Michael Hatley

Michael Jackson Hatley, 63, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at his residence in Lenoir. Jack was born in Watauga County on April 27, 1950, to the late Robert Edward Hatley and Mattie Coeburn Hatley. He was married to Ira Lea Bristol Hatley.

Jack was a loving father, PawPaw and friend who enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Hatley, and brother, Dale Hatley.

Other than his wife he is survived by his children, Bobby Hatley and wife Debbie, Rachel Watts, Jeanette Carlton, Jackie Clark and husband David, and Jennifer Shelton and husband Tommy; sisters, Greta Ecret, Carlene Wood and husband David, Aileen Brown, and Wanda Townsend and husband Jerry; brothers, Donald Hatley and wife Shirley, and Doug Hatley and wife Eileen; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dennis Coeburn and Russell Coeburn, who were always there for Jack.

A memorial service will be held at Welcome Home Baptist Church on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Alden Wheeler and Pastor Brian Gragg officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 prior to the service.

Danny Camp

Danny William Camp, 44, of Old Morganton Road, Lenoir, joined his father and grandfather in the Heavenly Fishing and Hunting Club on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. Right up until the end, he fought the pancreatic and liver cancer that invaded his body. He was born Feb. 10, 1969, in Caldwell County to Doris Keller Camp of Hudson and the late Otis William Camp. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Otis M. and Carolyn Steadman Camp; his maternal grandparents, Willard M. Keller and Sarah Campbell Keller Boudreau; and a nephew, Benjamin Camp.

Besides hunting and fishing, Danny loved history (the Civil War, World War II airplanes), studying herbs, eating hot peppers, cooking, family get-togethers, and his favorite villain, Darth Vader, from the "Star Wars" movies. One of the greatest joys of his life was music. He played the clarinet in two bands – the Harper Concert Band of Lenoir and the Watauga Community Band of Boone. He thoroughly enjoyed playing in concerts and seeing the audience enjoying the music.

In addition to his mother, those left to remember his love, kindness and sense of humor are his wife, Denise Kirby Camp of the home; brother, James Reed Camp and wife Crystal of Hudson; aunts, Kay Bradley and husband Gary of Granite Falls, Katherine C. Jordan of Hendersonville; and Gwendolyn C. Miller of Hudson; along with an uncle, Hollis Campbell of Granite Falls. Others who will remember his smile include his wife’s family members, with whom he had a great relationship, various cousins, nieces, nephews, fellow musicians in the Harper and Watauga bands, and his dog, Shade.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Rick Bowman. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Connor, April Hall, Carolyn Henderson, Bryson Kirby, Michael Kirby, Alan Moore, Micah Nix and Mo Noriega.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Nellie Hardwick

Nellie Horton Hardwick, 93, of Jonesboro, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale, Georgia.

Mrs. Hardwick was born in Wilkes County to the late Avery Horton and Bessie Hackett Horton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her husband, Frank Hardwick; one son, George Fern Horton; a brother, Edward Henderson Horton; and a grandson, Franklin Mitchell Jr. Nellie was a Wilkes County School graduate, retired hospital custodian and a member of the St. Paul AME church prior to moving to New York and becoming a member of the Greater St. Luke AME church for over 50 years.

Mrs. Hardwick leaves with loving memories of one son, Avery Clyde Horton of Laytown; a daughter, Janice Horton Mitchell and husband Franklin of McDonough, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Philip, Michael, Lemuel, Queen, Avery Jr., Ann, Amy, April, and Alice; one sister, Marie P. McKoy of Lenoir; and a daughter-in-law, Geneva Horton.

A funeral service for Mrs. Hardwick will be held Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, in Pendry’s Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Byron J. Grayson officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m.

Marion Washburn

Marion Close Washburn, 89, of Westminster Circle, Lenoir, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice of Lenoir. She was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Elmira, N.Y., to the late Julion and Clara Bolton Close. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald O. Washburn; and brother, Raymond Close.

Mrs. Washburn was a homemaker and a member of St. James Episcopal Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Karen W. Brumfield and husband Robert of Lenoir; one brother, James E. Close of Elmira, NY; granddaughter, Kimberly S. Sines; and great-granddaughter, Sara Sines.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church conducted by Father Mike Cogsdale.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Allie Mae Icard Glover, 62, of Hudson passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory.

Bobby Dean George, 62, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at his residence.
