Mary Davis

Mary Idelle McLemore Davis, 100, of Statesville passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Claire Bridge of Statesville.

Mrs. Davis was born Sept. 1, 1913, in Cabarrus County and was the daughter of the late Daniel Walter and Mattie Gay McLemore.

She was a graduate of Davidson High School and she attended Davidson College, Winthrop College and Coker College. Mrs. Davis was the pianist for First Baptist Church in Dillon, S.C., and a bookkeeper for Belk Stores in Dillon, where she met her husband, William Young Davis, whom she married on Aug. 3, 1941. She was a homemaker and devoted mother to four children, who survive.

Mrs. Davis and her husband were longtime members of First Baptist Church in Statesville. Mr. Davis was on the building committee for the new church in the 1950s, which is now located on Davie Avenue. Mr. Davis died in 1991.

Mrs. Davis was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Statesville Woman’s Club.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by four children, William Young Davis Jr. of Kings Mountain, Gay Davis Connolly Suther of Statesville, Harry McLemore Davis (Lisa) of Boone, and Clell Thomas Davis of Lenior. She is also survived by five grandchildren, James Thomas Connolly Jr., (Tammy) of Winston-Salem, Neal P. Connolly (Elisa) of Statesville, Carrington Brown (Jason) of Boone, Alison Beal (Andrew) of Wake Forest, and Samantha LeGrand (Cameron) of Concord, along with 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Davis will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel in Statesville with the Rev. Kyle Goodman officiating. The family will visit with friends from 1 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625, or to Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.

Terry Ward

Terry Preston Ward, 55, of Cheshire, Conn., entered into rest on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. For over 20 years he was the devoted husband and father of Karen Kinchla Ward and Preston Kendall Ward.

Terry was born on Oct. 22, 1958, in Fayetteville, N.C., son of the late Clifford Zane and Eunella Eggers Ward. He and his family moved to Charleston, S.C. Terry was predeceased by his older brother Randy Ward, and is survived by his eldest brother, Timothy Zane Ward of Savannah, Ga. He leaves family in North Carolina and many friends in Charleston, S.C.

Terry attended Baptist College and the University of South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree. He then worked as a Parole and Probation Officer in South Carolina. In 1996, Terry and his family relocated to North Branford, Conn., and he was employed with the State of Connecticut as a Support Enforcement Officer. They then moved to Cheshire, Conn., where they have been residents since 1999. He and Karen are active members of the Christ Community Church in Cheshire.

A Celebration of Terry's Life will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St., Cheshire CT 06410. Ola Fletcher

Ola Gay Fletcher, 86, of Lenoir passed away on Sunday March 30, 2014, at her residence following a period of declining health.

Ola Gay was born on June 1, 1927, in Buchanan County, Va., to the late George and Effie Breeding. She enjoyed vacationing with her family and feeding and watching birds.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie and Clyde Breeding.

Survivors include her daughter, Regina Dawkins and husband Eric of the home; two sons, Gerald and Mickey Fletcher, both of Honaker, Va.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Shirley Owens of Hurt, Va., and Linda Church of Davenport, Va., several nieces and nephews, and caregivers Marilyn Clark of Conover and Brenda Coffey of Lenoir.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday April 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Life Celebration Center of Cornerstone Cremation Funeral Celebrations, Lenoir with the Rev. Charlie Crump officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at Cornerstone Cremation Funeral Celebration.

Lois McRary

Lois Livingston McRary, 85, of Taylorsville Road, Lenoir, died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Gateway Nursing Center. She was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Wilkes County to the late Mattie Livingston. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Frank McRary; son, Jeff McRary; brother, Perry Livingston; and sister, Letha L. White.

Mrs. McRary was a 1945 graduate of Oak Hill High School and faithful member of Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Dorothy M. Herman and husband Brad of Lenoir; daughter-in-law, Libby McRary of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Beth H. Shore, Jenny H. Blevins and husband Brian, Jeb McRary, and William Everett McRary; two great-grandchildren, David Everett Shore and Henry Charles Blevins; sister-in-law, Dessie M. Dolinger and husband Ancel of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; and numerous beloved Livingston cousins.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Myron Davis. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Bernice Hopkins

Bernice Scott Boyce Hopkins, formerly of Lenoir, went home to be with her Lord on March 12, 2014. Born Aug. 28, 1922, she moved to California in 1973. She had 11 children. Interment was held March 18 at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside, Calif.

Wendell Nichols

Wendell Edward Nichols, 83, of Blowing Rock Blvd., Lenoir, died Monday, March 31, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born April 14, 1930, in Shady Valley, Tenn., to the late David G. and Fannie Spears Nichols. He was raised in Wilkes County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sons, Harold E. Nichols, Larry W. Nichols, Billy Q. Nichols and Gary G. Nichols; two daughters, Brenda Parson and Sheila Locklear; one grandson, Floyd Earp; three brothers, Charles Nichols, McKinley Nichols and Arthur Nichols; and four sisters, Mae Huffman, Mary Watson, Dora Smith and Carrie B. Eller.

Mr. Nichols was retired from Singer Furniture and was a member of Nelson’s Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, C. Keith Nichols and wife Susan of Lenoir; one daughter, Darlena N. Smith and husband Randy of Chesterfield; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Nelson’s Chapel Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Summerlin. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Wilburn Brittain

Wilburn Brittain, 86, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, at Brockford Inn. He was born on April 7, 1927, son of the late Shuping Alexander and Delia Berry Brittain. Mr. Brittain served his country in the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by both wives, Faye Bolick Brittain and Shirley Woods Brittain; four brothers, Hubert A. Brittain, George Henry Brittain, J.G. Joshua Brittain, and Sanford Pinkney Brittain; three sisters, Viola Myrtle Bryant, Junie Arthelia Spann, and Octia Izettia Miller; granddaughter, Katherine Louise Brittain; and great-grandson, Eli John Brittain.

He is survived by three sons, Mitchell and wife Laura Brittain, Dennis and wife Jodie Brittain, and Ronnie Brittain; two brothers, Vance Levi Brittain and Norris Russell Brittain; grandchildren, Annie Johnson, Ben and wife Jenny Brittain, Ariel Ruff, Clinton and wife Michelle Brittain, Steve Brittain, Matt and wife Katrina Brittain; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Baton United Methodist Church with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. The Rev. Allen Boliek and the Rev. Keith Bowman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Military Honors will be rendered by Disabled American Veterans Chapters 6 and 84.
