Vivian Norris

Vivian “Cricket” Jones Norris, 67, of Lenoir passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Cricket was born in Washington County, Va., to the late Dave Jones and Mary Murray Jones.

Mrs. Norris was a retired furniture worker and a member of Living Water Fellowship Church, where she was in charge of the fellowship hall.

She is also preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Jones; a sister, Mickey Presley; great-grandson Dawson Uhl; and two nephews, Matt Jones and Danny Norris.

Mrs. Norris is survived by her husband, John Norris of the home; a son, John Norris II and Tina of Lenoir; three daughters, Tammy Norris and Wayne Effler of Lenoir, Robin and Tim Jones of Lenoir, Susan and Micheal Mullins of Lenoir; four brothers, Billy Jones of Maryland, Butch Jones of Abingdon, Va., Freddie Jones of Meadowview, Va., and Johnny Jones of Abingdon, Va.; two sisters, Betty Ann King and Sissy Smith of Virginia; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family of Mrs. Norris will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Norris will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Living Water Fellowship Church with the Pastor Mark Moody officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be David Evans, Richie Powell, Micheal Mullins Wayne Effler, Tim Jones and Tim Hartley. Honorary Pallbearers will be Zachary Moody, Johnathan Norris, Caleb Mullins and Ryan Uhl.

James Smith

James “Jim” Corbin Smith, 82, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at his residence. He was born in Caldwell County on June 11, 1931, to the late Albert Stanley Smith and Ida Bolick Smith. He was married to Revonda “Jeane” Cline Smith of the home for 60 years.

Mr. Smith was a loving husband, awesome Dad and PawPaw, and a wonderful friend. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. He was a devoted member of Union Grove Baptist Church where he served as deacon and church greeter for many years. In 1993 he was named Man of the Year.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Wendy Smith; brother, Clyde Smith; and sister, Gladys Greene.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Cathy Hamby, Jeff Smith and wife Teresa, Greg Smith and wife Sue, and Tim Smith; sisters, Nellie Mullinax and husband Wayne, and Mary Turner; brother, Stanley Smith; grandchildren, Christy Deal and husband Aaron, Jenny Anders, Ben Smith and wife Meredith, Jason Smith and wife Christine, Courtney Smith, Justin Smith and wife Jen, Keri Thomas and husband Robby, Zac Smith and wife Kristina, and Meagan Smith; 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mr. Smith’s life will be held at Union Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at 5 p.m. with Pastor Sam Craven officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery with military honors.

Pallbearers will be Ben Smith, Jason Smith, Zac Smith, Justin Smith, Aaron Deal, Robby Thomas, Dale Watson, and Payton Deal.

The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 prior to the service.
