James Roberts Sr.

James “Jim”Benton Roberts Sr. passed away Aug. 12, 2013. Born Nov. 21, 1923, in West Palm Beach, Fla., to Mary Rice and Martin Smith Roberts, he attended Georgia Military Academy. He served in the U.S. Air Force in WWII, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. While stationed at Pope Field he met and married Mary Phyllis Vreeland, and they had 63 wonderful years together before her death in 2010. He earned an accounting degree at American University in Washington, D.C., worked for the National Science Foundation and later HEW, ending his government career as the Deputy Commissioner of Education, where he was a strong proponent of Vocational Education in high schools. Retiring, he worked as a management consultant and tax specialist. He traveled with his beloved wife as a member and officer of the Booster’s Club of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and was a Registered Parliamentarian with the National and Virginia Associations of Parliamentarians, serving as secretary. From his youth choir on, he was active in the Episcopal Church, at St. Patricks in Falls Church, Va., as Sr. Warden at St. Barnabas in Annandale, Va., and at St. Margaret’s in Waxhaw. He enjoyed golf and was on the boards of White Oaks and International Town and Country Clubs in Falls Church and Fairfax, was the Director of the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association and was a member of Raintree Country Club in Charlotte. He was a Marshall for years at the Kemper Open and other D.C.-area tournaments. He was a Mason, an Elk and a Boy Scout Leader.

To cherish his memory, Mr. Roberts leaves daughters Cameron Roberts Riddle and husband Joe of Lenoir, and Lauriston Roberts Cramer and husband Ed of Charlotte; son James Benton Roberts Jr. and wife Sibyl of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren Logan Riddle, Kellia Riddle and fiancée John Kidda, Parker Cramer and wife Shannon, Ross Cramer, and Mayra Roberts; nephews and nieces; and his beloved rescue dogs, Star and Minnie, and cat, Callie.

The service celebrating the life of Jim Roberts will be Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Waxhaw. The Rev. Fr. Todd Dill will officiate. Memorials can be made to the Salvation Army, Humane Society, ASPCA or St. Margaret’s Church. Peace and love, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, friend.

Damond Kincaid

Damond Lamont “P-Nut” Kincaid, 31, of 4253 Indiana Ave., Winston-Salem, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, unexpectedly. Mr. Kincaid was born Sept. 20, 1981, in Burke County, the son of John Brent Kincaid of Morganton and Fannie Jean Kincaid of Winston-Salem. He attended Mars Hill AME Church. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Willie Kincaid Sr. and Bessie Johnson Kincaid, and maternal grandfather Spencer Kincaid. Survivors include, in addition to his parents, spouse Reshma Sandy Kincaid of Winston-Salem; son Daymeond J. Kincaid of Winston-Salem; daughters, Emma M. Wynn of Lenoir, and Samara C. George of Winston-Salem; sisters, Shauntel M. Edmondson of Winston-Salem, and Jaszmin McKesson of Winston-Salem; brothers, John Ellis Kincaid of Morganton, and Chad Tyron Kincaid of Ashland, Ky.; grandmother Sarilla Kincaid of Bronx, N.Y.; stepmother Shonda Kincaid of Morganton; brother-in-law Lonnique “Nick” Edmondson of Morganton; two cousins, Keejuan A. Kincaid of Bronx, N.Y., and Andre Kincaid of Lenoir; aunts, uncles, and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at noon at Hartland Church of God, with the Revs. Sarah Springs and Eugene Kincaid officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:55 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. at the church. The burial will be private. Ebony Funeral Services is serving the Kincaid Family. Norma Fair

Norma Jean Fair, 66, of 413 Finley Ave. NW, Lenoir, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, at 3 p.m. at Ebony Funeral Services, Lenoir. The family will receive friends there from 2-2:55 p.m.

Louis Duffey

Louise Laney Duffey, 80, of Granite Falls died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. in the Bass-Smith Granite Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. at Bass-Smith Granite.

Betty Caldwell

Betty Janette Caldwell, 47, of Buttons Lane, Hudson, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at the residence. She was born Jan. 1, 1966, in Letcher County, Ky., to Nancy Stidham May of Hudson and the late Curtis Heron. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Casey Nicole Caldwell.

Mrs. Caldwell was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, James Monroe Caldwell; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Coffee and husband Darrel of Hudson, and Lori Ann Davis of Hudson; brother, Terry Heron of Hudson; one sister, Carla Jean Hilton and husband Charles of Hickory; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gary Reeves.

Mildred Parsons

Mildred “Marie” Hollar Parsons, 82, of Helton Street, Lenoir, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Grace Hospital. She was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Caldwell County to the late Elcaney and Mary Coffey Hollar. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings.

Ms. Parsons was a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ and a devoted mother to her children. She was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Tim Parsons and wife Cindy of Chesterfield, Va.; one daughter, Sheila Lee Parsons of Asheville; one grandson, Jacob Parsons and wife Sarah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. John Gray. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lenard Sullivan

Lenard Sullivan, 87, of Hudson passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Born Sept. 21, 1925, in Caldwell County, Mr. Sullivan was a son of the late William Fred and Bessie Melinda Bryant Sullivan and the husband of Mrs. Margaret Piercy Sullivan of the residence who in October would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Melody Ann Sullivan and Melinda Lee Sullivan Keaton; two sisters, Beatrice Camp and Alice Audrey Sullivan; one half-sister, Dorothy Jean Luttrell; and one brother, Clem Sullivan.

Lenard was a lifetime member of the Mount Herman United Methodist Church, where he was also a Boy Scout leader. He was owner/operator of Sullivan Floor Company for over 60 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, served in Normandy and in Africa. He drove a tank for Gen. George C. Patton.

Lenard was a race car fan and was a member of the Lambert Racing Team Pit Crew. He was a member of the American Legion Post 29, where he was an avid fan of the 29ers baseball team and served as the Team Grandpa of the 2000 State Championship Team.

Surviving other than his wife is his daughter, Ginger Sullivan Day and husband Myron of Hudson; three grandchildren, Josh Day, Mindy Rice, Ashley Keaton Cox; four great-grandchildren, Lane Rice, Kendra Marksberry, Callie Cox, Shelby Lee Cox; and four great-great-grandchildren, Michael Lee Marksberry, Maddox Marksberry, Memphis Marksberry and Alyssa Dawn Ahner. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A celebration of Lenard’s life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church, 2695 Alfred Hartley Road in Lenoir, with Pastor Jenn Hiatt and Pastor Jim Evans officiating. He will lie in state from 2:30 until 3 prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Mount Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Evans Funeral Service in Lenoir.

Pallbearers will be: Bill Piercy, Keith Piercy, Johnny Piercy, Jerry Piercy, Fred Piercy Jr. and Eddie Camp. Honorary Pallbearers will be Diane Parris, Waylene Franklin, Barbara Hart, Yvonne Butner, Ellen Shew and Sarah Wilson.
