Johnson County, Tenn., he was a son of the late Estel and Ada Houck, and was married for 67 years to Hilda Cozort Houck of the home. Mr. Houck was retired from Kincaid Furniture.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Gloria Houck Thomas.
In addition to his wife, he survived by his daughter, Geneva Woods, and her husband; grandchildren, Kenneth “K.T.” Thomas, Buddy Nolan Carson and Chastity Stewart; great-grandchildren, Spencer Thomas, Maria McKenzie Lopez, Trey Carson, Noah Roman Lopez, and Natalie Carson.
The funeral service for Mr. Houck will be held at Community Baptist Church on Sunday, March 10, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Waitsel Beard officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in Laurel Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 prior to the service.
